Avolatte hits Hong Kong

I am not Athletic but was drawn to Athletic Juice & Espresso Bar because of the avolatte.

Avolatte was first served in Melbourne which caused a stir worldwide.

Athletic Juice & Espresso Bar located on Star Street is one of the first places in Hong Kong to serve it.

As well as Avolatte they have healthy juices and smoothies fit for any sporty or athletic person.

On the sweet side, I had the hot chocolate and S7 Marathon Booster.
The hot chocolate was smooth with a strong cocoa taste that was not too sweet.

The Marathon Booster had all my favourites with Agave, Almond Milk, Avocado, Banana and Coconut Water blended with ice. All of the ingredients were in harmony and I loved the fact it was non dairy and vegan friendly whilst great on a hot day.

The avolatte was the star of the show, I loved the savoury aftertaste in the latte and then you get to eat the rest of the avocado when you are finished.

There are so many choices for juice and smoothies that I will have to come back again.

[Snow Sandwich] A cool corner in the midst of summer

I was walking to Yau Ma Tei in the sweltering heat when I noticed this bright blue shop so took a look.
It was out of place but stood out because of the bold design and fonts.

The name of the joint cooled me down slightly.

When I got nearer, I realized it was a sandwich joint and they had some homemade icecreams.
As it was stifling hot, I decided to get the avocado icecream since it was a rare flavour.

It was a bit icy but perfect on a hot day with a nice avocado flavour and real bits of avocado it it.

Juiced up and healthy

A while ago I spotted this juice joint because of the pomegranite juice so I made a mental note to come back.
I was having dinner nearby so I went there and they were just about to close but luckily I managed to get some juices.
It was really hard deciding which juice to get but since I couldn't decide I ended up getting three drinks because I am so busy that it will be a while when I will be in Central again.

Each menu was handwritten on a colourful sheet of paper with perfect colour sense of contrasting colours.

There were five main fruit bases:
Kiwi, blueberry, avocado, fig and pomegranate.

For the pomegranate juice they have three different types: Sweet, Sour and Snow white which come from Japan.
Here were the three drinks that I had:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Avocado yoghurt shake $30:
I had to order this because not many places serve avocado drinks except Indonesian joint but the version they do is really sweet and here you have more avocado drink choices such as yoghurt or fruit juice that are blended in it.
I love avocado so I went for the yoghurt shake so it was pure avocado and yoghurt and it tasted amazing because it was thick and creamy with a strong avocado taste that was not too sweet.
It is interesting that the yoghurt is garnished with two slices of lemon on top.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fig smoothie $38:
This was another drink I fell for because they use FRESH FIGS to blend this drink which means you get the natural fig taste.
I was impressed because it wasn't watery and there were a good amount of figs that you can truly taste the fig and the hint of grassyness of the fig skin.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sour pomegranate juice $43:
I was warned that the sour pomegranate would be very sour and indeed it was, the taste was acidic just like lemon but there was a sweet aftertaste.
They also have a blend of sweet and sour pomegranate and the snow white pomegranate juice which I shall try next time.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
I am definitely coming back again but it will be hard choosing a drink so I will probably just order them all!~!!!

Delicious Korean school food

School Food (Causeway Bay)
In most people's memory, school food was disgusting in the UK.
Luckily my school dinners were great and it was not even a private school, but I keep hearing stories about how miserable school dinners were.

This new Korean joint called School Food does not exactly serve school food but Korean food.

Just imagine how delightful it would be if we had this at school say once every two weeks.

As well as food, they had these really cute Athie drinks served in jugs which are great for sharing, there are four flavours.

We tried cotton strawberry and pineapple.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Cotton Strawberry athie:

The strawberry athie was really loveable with a light fizz and strawberry taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pineapple athie:
The colour of this was blue which you can see behind the strawberry athie jug, its pineapple flavour was strong but it could have been more sour.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Jjang-a-chi:
Jjang-a-chi is a root vegetable sourced from School Food’s vegetable farm and pickled.
It has been processed for more than seven times to give a unique flavor.
All their pickles are imported directly from School Food’s food factory in Korea.
The rice rolls that we tried contained the Jjang-a-chi and one of the rices had a non spicy version of it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Spam II:

These were rice rolls rolled with spam and Jjang-a-chi in the middle wrapped in seaweed and a thin layered of omelette with mozarella cheese melted on it.
The egg and spam reminded me of breakfast and I wouldn't mind having this for breakfast.
The spam was quite interesting because the texture is different from the usual spam and it is similar to soft Gammon ham.
The spam was boiled to get rid of the chemicals and oils and then soaked in marinade for flavour.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Squid ink mari:

As well as the Spam rolls, these were my favourite, it had chunks of squid in it.
They have used the body part of the squid so that is it soft and supple.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Prawn mari:

They were delicious when they arrived, because it was still some warm.
It was like eating warm soft glutinous rice with hot crunchy prawns in the middle wrapped in seaweed.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
hot pepper and anchovy mari:
These rice rolls were delicious because the tiny anchovies were crispy and the green chilis they use taste like the Mexican chilis.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Soy carbonara toppoki:

The carbonara was interesting because it was my first time trying Korean style carbonara. It had chewy Korean rice rolls and thick glass noodles.
The combination of carbonara sauce and sweet Korean soy sauce were quite appetizing but this dish is quite filling and slightly heavy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Street style topokki:
These were rice cakes cooked in Korean chili sauce. Personally I found them too spicy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
School Naengmyeon:

The School Naengmyeon is a bowl of cold soda noodles topped with beef broth slush.
At School food, they have a machine dedicated for making beef broth slush and they freeze their own beef broths.
When the beef broth slush melts in your mouth, it is extremely refreshing and eases the spicy kick you get from the noodles.
The noodles are slightly chewy and similar to thin strands of konjac noodles because of the texture.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pan-grilled butter bibimbap with pickles (soy):

The rice was served on a huge pan looking like a spoon, beneath the egg, there was butter and pickles.

After mixing, it is ready to eat.

There was a strong and fragrant butter taste, but I felt that the pickles could be sliced into shorter pieces so that it was more convenient to eat.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chicken gangjeong with green onion salad:

The taste of the fried chicken reminded of fried chicken wings in red beancurd sauce and the salad that came with it balanced out the oilyness of the chicken because it was spicy and it was thinly shredded spring onions which are normally used as garnishing but when eaten alone, it has quite a pungent taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Snow in Seoul:
There is a choice of Ginger and cinammon tea or Coffee jelly.

The one we had was Coffee Jelly, it was nice and cooling and tasted like latte.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Avocado milkshake:

I was surprised to see this on the menu because if it is on the menu, then it must mean avocado is a popular fruit in Korea.
The milkshake was really dreamy because it was not icy at all, and it was extremely thick so the other flavours are bound to taste good too.
It reminds me of American thick shakes and the texture is like thick whipped double cream because when you put your spoon in it, you can feel how light the texture is.

All the rolls here are freshly made to order.

Get your tastebuds ready for Avocado lush cake

Avocado is classified as a savory fruit and used mostly for salads and guacamole.

The only time I have had it sweet was the Indonesian Apokat drink which is avocado and syrup.

When I saw this cake, I initially thought it was Green tea or pistachio because of the green colour, however when I saw the label Avocado lush, I was quite surprised and I wonder how the locals will react to it.

I wasn't quite sure how this was going to taste because Avocado itself it quite heavy and rich alone.
For fun, I have tried eating avocado with plain sugar and it was quite nice.

Breadtalk is from Singapore, so their creations are likely to be influenced by countries near it such as Malaysia and Indonesia.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Avocado lush: When I tried it, the cake was not as heavy as I imagined it to be because there was no real avocado in it.
I believe they used avocado syrup or essense.
The taste of the avocado was not that strong and the cake whole tasted quite complicated because it was slightly bitter as well as sweet, and there were crispy pieces as well as chewy pieces in between the mousse.
I think I prefer the cake without those extra crispy pieces because they have made it too complicated.
Although the taste is not describable, I would not mind buying this again because it tasted quite nice.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Orange tea spa
This cake was quite refreshing and the orange taste was strong.
The raspberry and orange were really nice together and I liked the orange jelly with the chocolate cake.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Claypot chicken
Label description: 1 cup + 1 cup + 1 cup = three cup chicken.
This was a savoury bun and I was attracted to it because of the filling and it was black!
The bun was surrounded with crispy strands.
The filling was really nice with a strong basil taste.
It was definitely good eating something different.
