[Review] Le Hanoi - London Leicester Square

To be honest, I am not a fan of Vietnamese food because Hongkongized Vietnamese food has put me off it especially the cloyingly sweet broths which are a recipe for disaster but loved by the locals there.

Anyway, went to Le Hanoi in London which is located in Chinatown.
Before commenting on food, the service was really friendly and attentive which explains why people like to dine there.

I am not sure if this is a new restaurant but the decor by the staircase looks like it was left from the previous restaurant.

Moving on to the food, tried the rare beef pho and lemongrass tea.
Although the pho was too soft, it was miles better than the weird broths in Hong Kong and the hanger steak slices were so damn good.

The lemongrass tea is made with fresh lemongrass which is a bonus!

Delish Roast beef bahn mi at [越之味 Tasty Vietnam HK]

Randomly went here because of the roast beef banhmi.

I didn't have any expectations because the location being in polam so I was expecting everything to be localized.
They did have some interesting items on the menu like the rolls with liver paste.

Dined in for the roast beef bahnmi and it was pretty good there wasn't a 10% service charge. But then I suppose, it is getting competitive with so many new eateries nearby such as the Taiwanese noodle joint, Marugai udon, laksa joint and this Chinese joint.

When it arrived, it looked promising.
The baguette was not burnt with a lovely golden crispy crust while the middle was soft.

The roast beef was convincing, it was pink and you could see the fibres without any connecting tissues.

I was totally satisfied after taking a bite because everything was good from the baguette to the beef.
Most importantly the pickles were properly pickled and not sweet.

There was a dash of mustard which went well with the beef.
The texture of the beef was really tender that I wouldn't describe it as roast beef but a cross between pastrami without the smokiness and slow cooked beef.

I think the beef tastes better in the banhmi than the pho as the heat will end up changing the texture of the beef.
Will definitely be back and hopefully the beef will be just as good on the next visit

The only thing they could improve is having tissues on the table.

Chua Lam's Pho at 蔡瀾 pho

Chua Lam is a famous Singaporean columnist and food critic.
All that springs to my mind is pork lard with rice when I hear his name.

On the 5th July 2018, [Chua Lam's Pho] in Central will be serving hearty bowls of Vietnamese Pho noodles.

The Vietnamese pho is a secret recipe from Melbourne's Pho Dung, which is Chua Lam's favourite pho hence the reason he brought it to Hong Kong.

At [Chua Lam's Pho], it is probably the only pho restaurant in Hong Kong which has the machinery to make fresh Pho noodles.

I had the Special Beef Pho which was served with a side of beanshoots and herbs.

Before I tried anything, I tried the broth which was light with a natrual sweetness that was not lingering.
Then I tried the pho noodles which were amazing as they were really silky and soft yet held together when you picked them up with chopsticks.

The pho is slightly thinner compared to other pho I have tried but the texture was really good.
After adding the Basil and chili, everything came together nicely.
For big eaters like me, you can get refills at no extra cost so YES PLEASE!!!

For drinks, the Vietnamese Coffee (Cold) was really good as there was no strange aftertaste and the Vietnamese Colourful coconut ice is worth checking out too.
There is also the Vietnamese Drip Coffee which is layered with condensed milk at the bottom of the cup.

Definitely coming back for more pho!

[Vuong's French Sandwich] Vegetarian series

This is probably the 6th visit to Vuong because their Vietnamese baguettes are really tasty.Usually I go to the HK branch but they have moved all their operations here.
Luckily they still serve my favourite double cheese baguette.
As well as meat, they serve quite a lot of vegetarian options like Vegetarian Vietnamese Baguette and Vegetarian noodles.

On this visit, I had the new vegetable salad which comes with a choice of two dressings: Vietnamese or Japanese.

The Japanese sauce on the right is suitable for vegetarians because it does not contain garlic. It is made with olives and vinegar.
The Vietnamese sauce on the left contains fish sauce which was given for my noodles.

I tried the noodles without any sauce. I found it palatable so if you really wanted to be health conscious, it tastes ok without but of course better with sauces. Personally, I liked their new Japanese sauce because it wasn't sweet and the vinegar is appetizing.

The vegetable salad was huge and nutritious with pine nuts and seasonal veggies like lettuce, cucumber, onions, pickled carrots, coriander and tomatoes.

Finished off with my favourite vegetarian baguette which was packed with delicious flavours as usual from the chilis and pickles.

The cheese baguette is another must order item as well, but unfortunately I was full so I finished off with the salty sprite which has a prominent salty lemon taste to it.

I WILL BE BACK FOR THE CHEESE BAGUETTE!

[I'Annam Banh Mi et Pho] In search of a good Banh Mi

I don't know why but there has been a spate of Vietnamese joints opening, be it pho, banh mi and you name it!
For me, I love Banh Mi because I have to have something filling in my day like bread, potatoes or rice.
Anyway, went here for the Banh Mi because they have some slightly different options and the drinks are worth checking out.

There are three Banh Mis which makes it incredibly hard to choose so I had two, the beef and the House special.
The third is vegetarian which I plan to try next time.
++
[I'Annam House Banh Mi]
When it came, it was pretty crammed with fillings and the taste was surprisingly good.
It was heavily buttered and the bun was to my liking ie crisp on the outside and soft with a chew.
The fillings inside were roast pork, minced meat, pate, pickles, thin layer of egg, Chinese celery and coriander.
The star of the show was actually the pate and minced meat filling because the minced meat had a spicy kick to it and it was very flavourful which helped excel everything.

++
[Shredded Beef short rib Banh Mi]
The beef short rib was not as fancy but still tasty especially if you like Southern pulled pork, you will love this and its spicy dressing and crunch of the pickles.

++
[Viet rice Noodles with Grilled Prawns]
The noodles are really filling and yummy when mixed with their fish sauce that isn't too salty with a sweet and sour twist to it.

++
For drinks had the pineapple and ice which is crammed with fresh chunks of pineapple which makes it a great thirst quencher.

The hot drink is a great thing to drink on a cold day with a lovely sweet cinnamon flavouring.

[Fûhn] North American Pho satisfied here

In UK, I had no fuss or complaints with Vietnamese food but I found myself avoiding it in HK because the quality and taste is so different from UK.Recently heard of Co Thánh but it didn't really motivate me, but Fûhn did because they specialize in North American Pho which I have always wanted to try. The reason why Fuhn appealed to me is that CBCs, ABCs and celebs are always raving about how good the pho is over there just like how the texture and taste of ricerolls and noodles are more elastic and not sweet by default in UK. The noodles are served with herbs such as basil, perilla, fish mint, rice patty herb, which you can add according to your preference.

You also get a side of beanshoots, chili and lime for the noodles. The beanshoots are impressive because each one has had the top and tail removed so they look clean and fresh.

Moving onto the noodles, we got the XXL special beef pho where the bowl is so big that it takes up most of the table and the chopsticks and spoon seem tiny in proportion.
This is the size you would get in the US and Canada.

Tried the broth first which instantly got me hooked because of the strong herbs yet the broth was clear and light free from a layer of oil. It was savory and not sweet like Hong Kong phos and the noodles were just right flavoured with that broth. The noodles were topped with thinly sliced onions, raw beef, cooked beef, beef tendons, beef balls and beef tripe. I really liked the beef tripe because it was sliced to about 4mm so it hung more soup and it was less chewy to chew!!

We also had a platter and the prawn cakes were the best, they were tasty and fluffy with chunks of prawn in it which tastes like the prawn paste they use in UK's sesame prawn toasts served in Chinese joints.

Finished with avocado milkshake and Vietnamese ice blended coffee, both did not disappoint but there was tomato smoothie on the menu too so it will be on my drink list on the next visit, so will the chicken noodles.

On Fridays and Saturdays, it will never be too late for pho as they close at 4am!!!!!!

[HAWKR] Asian Pret X Mxnger

I didn't know what to expect here but I am always trying out SingMalay foods.
When I arrived, it just instantly looked like Pret x mangxr with soups, noodles, wraps, salads, desserts etc but Asian flavours like Rendang beef, Vietnamese salad etc.
If you eat there it feels so Hong Kong as there are so many red taxis going along that road.
I decided to get THE PENANG noodle because you get the fun of adding hot water to it like a pot noodle since there is a soup paste at the bottom which dissolves into a broth.
The hot Prawn Popiah wrap was filled with prawns, Taiwanese sausage, tofu, jicama, carrot, beansprouts and Hawkr's special Popiah sauce. I really liked it because it was crammed with so much stuff.
My friend had the Javanese Beef Rendang which was very aromatic as there was fresh turmeric and galangal taste to the beef.
For dessert finished with the pudding which contains sabja seeds at the bottom.
I liked it more than chia seeds because it does not irritate your throat and it was not too sweet.
