Burger Republic resurrected

Burger Republic used to be on Gough Street in Sheung Wan but sadly they closed in 2009!
http://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/%E4%B8%8A%E7%92%B0-burger-republic/1889713?tc=sr2rvw&con=rvw

After six years they are back!
The last surviving branch of New York Fries have become extinct and Burger Republic resurrected.

It's sad news because I love NYF but then Burger Republic is also good.
The burger selection is not quite the same as before because they don't have the cranberry and cheese burger so I got the chicken guacamole burger instead.

chicken guacamole burger:

It was a good juicy piece of chicken thigh smothered in guacamole and sour cream with some cajun spices.

Savoury soybean soup

This restaurant is quite good for quick Shanghainese snacks such as tofu, soymilk, rice with spare ribs etc.
However it is easily forgotten because it is located on a back street of some unpopular mall and the restaurant itself is quite grubby.

Anyway here was what I had:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Soymilk:

Lightly sweetened soymilk with a mild soybean taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Savoury soymilk:

This was item that I came for and it did not let me down.
There were generous amounts of tiny dried shrimps, preserved vegetables (jaa-choi), spring onions and fried dough sticks in the soymilk.
It reminded me of Western soup because it was thick and wholesome yet tasty because of all the tasty elements especially the preserved vegetables and fried dough sticks.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried tofu:

The tofu blocks were fried just right with a golden colour.
Inside it was soft and silky which tasted great with the chili bean sauce condiment on the table.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sweet soymilk with dumplings:

I was disappointed with the dumplings because they used to taste really good.
The dumplings were too soft this time with holes and the fillings came out.

Great food trashed by the box

On my previous visit, the food was disgusting but decided to come back for the rice in lotus leaf.

I was expecting the rice to be wrapped in lotus leaves served in a steamer as shown but it when it came it was placed in an old wooden box.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Lovely hygienic wooden box:

I wonder how much bacteria was on the box!!

From the colour it seems that the box is really old.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Steamed rice in lotus leaf with minced pork and preserved vegetables:
Anyway, I just spooned the rice in the middle.

Each grain of rice was coated evenly in sauce and it was slightly oily.

There were lots of dried squid in it which made it delicious.
However the rice could have tasted better because the box had this unpleasant odour.

Good concept but too oily at Daikuya

Kiev filled with miso and radish:

Daikuya (Tseung Kwan O)
I am not really a fan of pork or deep fried cutlets, but tried this place because of the Japanese style pork kievs.

As well as these pork kievs, they had other snacks too such as fried cutlet egg, fried cheese etc, but none of them were available when I tried to order them.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
At the counter, they had samples of the different kievs:

Kiev filled with creamy mushrooms:
Kiev filled with Spinach:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Decided to get the Kiev with miso and radish because the spinach and mushroom ones looked a bit creamy.

The set comes with soba, rice or ochazuke, julienne cabbage and a drink.

The soba was a bit too soft for my liking.

The julienne vegetables were really nice because of the sesame sauce.

The green tea was the best out of the set because it was not too sweet and the green tea taste was strong.

The star of the meal! The Kiev!
It was a bit too oily!

I was a bit disappointed the filling was same colour as the coating. The miso was not even dark nor was there any miso paste or beans in it because I could only taste some slight grated radish.
The filling was bit weak and tasteless.
More annoyingly, the pork was very fatty!

URBAN croissants at the urban side of town

URBAN Bake n Take (Tseung Kwan O)

Urban bakery's first branch was at the Hysan place.
After opening their second Branch at langham place, this is their third branch away from the city.

I did not try the croissants at Hysan place because when I went, there was a horrible buttery smell in the air.

The range was the same with almond croissants, cheese croissants, caramel croissants and the deluxe croissants.

Decided to try it because their was no queue and there was a food court nearby to eat it.
Tried the Langoustine with curry emulsion croissant, cheese croissant and caramel croissant.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Langoustine with curry emulsion croissant:

After ordering it, the Lingoustine (crayfish) was measured by weight and put in a bowl for mixing.

It was helpful of them to slice it in half for me, but the taste was slightly disappointing because the sauce had a weird taste which ruined it for me.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Cheese croissant:

Lacked cheese taste and it was slightly sweet too.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Caramel croissant:

Too buttery and greasy.
Although it was flakey, it was heavily greased.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
To conclude La salon croissantere is much better because the butter is not as heavy and does not leave me with indigestion.
Eating just one croissant from this place leaves me stuffed for at least six hours.

Free herbal tea to prevent colds and flu

Kung Wo Tong (Tseung Kwan O)

Earlier I walked past the Wan Chai branch and they were giving out free herbal teas to prevent colds and flus.
(picture shows Wan Chai branch with herbal teas ready for people to take).

Anyway, I took one and drank it as a normal drink, it was pleasant with a slight bitterness.

Later I was in different area so I went to the nearest branch to see if they were doing it too and they were.
However this branch was not promoting it and you had to ask to get it.
As for the taste, the drink at this branch was not as strong as the Wan Chai branch.

But anyway, Thanks to the generosity of Kung Wo Tong for giving people free herbal teas.

You can get yours at any branch from 1-2pm and 7-8pm.

Scallop porcini ravioli at Hang Hau Village

After my favourite La Piazzetta closed down in Wan Chai I ventured to the outskirts of TKO to La Piazza to try their Ravioli. It is renowned for economical pastas as well as fine pastas.

It used to be a good location especially when ATV's Clear water bay studio used to be located there but the crew and actors usually go for Chinese food and there is a really good canteen there (which should be listed on openrice) that does delicious chicken steak with garlic and spring onions and crispy pork patty with salted fish.
It was mild that day so I sat outside. I was surprised there was not many mosquitoes about which was good.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Scallop and porcini mushroom ravioli
Ordered this first and it was served so fast.
I was expecting it to take longer and it didnt even take five minutes but it turns out they were not hot enough.
The sauce was creamy but it wasnt too heavy.
Inside the ravioli were whole pieces of scallops and pieces of porcini mushroom.
If there was truffle oil or fresh truffle used in the sauce it would have been perfect.
However the scallops in the ravioli were rather chewy and I could not distinguish whether the scallops were raw or overdone, but from the pictures it seems raw because if they were cooked it should be white and not so translucent. Overall the pasta tasted nice and the porcini mushrooms were nice and strong.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Squid ink pasta with asparagus and prawn
I mentioned that the ravioli was not hot enough so the chef ensured the squid ink pasta was piping hot.
The pasta was stir-fried with garlic and some fine celery stalks in it. The pasta was extremely al-dente and slightly too oily with some odour from the pan but since I went late the pan had probably cooked many more pastas before so it accumulated some odours from the other dishes. The asparagus was big and it was surprising that they were not woody.
The only thing that let it down was some sand in the pasta and I wasnt sure if it came from the prawns or the asparagus.
On the menu this pasta is called shrimp and asparagus tonnarelin but when I googled tonnarelin I was referred to Tonnarelli. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Tonnarelli is a thicker, more squared, version of spaghetti. I think the pasta was made in house because it had a different texture to the normal pasta and it was not so mushy.
