Savoury soybean soup

This restaurant is quite good for quick Shanghainese snacks such as tofu, soymilk, rice with spare ribs etc.
However it is easily forgotten because it is located on a back street of some unpopular mall and the restaurant itself is quite grubby.

Anyway here was what I had:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Soymilk:

Lightly sweetened soymilk with a mild soybean taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Savoury soymilk:

This was item that I came for and it did not let me down.
There were generous amounts of tiny dried shrimps, preserved vegetables (jaa-choi), spring onions and fried dough sticks in the soymilk.
It reminded me of Western soup because it was thick and wholesome yet tasty because of all the tasty elements especially the preserved vegetables and fried dough sticks.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried tofu:

The tofu blocks were fried just right with a golden colour.
Inside it was soft and silky which tasted great with the chili bean sauce condiment on the table.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sweet soymilk with dumplings:

I was disappointed with the dumplings because they used to taste really good.
The dumplings were too soft this time with holes and the fillings came out.

Fancy soy mlk and fried doughstick at KFC!!!

Kentucky Fried Chicken (Wan Chai)
KFC, a specialist in Fried chicken now serves American fried dough sticks with soy milk for breakfast, it looks 100% Chinese and does not look American at all!

Anyway, I was curious, so decided to try it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried dough sticks:
Before I tried it, I was impressed because it was hot and freshly fried, it was even hygienically wrapped too which beats any dough stick at Hong Kong's congee shop unless you go there just when they freshly fry dough sticks.
It is guaranteed to be cleaner too.

The great thing is they will fry them when ordered because people will not go here for these doughsticks so it is going to be fresh.
When the I unwrapped it, the dough stick was quite small.

It was really cute because you could still separate it into two single sticks just like the traditional ones.

Anyway, the taste was delicious, it was chewy inside and crispy outside and you could taste some other spices which you can't taste in Congee shops.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Soy sauce:

It just tasted like the usual soy milk, but it was not too sweet which was good.

Strawberries and cream day dream frappuccino

Soy Strawberries and cream frappuccino

Strawberries and cream are always good together especially during the Wimbledon season.
The drink was lovely and creamy and the strawberry syrup that they used was quite nice and did not taste fake.

Before drinking it I would advise to stir the drink with the straw so that when you drink it the taste of strawberry and cream will be consistent.
Although it is made with soy milk i could not taste it, but it definately tastes better than the strawberry soy cheesecake served at Starbucks before.

Shanghai dumplings @ 上海真美豆漿大王

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Soymilk with dumplings:
Same as before, I love this dessert however they are not consistent, sometimes the dumplings are too soft and sometimes they are just right.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried luncheon meat, egg and rice:
This was simple but nice, alot of places in Hong Kong just serve luncheon meat, egg with rice, but here you get preserved vegetables with it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Shanghai dumplings:
The skin was rather thick but it was filled with meat juice inside after it was steamed.
The vinegar looked authentic with the sliced ginger in it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Beef in five spices with rice:
The beef was quite nice and not too salty.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Glutinous rice with pork floss and pickled veg filling:
NO PHOTO, but I found the rice too dry and the filling too sweet.

McCafe's asiaroma of tea series - Soy Green Tea

The new asiaroma teas were quite attractive especially the poster.
It is quite good that there are new teas on the menu for non coffee drinkers.

The two new drinks in this series are Himalayan Tea and Soy Green tea which is available hot or cold.
The Himalayan tea is Himalayan tea with fresh milk topped with whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon and the Soy green tea is sweet green tea with soy milk with whipped cream and green tea powder on top.

After trying the Himalayan tea which was really nice I got the Soy Green tea.

Soy Green tea - Cold
After taking the first sip, I was surprised the taste of the soy milk was quite strong but the green tea taste but still prominent.
The taste of the soymilk leaves a savoury aftertaste when you swallow it.
The drink reminded me of the Japanese roasted rice teas.
Overall I really liked this drink because the savoury taste of the soymilk balances out the grassyness and bitterness of the green tea taste.
The sweetness was just right and it is recommended to finish the drink as soon as possible before the ice melts and dilutes the drink.
