Hong Kong comfort food at Noodle and Dog

At first I didn't realize this joint was selling Hong Kong comfort food until I got nearer to it.

The menu was simple: chicken wings, hot dogs and dog noodles.

I went for the hot dog which was only $15 so it was pretty affordable.
It came in a nicely designed box.

I didn't know what to expect for that price but it was not a frankfurter.

When I tasted it, it was strikingly similar to hot dogs at Wing Lok Yuen and the sauce was almost the same.
If the sausage and bun were softer then it would definitely taste the same at WLY.
To be honest, I prefer ketchup but this is Hong Kong style.

A double hotdog is not enough

For local hotdogs there are two well known ones in Hong Kong, one is Danish bakery and the other one is Wing Lok Yuen.
They are now both in Central which was why I suddenly remembered this place.

Out of the two, I prefer Wing Lok Yuen because both the bun and Frank taste good.

Here they use the ZWAN brand which is part of the Zwanenberg Food Group from the Netherlands. Zwanenberg Food Group is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of processed meat products.

You can either get a takeout or dine downstairs.

I was greeted with a blinding almost fluorescent yellow menu contrasted with visually uncomfortable RED borders which have turned orange because it was printed on yellow paper~~!

Before I ordered, I was surprised they gave me a cup of water.

Ordered the double frank hotdog and the Salty lemon tea which I thought did not exist because when I was at Sing heung yuen, I ordered the salty lemon drink and mixed it with tea instead of 7up.
Next time I will order the Salty lemon with water which I did not see earlier.

double hotdog:

The franks were so tweeny weeny and short that there should be at least four per bun.
But anyway, it tastes good because the bun is normal and it was nicely heated with normal tasting Franks.
The only thing I did not like was the sugary thick sauce which I scraped away.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
salty lemon tea:

When it came I was surprised the salty lemon had already been mixed in the tea so you could see pieces of salty lemon floating in it.
The taste was not salty or sour enough and it was the most bitter drink I ever drank.
I could not make out whether the bitterness came from the tea or the salty lemon but it was astringent just like detergent!
At this restaurant, they have these really cute teaspoons.

second double hotdog without sauce:

Without the sauce, the hotdog was divine!!!
Next time I am going to bring my own ketchup and mustard!

Mini hot dog from It's a Tuck Shop

It's a Tuck Shop (Wan Chai)

I havent been here for a while because the guy is not there anymore and the food quality seems to have gone down.
On my previous visit, the burger bun was dehydrated.
It was the woman this time so I only got the hotdog.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mini hotdog:

Surprisingly, the hotdog was ok, the bun was soft.
The frankfurter, tomato ketchup and mustard tasted great together giving a tangy taste.

The Trigger Dog Family has grown

Trigger Dog Family (North Point)

Since my last visit, this place has been in the limelight.

They have created two more new hotdogs and palmiers.

There is going to be a cake cabinet soon with cakes, macarons and even cocktails.
I am really looking forward to this other hotdog with avocado filling.

Here was what we tried:

Both hotdogs were paired with frankfurters which has a nice soft texture that doesn't distract you when your eating it and the buns were lovely and soft.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Oliver:

Looking like a hotdog covered in cocktail sauce or mentaiko dressing, it is actually a hotdog with seafood on top.
I wasn't sure how they were going to taste together but this has now become my favourite hotdog because of the sauce and seafood.
The sauce is made from tomato, yoghurt and sesame making it slightly Turkish style because the tomato and yoghurt was really appetizing.
As for the seafood filling, it was tasty and not like the normal frozen ones which are rubbery and tasteless.
They were pieces of small mussels and pieces of squid which went really well with the Frankfurter.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Crazy dog:

This was a frankfurter topped with pork chili con carne which has a better delicate texture.
It is a tastier version of Wendy which is beef bolognaise (please see previous review).
The spices in this gave it more depth and kick and personally I love chili con carne.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chocolate brownie:

The chocolate brownie was as good as before and not cloyingly sweet.
I loved it warm because it was soft and had a strong cocao taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Palmiers:

I was surprised they made Palmiers.
They were quite nice because the buttery taste and smell was not too overpowering.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Looking forward to the coming hotdog with avocado filling and possible fried chicken!

Trigger ready? Dog ready? Let's go Hot Dog hunting

Trigger Dog Family (North Point)

There are not many good places for hot dogs and some of the good ones have closed down such as Toppings which was just a few roads from this place.
Other good Hot Dog places that I like include Tsuen Wan's Hot Dog family, Sai Kung's juicy J's and now this one.

I saw it listed on OpenRice and was imediately attracted to it because the nameTrigger Dog Family sounded American.

After checking their FB, I knew I was going to like it because their Hot Dog names and design was really nice and not Chinesey.

The owner is a designer which is why the design is flawless and how a hot dog shop should look with the matching decor and posters.

Basically they have five hot dogs which represent the Trigger family, each with a story behind it illustrated on their menu.

Their hot dogs are inexpensive because Hot Dogs are a common thing in the US just like sandwiches in the UK, so their basic hot dog only costs $20 a la carte.

The hot dog itself is quite big so it is extremely filling and they have potato wedges too if you order the set which are baked and not fried making it oiless.
All the ingredients are fresh and do not contain preservatives.
The buns were how they should be and not local sweet tasting buns!!!

Photos of the shop:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Menu:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Trigger's dog:

Frankfurter sausage with their signature sauce.
This is the most basic hot dog on the menu and it was really nice.
The frankfurter and soft hot dog bun were great together and the sauce complimented it nicely.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Essie's Dog:

Cumberland sausage and honey mustard.
This was a very meaty hot dog because of the cumberland sausage and it was very juicy dressed with sweet honey mustard.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Papa's Dog:

Debrecziner sausage with caramelized onion sauce.
The taste of this was slightly similar to Essie because it was sweet as well, but the taste of this dog was stronger because you can really taste the caramelized sweetness in the onions and the sausage had a smoky tone to it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Wendy's Dog:

Cheese knacker krainer sausage and tailor made bolognaise sauce.
I liked the meaty sauce on top and the sausage was filled with cheese in the middle.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Boston's dog:

Nueremberger sausage and black pepper sauce.
This was the one I was looking forward to and it tasted just as good as I expected it to taste because Nueremberger sausages are juicy and packed with flavour.
The pepper sauce was amazing too because there was an interesting aftertaste, there was a slighty minty feeling to it similar to sichuan spices.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Brownies:

The brownies were just as good as the hot dogs, they were freshly baked so they were still warm.
It would be great if it came with whipped cream.
They were soft and moist and tasted like those molten soft chocolate cakes with a rich chocolate content that was not cloyingly sweet.
It was so nice that I scoffed two pieces!
To avoid disappointment, call to check its availability because it is often sold out.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
In conclusion my favourites were Trigger, Wendy and Boston.
For frankfurter lovers, you can go for Wendy or Papa.
For sweetness lovers, you can go for Essie and Papa.
For people who like British sausages, you can go for Essie or Boston.

Get your jazzed up hot dog at J-dog

Previously went to the Tai Hang branch.
There are now two branches.

The second J-dog is in Wan Chai where Meilee used to be and very close to the MTR station.
Here they have more seats and better sitting arrangement even though it is quite small.
Basically the decor is the same with the large vending machine outside.
The ordering counter is near the entrance and after you have paid, you collect food at the the food counter.
There are so many different types of hot dogs and they even have the real ones displayed.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Noki Dog:
I chose this one because it was just crab meat and roe.
The crabmeat was surimi and there was cucumber in it too.
It was a nice light hotdog to eat similar to having Japanese crab roe salad in a bun.
I just felt that the bun was not soft enough.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Scrambled egg and chicken:
There was not much egg or chicken in this, and the portion was dinky which explains its price for $20.
The taste was the usual sweet teriyaki taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Deep fried scallops:
Again it was surimi meat, but for $16 I do not expect it be real scallops.
I wish there was some sauce because it was a bit dry.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

They have starfruit punch (carambole punch) on the menu, but it now seems to have been discontinued because there is a big cross on it sad
For takeaways, they have a huge cute paper bag for these hot dogs.
