Fuss free comfort dining

IKEA Café (Kowloon Bay)

I have always wanted to try this place but Megabox is inconveniently located.

Last time I attempted to try this place, there were quite a lot of people so I gave up.

This time I came during off-peak hours, so the queue was not that long!

Basically, you grab a trolley and push it along the counter and take/order the items that you want.

The ordering style is very common in other countries but I don't know why it takes a Swedish company to be the first in Hong Kong.

It is also mind baffling that other places have not copied this style because when something is successful and making money, there are always market followers.

Having the trolley made me feel at ease because I could get whatever I wanted and stacked it on the trolley without having to worry how I was going to bring it to the table.

There were quite a few items they did not have: salmon steak, Cheese and spinach pancakes, fish filet in breadcrumbs, spinach salmon pie and fried cheese.

My trolley of food!~

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Vegetable medallions:

The vegetable medallions were nice, mixed with lots of brocoli and potatoes.
However they were soggy and heavy compared to TUCK SHOP who cooked it better.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Swedish meatballs with cream sauce:

The meatballs were nice and soft, complemented by the delicious gravy and sweet jam.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Golden chicken wings:

The chicken wings were not memorable because they were tasteless.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Swedish curry shrimp with pasta:

The pasta curry was surprisingly nice, it tasted like a light curry which is similar to Japanese curries with the odd pieces of potatoes, prawns here and there.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Prawns:

The prawns were meaty with lots of prawn roe beneath the shell. They were sweet and slightly salty due to the brine that it was in.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Salmon lasagne:

The salmon was a bit too fishy and the tomato sauce did not match the lasagne.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

All those items above and it did not break the bank.
The price is similar to eating at Saizeyria.

Almond tart @ IKEA FiKET

IKEA FiKET (Kowloon Bay)
After dining at IKEA decided to try this place as well.

They serve light snacks and drinks at FiKET.
They had meatball burgers and cute bottles of soy milk.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Almond tart:
The almond tart was nice and nutty with lots of almond sprinkled on top.
It was not too sweet but the almond taste was not strong enough.

Great Gyozas @ Minami Kadofuji

Minami Kadofuji (Kowloon Bay)
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Shop: Minami Kadofuji

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Menu:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Gyoza:

Compared to Minami Aoyama and Mugendai, this was my favourite because the dumpling skin was taut and thin.
The filling was a good balance of meat, crispy aromatic vegetables.
I could taste chives, cabbages and a hint of ginger.
The dumplings at this place taste like the ones at Hide Ramen.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Naoyuki KAWASHIMA:

The ramen was topped with extra vegetables compared to other ramens styles and the thickness of the ramen strand was nearly as thick as udon, it was overly al-dente but when eaten with the crunchy vegetables there was a good balance in terms of mouthfeel.
It was topped with strong salty crushed garlic which gave the beanshoots an extra touch but with the broth it was quite salty.

Supplementary Information:This was a complimentary tasting thanks to MegaBox promotions, we tried all six joints that day.
As well as the tasting, it was so generous of them to give us coupons for IKEA, GigaSports and a cute Winnie the Pooh notebook.

Tsukemen @ MENBAN YAMAGISHI KAZUO

Special Tsukemen:

To be honest I am not fond of Tsukemen style ramen (noodles dipped in broth).
They were thick al dente ramen dipped in hot broth which was strong complemented by the crisp julienne pieces of cabbage.
The broth was quite nice because it was quite sweet.

The Cha-Cha noise at Mugendai

Mugendai (Kowloon Bay)

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Shop: Mugendai

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Menu:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Gyoza:

The dumpling skin was a bit thick and the pork and cabbage filling in the middle was a bit soft and bland.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Special Cha Cha Ramen:

This is called Cha Cha ramen because when it is cooked, it makes a noise when they put the lard in the boiling hot soup.
The broth was quite clear with bits of lard floating on top, but the taste of the broth was really light with fresh pork taste.
The pork slices had even layers of meat and fat.
The ramen tasted quite nice and the pork broth was balanced by the spring onions and beanshoots

A popular pick for starters @ BUTA GOD

TONKOTSU (Kowloon Bay)
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Shop: Buta God

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Menu:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Nikumashi Ramen:

When this arrived, it reminded me of Tokushima ramen that I had at Ippudo because of the thinly sliced delicate pork and the egg.
There was a hot spring egg in it which had a runny yolk, perfect with the pork and noodles.
I liked the noodles in this ramen because they were not that thick and the texture and appearance was a bit like wheat spaghetti.
For people who can't decide I would recommend this one because of the lovely lean pork and the ramen.

Fugenzo, my second favourite so far

Fugenzo (Kowloon Bay)

Shop: Fugenzo

Cute and colourful cutlery for kids I presume

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tonkotsu Special Miso Ramen:

This was my second favourite compared to Minami Aoyama.
The broth had a really nice taste because it had a hint of garlic and ginger mixed in with the miso soup base.
I liked the noodles after they were soaked in the broth for a bit because the texture was softer and absorbed the broth.
If it was not that that salty, it would have been perfect.
The egg was really nice too because the egg white was delicately flavoured by the broth and the yolk was slighty runny.

Minami Aoyama, you've got my vote

Minami Aoyama (Kowloon Bay)

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Shop: Minami Aoyama

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Menu:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tonkotsu special ramen:

Personally this was my favourite bowl of Ramen because they were my favourite thin white noodles, and the broth was light and delicious with a creamy pork and chicken taste.
I liked everything that was topped on top of the noodles from the pickled red ginger to the pickled vegetables.
The sliced pork was great too, it was lean, tender and fresh.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Gyoza:

The gyozas were quite soft and there was a good proportion of cabbage in it compared to the pork, but the ginger taste was quite strong.
