Heavenly Lebanese fare at [Mama Malouf]

There are not many Lebanese restaurants around in Hong Kong.
Mama Malouf serves Middle Eastern food with playful modern twists.

After seeing pictures on social media, I knew the food was going to be good because it was similar to the Leb food in London and they also do hummus bowls while the pickles looked promising.

Started with the Mezze which are a must
+++++
MAMAS MEZZE - HUMUS, BABA, TARAMASALATA, PICKLES - 138

All my favourite dips with hot and soft flatbread.
The pickles were really refreshing and strong with a good salty and sour kick.

+++++
CHICKEN LIVERS WITH FETA MAYO & PICKLED CHILI - 78

This was chunky liver pieces on creamy feta mayo.

+++++
SMASHED EGGPLANT WITH LEBANESE SALSA & ZATAR MANOUSH - 98

I love anything with Zatar, the more the better and the flatbread was coated with a delicious layer that was aromatic.
The smashed eggplant accompanied it nicely.
+++++
SHISH TAWOUK WITH PEPPERS AND ONION, ALMOND RICE & TOUM - 178

This is another must order as the pieces of chicken were chunky and tender on a bed of fluffy rice.
Adding the dip to the rice and chicken makes it taste even better.
+++++
BAKED CARROTS WITH FETA MAYO & POMEGRANATE - 58

The carrots were too pretty to eat, almost as if they were freshly plucked from the soil. Each one was roasted perfectly with a soft centre topped with delicious creamy mayo and ruby pomegranate jewels.
+++++
Finished with the COFFEE & CARDAMOM ICE CREAM SANDWICH - 68.

Although it was coffee, It reminded me of Indian masala chai.
The icecream and filo pasty tasted really good together and the delicate filo layers hung the ice cream nicely.
+++++
For drinks, had the harissa which tasted like bloody mary.
For improvements, it would be good if you could choose the level of spiciness.

+++++
Overall, I loved everything so I will gladly come back if I am in the area.

[Ice Monkey] Softserve and caviar anyone?

I was in K-Town to try Jack’s fried chicken but unfortunately it has closed down so I went to no soup curry instead.
After the curry I went here for dessert.

There were icecreams, smoothies and this weird softserve and caviar so I went for the weird.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
softserve and caviar:

The softserve and caviar tasted surprisingly good together because the softserve was not too creamy or too sweet otherwise this would have made the caviar taste weird.
The caviar that was served was quite good quality because they were crisp with bursts of saltiness which is similar to softserves with fancy salt.
The only improvement would be the presentation, it looks a bit sloppy with prized caviar just about to drop from the edge.

Shoreditch in Hong Kong

I was attracted by the name Shoreditch because Shoreditch is a town in East London.

At Shoreditch, they serve British fare.

I already had dinner before so I went for a soup and dessert but next time I am coming back for FISH AND CHIPS.

For desserts I was going to order two but the treacle tart was sold out.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Cullen Skink:

Cullen Skink is a Scottish soup made of smoked haddock, potatoes and onions.
It was a nice soup packed with flavour and a wonderful creamy texture but the consistency could have been thicker.
I loved the generous pieces of smoked haddock in the soup but they were quite salty which were perfect with the bread.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Rice Pudding $88:

This was rice pudding with rhubarb at the bottom covered with honeycomb vanilla pieces.

It was a nice matching of sweet honeycomb pieces on top and sour rhubarb in harmony with the creamy rice pudding.

The honeycomb was slightly bitter because of there was too much bicarbonate of soda but it was nice and chewy.

Better service needed at Kinsale

Before the MTR was available, I attempted to dine here in Aug 2014 but when I got to the entrance no one served me and the waitresses for busy ignoring me so I left.
The lunch and brunch hours are short and I was told that the brunch had finished even though it was still brunch hours.

Anyway, this place is really noisy so don't expect a quiet lunch or brunch.
Ordered bubble and squeak which seems to be the only place in HK that serves it after Harringtons closed.
Unfortunately, the bubble and squeak was salty as hell.

Waffles with a purple centre at Summer Ice

Came here for the purple waffles.
They were pretty and would make a great post on instagram to get likes.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Purple waffles:

I am not quite sure what the hype is but I found them too hard and dry but this is the way the locals like their waffles. HARD!

The waffles were definitely sweet but you couldn't really taste the purple potatoes.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
I will be back for the sweet potato latte so that I can compare it to the one at Gaba concept.

Tulsi stretches to West Hong Kong

Ever since I dined at the North Point's award winning Tulsi, I have fallen in love with their curries because they are just like the ones in the UK.
There is a branch in Quarry Bay which is good but the location is troublesome and there are always crowds because there are no Indian restaurants around.
After checking out HKU MTR station I stumbled upon this branch of Tulsi which is quite different to the other two because they serve Thai food and pasta dishes.

Anyway, dined there because they had curries.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chocolate lassi:

This was a special request because chocolate milkshake was too heavy so I asked them if they could make a chocolate lassi and as expected it tasted how I like it because I loved the yoghurt taste with a hint of cocoa.
For people who like this, you can buy chocolate yoghurts but not in Hong Kong.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Aloo Gobi:

This was fantastic as expected because it had an appetizing tomato base with curry spices with juicy cauliflower florets and silky potatoes.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Beef curry:

A mildly spiced curry with a great curry sauce to go with the rice.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mushroom rice:

The mushroom rice was similar to the other fried rices that they serve.
Each grain of rice was tasty and the portion was surprisingly big!!

Sunday's Grocery saved the day

Last year when K-Town MTR station had not been opened, I made an effort to go to Kinsale, however they were not taking any reservations.
The brunch at Kinsale is served until 2:30.
I got there at 1:30 but the staff in the restaurant wouldn't bother attending to the customers at the door.
By the time I finally got attended to, I was told that brunch had finished.
Feeling very pissed I went to Sunday's which has never failed me before.

I got the Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich.

As you can see it was neat and flawless, it was sliced cleanly in the middle and looked perfect for a food shot!

The taste was amazing too, the chicken coating was crisp and light with no rancid oil taste.
It was simply delicious with the fresh salad, creamy mayonnaise and chicken in one bite!
