Mandarin splash out @ The Mandarin Cake Shop

I have always wanted to try their cakes so I was really chuffed that I could splash $100 on their bakery with a $100 gift certificate from Openrice. It was tempting to try their cakes and their savory items, but in the end I decided to get the savory items and a donut because the cakes should be indulged there with a cup of nice tea.

Before I went, I checked their online menu and reserved the ones I wanted through phone.

When I got there my order was packed and ready to collect.
I really liked their paper bag and lavish packaging.

Custard donut
It was dusted with castor sugar and inside there was generous custard filling.
The sweetness was just right.

Beef pie
I was expecting the beef to be chunks but it was minced beef inside and the gravy was rich.

Sausage with XO sauce quiche
This was interesting because it was made with XO sauce which is Chinese.
The sausage used was proper western sausage, and the filling of the quiche was quite eggy and cheesy.
It also contained pieces of scallop which must have come from the XO sauce.

Hokkaido milk froyo with reminiscence of Yoplait @ kiss n' joy

I have always wanted to try this place for the Strawberry yoghurt.
But twice I couldn’t find it because I went the wrong direction.

At the end of Hau Fook Road, I turned left where all the snack bars were located when I should have walked to the right hand side!

As there were four flavours, I did not know which flavour to get, so I asked to try the Strawberry because I wanted to get that anyway.
The staff must have read my mind because I wanted to try the hokkaido one as well and they gave me a sample of that too.

The décor of the shop was really nice, the colour theme was white and apple green.

The only disadvantage was the standing area was quite small, so it was easy to trip down the steps when it got packed.
In the end I decided to get the golden kiwi drink because golden kiwi is not always available.
As it was a cold day the drink was extremely thick. It tasted just right without the honey because the yogurt was sweet.
There was a strange feeling from drinking kiwi because kiwi seeds have enzymes on it, and after the blending process, the seeds got grounded releasing more enzymes.
It is very similar to biting into white grape seeds.

Next time I’ll be back for the froyo.
From the samples, the froyo was nice and thick, it was slightly lumpy.
The strawberry one tastes exactly like Yoplait’s strawberry fromage frais so I really liked it.

One of the toppings was interesting.
Parsley!

Quintuple chocolate layered cake experience @ Arome bakery

Tried this because it was made of five different layers of chocolate, it costs $20 per slice and it is not that big.

Basically the five different layers were: the crunchy base, dark chocolate sponge, milk chocolate sponge, chocolate mousse and the chocolate cream covering it.
Overall, it tasted nice but I wished there was more cake instead, the dark truffle filling in the middle was extremely hard and too rich.
