Omakase at HON10

Since my last visit to Hon 10, they are now serving Omakase which is good when you can't decide what to eat. There are two choices, but sadly only in Chinese at the moment. But then what you get is different each time so it doesn't matter if the menu is in Chinese or English because there will always be some appetizer, sashimi, soup, cooked item and sushi.

As I was there early, I got my favourite drink which is made with berry jam puree and carbonated water. It was refreshing and bubbly.

The omakase was a great start because the first appetizer was light and delicious. It was my favourite soybean sheets in delicious soymilk!!! The white sweetcorn was just angelic and sweet.

Next was the sashimi, I loved the maguro and the side of plum jelly which was really appetizing.

Next were the Alaskan crab legs which were juicy topped with generous amounts of truffle.

As a fish lover, the fried fish was good, the texture was flaky.

Next was the star of the show! Juicy cubes of wagyu beef. Each bite was soft and tender.

It was tasty on its own without the yuzu pepper but adding it made it taste even nicer with fiery salty kick to it. The finale was sushi which was a great ending leaving me almost full but with room for dessert.

Dessert finished with this smooth and silky beancurd pudding topped with grounded black sesame!

Overall, it was good from beginning to end and the best thing when you can't be bothered to decide.

Pretty, delicious and worth paying for

To be honest Japanese food is a headache because there are so many Japanese names which don't have English.
I don't know what is the best Japanese food but all the Japanese food that little_meg_siu_meg posts on instagram looks amazing but I wouldn't know where to find it in HK.
Anyway, I was really happy because the Japanese food here was different and some of it looked as good as what little_meg_siu_meg had.

As well as the taste, everything was beautifully presented and the price is reasonable compared to other omakase places.

I won't bother translating the Chinese into English because I am not a qualified translator and most of it doesn't have English when googled.

鮪腦天醬油漬‧刺身沙律卷‧螢烏賊芥末酢味噌

Started off with these three appetizers and my attention was drawn to these currant tomatoes which are so cute and tiny.
It would be great if they sliced one for photos.
Anyway, the fish was refreshing because it was in this sweet soy sauce, the texture was delicate because it comes from the head part of the tuna.
Then I had the squids which were made tasty by the mustard sauce.
I had the sashimi rolls last because the currant tomatoes were too cute to eat but there were microcress in the middle and seagrapes to balance the oiliness of the fish.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
浜飛魚‧角作

I can't seem to find the English name of this fish but this fish has a huge fin which the Chef has dried and used as decoration.
The fish was minced with spring and onions and ginger which gave it a pleasant taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
富山灣白蝦‧生螢烏賊‧活白魚踊食
Then came another set of delights.
Initially I thought it was fish sashimi but when I took a closer look, they were tiny prawns placed like a flower!
Each prawn was delicate and sweet.

After eating the prawns, had the squid which had a smoky taste.

The last dish was a challenge, they were ALIVE!

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
鯖棒鮨
SABA sushi

I loved the saba sushi because the fish was soft with a nice amount of oilyness which went well with the rice.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
鯛白子鹽燒
Red seabream milt (shirako)

Milt is the seminal fluid of fish.
I have tried this before but the one here was amazing because firstly it was big and secondly it tasted like molten egg yolk!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
大根鮑魚

Next was the abalone and daikon which I found a bit too sweet.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
紫蘇白魚天

These were delicate silky white bait fishes wrapped in perilla leaves and coated in tempura. They were crisp and scrumptious.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
汁煮姬榮螺‧八寸風凍鵝肝

Then we had whelk and duck liver.
The duck liver was velvety but it was quite heavy so I poured some sake in it which helped balance it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
穴子苗‧水母酢
Then we had jellyfish tentacles and baby conger conger.

The conger conger was new to me and considered exotic because I don't often come across conger conger in my culinary journeys!

Both had a similar crispy jelly texture flavoured by the appetizing vinegar.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
櫻花蕎麥麵

Then we had soba noodles made with sakura flowers which were pretty and pink.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
櫻蝦豆腐湯

To end the meal, we had this prawn soup which was intense because it was boiled with prawn shells, prawns and lots of prawns, then topped with lots of sakura shrimps so the taste was really prawny so I loved it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
手作水信玄餅

For dessert we had this beautiful water cake which had a sakura flower in the middle.
It was too good to eat but it was similar to jelly and the sweetness was just right.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
I will probably come back again because it was only $680 and it was full of surprises.
The omakases I have tried before just served sashimi and more sashimi which was really boring followed by the typical miso soup and boring green tea dessert.

Omakase at Sushi Zen

Sushi Zen (Jordan)

The idea of a Omakase restaurants is that you can interact with the chefs.

Quoted from Wiki:
Omakase is a Japanese phrase that means "I'll leave it to you" (from Japanese "to entrust"). In American English, the expression is used at sushi restaurants to leave the selection to the chef. The chef will generally present a series of plates, beginning with the lightest fare and proceeding to heaviest, richest dishes.
The phrase is not exclusive to service of raw fish with rice, and can incorporate grilling, simmering, or other cooking techniques as well.
Customers ordering omakase style expect the chef to be innovative and surprising in the selection of dishes, and the meal can be likened to an artistic performance by the chef. Ordering omakase can be a gamble; however, the customer typically receives the highest-quality fish in stock at a less expensive cost than if it had been ordered à la carte.

At Sushi Zen, there were two sets to choose from: Bamboo or Pine.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Bamboo $480:
2 Appetizers, 2 kinds of sashimi, grilled dish, 3 pieces of assorted sushi, 1 chopped fatty tuna roll, miso soup and dessert
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pine $780:
2 Appetizers, 5 kinds of sashimi, simmered dish, grilled dish, 5 pieces of assorted sushi, 1 chopped fatty tuna roll, miso soup and dessert
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
To begin with, we had kelp and finely grated radish strands placed in front of us.
They were there as refreshers when the sashimi got a bit heavy.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
We began our Omakase journey with the appetizers.
Started off with prawn with salmon roe and wasabi.

It was followed by a thick meaty scallop which was semi seared.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Then came the sashimi:
The Halibut slices were translucent and delicate paired with a refreshing sauce.

The Conch had a lovely crisp texture and it didn't really need sauce because it was sweet.

Then came the Horse mackerel with spring onion and ginger sauce which had a lovely spring onion and gingery taste with a hint of soy sauce.

The Striped jack was a little difficult to eat because of the skin.

This was my favourite because the Fatty tuna just melted in your mouth with a creamy taste.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Simmered dish:

If you go for the pine set, then you get a simmered dish which varies on every visit because omakase is different everytime.
It was delicious fish mixture at the base which had an interesting starchy texture covered in a light gravy.
The prawn and sea urchin were fresh and light.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled dishes:
The Fish with crispy rice came with the Bamboo set.
I loved the crispy rice which gave the fish more mouthfeel and a roasted flavour.

The beef wagyu was served with the other set.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Assorted sushi
Began with my favourite arc clam sushi which has a really nice metallic taste.

The botan shrimp was huge and sweet with bursts of flavour coming from the salmon roe.

grilled seared muscle sushi which melts in your mouth!!

The sea urchin warship was creamy wrapped in crisp laver sheets.

The grilled fatty tuna was just as good as fatty tuna sashimi because it was tasty and melts in your mouth with a lovely charred taste.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tuna roll:

The tuna roll was unique because it was different to the ones I had because it had pieces of pickled radish with made it refreshing and less heavy with a nice crunch.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Prawn head miso soup:

The soup had pieces of prawn roe in the soup which made it rich but the prawn flavour was not strong enough.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Dessert:

It was milk pudding with green tea sauce and red beans.
The taste was so yummy and the milk pudding was really silky and creamy with a fragrant coconut taste because there was roasted dessicated coconut in it.
The green tea sauce was not too bitter or grassy which was great with the creamy pudding.
