Laksa at Uncle Lim's

My first bowl of Laksa was at Katong Laksa, I have been addicted ever since even though it can be too spicy at some times to be tolerated.
If Laksa is on the menu, it has to be ordered.
Since then I have been compiling a singamalay series on my blog and openrice but after a few, you get to know what a good one is from the presentation and taste.
I got a fair share of Singaporean and Malaysian Laksa in Hong Kong even though some places may have closed for good and new ones have popped up but in the UK I have not tried many.
Before I go, I usually check their menu and photos to see if its the real deal.
The laksa at Uncle Lim's looked the part with thin rice vermicelli, tofu puffs in a strong looking broth.
On the menu they also had mee siam and prawn mee which show they serve truly Singmalay dishes.

Visited Uncle Lim's and ordered the Laksa.
When it came, it looked consistent just like the photos with that strong looking broth and lots of tofu puffs.
The rice vermicelli was not too spicy followed by an aromatic broth, taking a sip of the broth I realized it was quite spicy.
Overall, it was really good and tasted how it should be so next time I will be trying another noodle for comparison.

On a side note, as I was paying through card, I had to use the order from table thing but I didn't have the internet so it was helpful that they helped me through with ordering and then I entered my details.
The only scary thing is the card payment so hopefully their phone didn't get hacked or I'm screwed.
Anyway time will tell, so next time I will have some cash ready to pay.

Pung pung Laksa noodles set

Restaurant: 碰麵撈麵專門店 (Mong Kok)

Ordered the set because it had Laksa vermicelli for $48.

The set was interesting because it came with herbs and butter toast, seaweed, Roselle tea drink and a tofu pudding (subject to availability).

As well as that I tried the intestines with soy wasabi sauce.

It was tea time so there were not many people.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Roselle tea:

The sweetness was just right and it basically tastes like ribena with a rosy taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Butter toast and seaweed:

Initially I assumed it was garlic bread but it was herbs and butter which was quite nice.
It was interesting it came with seaweed too! The seaweed tasted natural with a hint of sesame oil but the green colour was artificial because it came off on the toast.
Weird combination to pair seaweed and toast!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Laksa vermicelli:
The laksa broth tasted more like prawn broth with added lemongrass to it.
It was not spicy which was good because I did not feel like anything spicy that day.
If you have tried the seafood broth at this place, the broth tastes like that enhanced with lemongrass.
On top of the vermicelli, there was a huge piece of pork chop with shimeji and enoki mushrooms.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Intestines with soy wasabi sauce:

The colour of these intestines were quite dark! Usually they are bright orange or natural.
I tried them without the sauce and it was already flavoured and quite nice.
The texture of them were soft and springy.
After dipping them in wasabi sauce they tasted even better.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tofu pudding:

The taste of the pudding was really nice and not too sweet.
The soybean taste was strong and it seems to be made with soymilk and gelatin.

Curry and Laksa from Macau in Shaukeiwan

Restaurant: 澳門咖喱叻沙 (Shau Kei Wan)

This shop used to be Winton world and now it has transformed into a joint serving curries, laksas, and Taiwanese roti.

There were quite a few items I wanted to try: Tom Yum noodles and Laksa noodles but in the end I tried the Taiwanese roti with beef curry.

The joint is quite small and seats about six people.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Beef Curry:

The beef curry was thick and the colour was greenish brown.
It was extremely spicy mixed with lots of spices.
It was quite nice but it was slightly too salty.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Taiwanese roti:

The Taiwanese roti was really nice because it was not too oily and it was crispy and flakey just perfect for dipping it into the salty curry.

Madam Chow LAH for SingMalay food

周太 (灣仔)

Saw this new restaurant listed on OpenRice and it was classified as Singaporean so I decided to check it out but I never got round to it until recently because it takes an effort to walk over there.

I finally went because I had tasting that day nearby.

When I saw it listed, it reminded me of Madam Lim's Laksa in Shau Kei Wan because of the Madam in the name and they both serve fried chicken wings in prawn paste.

However 林太叻沙xo魚湯米綫專門店 Madam Lim's Laksa has closed down.

This restaurant stands out because of the sheer black and chequered tiles, and the logo is interesting too because they have put the Chinese characters in the letter O of the CHOW.

Inside the restaurant, it was nice and simple with black tables and chairs, the menu is written on the chalkboards.

They have afternoon tea sets, lunch sets and all day sets.

I ordered the noodles, baguettes and chicken wings.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Malacca baguette with sardines:

I was not sure what this was going to be like but it looked interesting so I got it.
When it was served it was two pieces of toast with sardines, lettuce, and thousand island dressing.

The baguette was sliced horizontally into slices which made thin like a toast.
The sardine tasted different because it did not taste like the canned ones with tomatoes.
The fish was really silky, soft and boneless and it had been slightly pan fried with a crispy texture and the salad sauce and lettuce complimented it nicely making it an ideal afternoon snack.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Deep fried chicken wings marinated in prawn paste:

The prawn paste smell and taste was not as strong as I was expecting, but the overall taste was really nice.
The coating of the wings was really crisp and there was a hint of sweetness as well.
There was a side of julienne cucumbers to cool your tongue after eating the fried chicken wings.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Instant noodles in satay sauce with squid:

The satay sauce was slightly too salty but overall it was delicious with the noodles, however I felt that the soy sauce in the noodles were not necessary because the satay sauce was strong enough.
The squid was nice and soft and tasted nice with the satay sauce which had a nice strong peanut taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Ginger milk tea:

This was surprisingly nice because the ginger was not strong, but I did not like it because it tastes similar to Chinese milk tea which is not my cup of tea.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Malaysian tea:

Again not my cup of tea because it is similar to Chinese milk tea.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
There is nothing wrong with the tea, but I have never liked the Asian milk tea.
