Pineapple cakes in Pretty collectable tins

Kee Wah (Diamond Hill)

Thank you Mjqueen7e for getting me these pineapple cakes that come in a pretty tin.

There are three colours and each one has a Chinese proverb on it.

Inside the tin, there are four different flavours:
walnut, melon, coco de nata and pineapple

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Coco de nata:

This was the one I was most excited to try because I have not seen many pineapple cakes with coco de nata in it.
The pieces of coco de nata was delicious because it was lovely and chewy.

The sweetness was just right and it tastes like the usual pineapple cakes with coco de nata in it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Walnut:The walnut one was similar to the above and had pieces of walnut in it giving it a delicious nutty taste and balances the sweetness of the overall pineapple cake.
The pieces of walnut gave it a nice crunch too.

Thai Pineapple fried rice @ 美食吧

I have never liked pineapple fried rice but this one was nice because they did not add sugar to the rice nor were the pineapples syrupy sweet.

Anyway, I suddenly had an inspiration to make apple fried rice with chicken.
The fine diced apples should be added at the last minute when the fried rice is done so they do not go sour.
The apples should be diced to about 5mm and green apples should be used.

Summer donuts @ Krispy Kreme

Got some takeaway donuts from Krispy Kreme, tried 3 of their new flavours out of the 6 choices of lime, mango, melon, pineapple, blueberry and cranberry.

Cranberry:
This was my favourite, since cranberry was sprinkled evenly over the icing, giving it some chew to the donut.

Blueberry:
Not bad, tasted of blueberries too.

Pineapple:
This was my least favorite, since the pineapple flavor was a bit artificial, if it had a little sourness in it, it would mimic the real pineapple taste. Also there was only one piece of the pineapple in the donut, not as good as the cranberry, because that was sprinkled all over.

Lime and pineapple punch @ KFC

Ordered the lime and pineapple punch, tasted ok, basically it is 7-up with pineapple pulp mixed in and a wedge of lime.

Not much in lime taste, the 7-up is more prominent, and the taste of pineapple is there when you eat it.
Basically a drink of elements to themselves, all the elements in the same cup, but not fused together.

Famous rolls @ Jenny Bakery

There have been many reviews for Jenny’s Bakery, but I still haven’t distinguished whether they are real western cookies or Chinese version of cookies so it hasn’t been on my priority list to try.

I only tried them recently when my friend got some, apparently they are the Taiwanese pineapple cakes/rolls. However the ones at Jenny bakery have a more crunchy buttery shortcrust.
The normal Taiwanese pineapple rolls are rectangle shaped, exactly like the fig rolls (see picture).

The ones at Jenny Bakery appear like cookies, the filling wrapped in the crust.
It smells very buttery and rich, and the filling is generous too, although everyone saids its Pineapple, to me the colour and taste is more like Apricot.
The texture of the whole roll is chewy, and the crust crumbles and gets mixed in with the filling.

Chinese pina colada @ Hui Lau Shan

These days I am beginning to like huilaushan, I have been trying mango free products.
(Mango is a popular in hk, yes i know, but i hate the taste of mango)

This time I got the Golden pineapple with crystal jelly to go with my dumplings from the new four seas dragon.

The layers of the drink was quite pretty, clear jelly at the bottom ( crystal jelly), layered by clear yellow, then coconut milk on top with some pineapple pieces.

After mixing the layers, I found notes of vanilla, then sweetness of pineapple and the crystal jelly.
Overall it was a bit like Pina Colada.

Althought HLS claims to be healthy, yes I do agree fruit is healthy, but sometimes I think too much sugar is not healthy.
I agree sugar should be added, but for natrually sweet fruits such as mango and banana there is no need, infact this is why i like smoothies, as the banana is a good natural sweetener to balance out the sourness of the berries.,

But anyway, I requesteds for less sugar in my pineapple drink, it was fairly sweet, so I would hate to imagine the the sweetness of normal one!!

Service Madly Lousy = SML

Apart from the Quarry Bay MiscoCool, this is the second restaurant featuring communal tables but in larger lounge.

The whole concept is fresh, and vibrant, nice for the young chics and boys to show their pride in a lively lounge. It also reminds me of school dinner days too, a rejuvenation of youth, relive the young days again, sitting amongst other hip and cool people.

If you do not fancy being on display, I guess it needs time getting used to, like California fitness gym for a specific part of the target market.

Anyway, sat down in the middle of a large bench table, people started filling beside us, but there was no one sitting on our left hand sides, so we placed our bags there. We were ushered to place the bag on one side, then a while later, the waiters from the opposite side ushered us to place the bags on the other side, playing shuffling bags here if u've played shuffling chairs!!

Food ordered:

Chicken Confit & Foie Gras with Truffle SaladBasically two pieces of sliced baguette served with salad and a pot with shredded chicken, bits of foie gras topped with poppy seeds. The chicken was not dry or chewy, and the bits of silky foie gras buttered the chicken, but there was not that much of foie gras. I thought it should have been layered chicken, then foie gras then the poppy seeds.

Prawn Toast with truffleSame comment as Babedolphin, no taste in truffle, overly greasy, I suppose the bitterness of the alcohol sauce took away that greasy taste.
Honestly I have had better prawn toasts at Takeaways in UK.

Octopus salad in olive oilThis was a very good mixed of diced yellow peppers, leaves, onions and the octopus, the octopus was chopped tentacles which were very big in diameter, I thought the octopus would be chewy, but it wasn’t at all. There was also some sort of jelly that had formed on the octopus, so it is probably the tinned version.

Lamb kebabThis was a huge stick of minced Lamb on a stick, I tried it with the olive oil from the salad, it was quite nice, and the lamb was strongly covered in Cajun powder. The yoghurt sauce that came with it was lovely, pure sour yoghurt.

Mushroom risottoThis had a very strong smell, but not that strong when I ate it, the texture of the rice was a bit hard, like red grain rice.

I was contemplated to order the Hangar steak and chips, but then I decided to order two desserts, which finished the meal quite elegantly! I wanted Gnocci too, but it wasn’t listed on the menu anymore!!

Pot of chocolate w/chocolate mousse & fudgeThis was yummy chocolate mousse with bits of chocolate cake covered with white cream and topped with two pieces of fudge.

Lime cream w/vanilla pineapple & coconut jellyThere were bits of coconut jelly with cutely diced pineapple pieces, layered with lime cream at the bottom, refreshingly delicious, leaving you with a slight hungriness that you will be back for more next time.

Lastly, we tried to paid for the bill, but one of the dreaming waiters either forgot to print out the bill or there was something wrong with the order, so had to ask another waiter got it for us.

Price wise, I think it’s quite reasonable for around $300 considering we ordered food with truffles, foie gras. I think for a good meal, its best to pick out the fine stuff rather than the stuff you can get anywhere, or it just defeats the purpose.

Beef rendang @ Katong

After trying numerous Singapore cuisines in HK, this is the best so far.

I used to get Laksa from here nearly thrice a week, but once the Laksa was super spicy, so I got deterred from it.

I decided to give it another go, and the Laksa was back to normal, not that spicy.

Ordered Laksa with beef Rendang, the Laksa tasted as good as usual, and the beef rendang was authentic according to my SG friend.

The drinks were perfect too, the barley water was not too sweet, and had a hint of pandan, the texture of the barley water was slightly thick.
The lime soda was literally lime + soda, a can soda with wedges of lime which tasted quite refreshing.

Finally the dessert was mango coconut sago, and as a Anti-Asian dessert person, I really liked it, it was pieces of mango on top of Coconut paste and sago, which is much more natural than mango pudding. The coconut paste was real coconut instead of the processed coconut cream which is a bit fake, and the syrup on top made the whole thing sweet naturally rather than pre-mixed.

Cream cheese and pineapple puff @ Yamazaki bakery

Got two pastries: custard cube and pineapple cheese puff

Custard cube:
Tastes like an ordinary pastry, except in a shape of a cube filled with custard inside.

Pineapple and cream cheese puff:
I wished they just made it into an apple turnover, the pineapple was nice, but overly moist, just not as good as apple!
The puff pastry was perfect, you could smell how buttery it was, and it was nice and flaky topped with melted crunchy sugar on top.
The pastry was filled with sweet cream cheese and pineapple, just felt it was ruined by the pineapple.
Just plain cream cheese or cheese with apple would have tasted good!

Noodles in pineapple broth @ 肥牛粉 PHO DELIGHT

Previously this used to be a Singaporean restaurant Pasar, then it closed down, next came Satay City which didnt stay for long and now PHO DELIGHT.

I can imagine it being busy for lunches, but after office hours, Wan Chai is not a likely place for dinner.
There is also another branch in Causeway Bay which would probably fare better being in a shopping and working location.

The menu basically offers noodles in soup, the usual rices, however the prices are a bit expensive for simple noodles.
I ordered ho-fun with prawns in sour soup, it was basically noodles in tangy sauce with a few prawns on top, and pieces of pineapple, tomato.
The soup was quite acidic, and the ho fun was a bit too soft, but overall it was ok, so lets see how long they will be here for.

The other spicy beef noodles were very spicy, it was so spicy, you could feel the heat of the chilli when you smell it,
Taking a tiny sip of the soup, was enough to make me go red!

I wanted to try the grilled beef, but the sour soup sounded more interesting, so if they are still here on my next visit, I shall give it a try.
