2018 McDonald's D24 Durian McFlurry in Hong Kong

Hong Kong McDonald's launched the durian McFlurry on July 5th which is available in Hong Kong and Macao.
It will only be available for two weeks but surprisingly it was sold out within two days of launch!

You either hate or love Durian like Marmite!
The D24 Durian McFlurry was launched in Malaysia last year so it is not new but new to Hong Kong and Singapore.

I tried it on the first day.

On the menu, there are two options, the standard one for HKD25 and the Deluxe one with extra durian for HKD40.

I ordered the HKD40 where I was given a separate tub of Durian.

To be honest, the durian was not fresh durian but durian puree with tiny shreds of durian in it.
Sadly, the durian puree was sweetened so the extra dose of durian puree didn't give me pleasure but extra goddamn sweetness!

If I knew the durian was sweetened, the standard Durian McFlurry would have been good enough and it is really weird why they had to sweeten it as Durian is naturally sweet anyway.

[Cafe 1980s] Pineapple bun and with durian??

Decided to try the pineapple bun filled with durian as it was recommended to me by the staff.

To be honest, I don't like pineapple buns because of the weird buttery crumble on top.
The pineapple bun here is sliced and stuffed with a scoop of D24 durian icecream and creamy durian filling.
It was simply delicious because the creamy durian puree tasted delicious with the bottom half of the soft bun.
The icecream is good too but it gets in the way so I had it separately.

Finally tried Musang King durian

I have always wanted to try this place but Yuen Long is too far.

Before I went in the shop, I was given a flyer which I did not really take a look at.

The lady who gave me the leaflet strongly recommended the durian softserve.

There were other items I wanted to try such as the durian milkshake which was not available yet.

The only items that were available were the pancakes $42, crepes $58 and soft serve (dine in $68, takeaway $38).

The menu was rather weird, the crepes were called pancakes and the pancakes that looked like French crepes were called pancakes.

The guy at the till recommended the soft serve to dine in or the pancake (French crepe).

As I have not tried Musang Durian on its own I opted for the pancake because it was just pancake with durian meat. The crepe had Musang durian meat as well but it had cream too.

Anyway, after I finished the dessert my bored friend who does not eat durian noticed on the flyer that you get a free soft serve icecream with any purchase.

Initially I couldn't be bothered to redeem it but my bored friend did the deed.

It seem's that they print these flyers to attract people but if you were already intending to dine there they won't bother to tell you about the offer because they just want you to order the most expensive item on the menu ie the softserve!!

Just for fun a 2.5kg durian would cost £37.99 (HKD46X) in the UK.

When I got the pancake, the first thing I did was try the durian on its own and the taste is evidently stronger and richer which a heavy savoury taste.
I am glad to have finally tried Musang durian because it would be difficult to have a whole one to yourself.

Durian icecream blind tasting : Musang King

Attended a blind testing for Durian icecream.

There were eight different brands that we tried and we wrote down our comments on the sheet as shown.

After all eight were tested, our sheets were collected and the results were revealed.

For this particular icecream, my comments were:
Natural durian taste with a medium aftertaste.
The texture was smooth but slightly icy.
The colour of this icecream was creamy light yellow.

I will definitely go and try their desserts because they have just opened a branch at Causeway bay so you don't have to travel all the way to Yuen Long!!
Hurrah!

Durian gelato from Honeymoon dessert

Not everyone likes Durian so it was hard to get people to try it with me.

At Honeymoon Dessert, they have got this new Durian Gelato!!!!

It costs $38 per tub.

50% off if you dine there and order Durian desserts.

As well as durian gelato, they have this new green tea jelly dessert which I want to try too.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Durian gelato:

The durian smell is not that strong because icecreams don't really give off smells.

Anyway, I was quite impressed because it actually had pieces of durian flesh in it and the taste was natrual, however it can be a bit sweet.

The texture of the gelato was a little icy and could have been smoother.

Durian glutinous rice dumplings

Went past this place and noticed these glutinous rice dumplings thinking it was the usual mango filling inside, but they had DURIAN!!!!

I havent seen Durian in them before so got some to try.
They cost $8 each which is slightly pricey.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Durian glutinous rice dumpling:

It was lovely and cold because they got it from the fridge.
The taste of this was so delicious because the dumpling skin was soft and gooey and it was filled with fresh sweet durian meat!

Traditional desserts don't work for me

After trying the strawberry series, came back to try the Durian pancake and this other grass jelly dessert with durian in vanilla sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Durian pancake:

There was a pile of these in the fridge which must mean they were made a while ago.
The cream tasted artificial and the durian meat was not that fresh.

I prefer the pancakes at Chung's because the pancakes here are thick and not so soft.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
grass jelly dessert with durian in vanilla sauce:

The grass jelly dessert fared better because I loved the vanilla sauce with ice crystals that cool you down.
The durian meat was quite heavy but it was the most expensive element in this dessert.

Lovely icy desserts on a 7°C day

I love having cold desserts on a cold day because Hong Kong is not cold enough.

This time I chose the melon tofu dessert because it has icy melon slush and I had the durian pancake as well so that I could compare it to the one at Honeymoon dessert.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Durian pancake:

The size is smaller than the one at Honeymoon dessert and the colour of the pancake was a light lime which is not as artificial as Honeymoon's green.

But according to their menu, it seems that the colour of the pancake should be the same colour as the cover of their menu.
The durian pancake here wins because it has more fresh Durian meat in it and the cream is silkier and lighter with the sweetness just right.
I prefer the pancake here too because it is thinner than the Honeymoon dessert one.

As for the price, I can't remember which one was more expensive.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Melon tofu dessert:

As it was cold, the slushy melon was not slushy but icy which was lovely and the pieces of melon froze so the melon had a lovely icy texture as well.
Beneath it was silky tofu which was complemented by the icy sweet melon and icy melon slush.
The slush was really nice because it was blended with real melon.
After finishing the dessert I finally felt cooler!
(In the summer, the melon slush is not icy and is just like a smoothie.)

After looking at the menu again, it seems that I have made the wrong choice because the one with grass jelly seems to be cheaper and has sago in it as well as the picture shows.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
The cashier obviously does not like 5 cents because there were plenty of $1 coins in the till.
But anyway their desserts are good so I will be back again and spend it here.

RAsuperMEN rips open to super ramen

rasupermen (銅鑼灣)

When you go to rasupermen, you are greeted by a big set of curtains with rasuperman's chest which rip open to the entrance of the restaurant.

Thanks to KC, I was invited to this tasting to try their new RAMEN burger.

Since my last visit, there are so many more new items on the menu and their ramen has been modified and tastes better than the previous tastings according to other foodies (arent I lucky to try it at its best)!

Heres what we tried.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Codomo fruit soda:

There were five pretty bottled sodas each covered in a fruit skin design.
The five flavours were: white peach, watermelon, melon, durian and mango.
To be honest, melon should be the one that tastes the best but you don't often find Durian soda so I just had to try it.

Durian soda:The soda was really nice and just like normal soda except that it was durian flavoured.
It had an interesting savoury sweet taste that is not as pungent as the fruit.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Ramen burger:

This is similar to the rice burger but ramen is used to make the burger base.
It is slightly easier to eat than a rice burger because the noodle base is crispy and holds together well.
However it is easier to eat it with knives and forks.
Overall I really liked the ramen burger because I loved the BBQ sauce and the beef patty was really good because it was lean and juicy.
For improvements I would like to see a thinner patty and thinner noodle burger or another fun idea would be mini ramen burgers as snacks but it would be hard to make.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sakura prawn shio ramen:

The ramen comes with deep fried julienne vegetables mixed with prawn.
The broth was amazing and I loved the abundance of crispy sakura shrimps and finely chopped chives on top.
The ramen itself was really nice, it was similar to the texture of tagliatelle.
I am so glad that the noodles have been modified and tastes better than my initial visit.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tonkotsu soymilk ramen:

The broth for this was surprisingly different to other soymilk broths, it was much stronger and there was a really concentrated soymilk taste in it.
I loved the balance of shredded vegetables and the pork which was lovely and soft.
I do not usually eat the pork in the ramen but this one tasted great I finished all of it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pork belly tsukemen:In other ramen joints I don't normally order Tsukemen (noodles dipped in thick broth) because I was not fond of the thick noodles.
But here, the thick broth and noodles were really nice and there were three different noodles.

There are three colours Black for Charcoal, orange for red ginger and green for green tea.
There is only a slight taste difference in the noodles because they wanted to make the noodles more attractive.
The thickness was just right and I loved the way the broth adhered to it, and in the broth there was pork and leek in it too.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Zuwai crab and Hokkaido sweet corn ramen:
Lastly, we had the sweetcorn ramen.
I thought this was going to be the lightest tasting broth, but it tasted strong as well which was good and I could taste fish in it too.
The sweetcorn was impressive because it was removed from the cob but the loose sweetcorn pieces still held together.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Shio icecream (salt):

The shio icecream was interesting because it was greyish pale blue in colour and the taste was amazing because it actually had salt crystals in it which give a burst of saltiness here and there that was not too salty but enhanced the icecream. The shio icecream tastes even better than salted caramel flavours because it is salty in a different way.
For the icecreams, the texture was just right. The spoon glided effortlessly in the icecream.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Rice icecream:

As well as the Shio icecream above, this one was also delicious because it had bits of rice in it giving a nice mouthful.
I loved the rice puffs on top which tasted similar to Sugar puffs (a British rice cereal )
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

I am dirty, please take me home to be recycled

I was attracted to the new Durian dessert with Glutinous rice because of the Jar.
Previously tried it before because Mjqueen7e got me the Frozen one from some local supermarket.

According to their Facebook and product shots, the glutinous rice is on the bottom layer with fresh durian meat on top.

There is a label on the jar in Chinese saying " Please take me home to be reused"

The glutinous rice was in a plastic tub which was put inside the glass jar.

The fresh durian was placed on top of the glutinous rice and strangely garnished with parsley which was so funny in a dessert.

It seems that you can take the inner plastic tub out which contains the dessert, and the bottom half of the jar is clean.

As I was going to reuse it, I decided to wipe the jar with tissue incase there were traces of dessert on it and I was SHOCKED to see the TISSUE WAS BLACK!!
How can they put food in DIRTY containers.
Food grade containers are a standard and clean containers for food are a must!
Even if you didn't know the definition of FOOD GRADE, I think it is the basics to serve consumables using a clean container.
Would'nt this make an interesting article for Appledaily after having just reported Hoi Tin Tong's contaminated turtoise desserts.
It makes me wonder if people in Hong Kong know the definition of Food grade containers or even food hygiene.

I suppose I was also lucky because according to their Facebook, the glutinous rice and durian is actually in the jar and touching the insides of the jar directly.

The only fortunate thing was that the glutinous rice did not touch that black stuff.
Their recycling label should read:
I am dirty, please take me home to be recycled
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Durian and glutinous rice:
The durian was quite mushy and sweet and the glutinous rice was dehydrated and hard that I wonder how long it had been in the fridge.
