[永康美食] Oily Chinese Crueller

Only came here unwillingly because the group wanted congee.
The price is reasonably cheap for Sai Kung.
The congee wasn't my cup of tea because I found it too creamy and the Chinese cruellers were so oily that my hands ended up too oily to take a photo of them.

November sees the best of the British at The Cabin Cafe & Restaurant

With a month of Best of British coming up, I have decided to write about The Cabin because they serve real English food.
This is my regular haunt because it tastes just like home.
It was nice that other foodies who have lived in UK before liked The Cabin.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
We started off with afternoon tea.

A good selection of sweet and savoury treats that had trifles, scones and sandwiches.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Non alcoholic sangria:

I loved this drink because it was fruity and tasted really natrual.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
prawn cocktail:

Crisp lettuce and prawns but I would have liked the sauce to be stronger.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Juicy beef yorkshire pudding:

A sunday roast summarized in a Yorkshire pudding. It was a mini Yorkshire pudding filled with a slice of juicy roast beef topped with creamy horseradish which had a lovely mustard kick to it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Cream cheese stuffed portobello mushroom:

A tasty earthy mushroom with cheese and crispy herbed breadcrumb on top.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
roasted red pepper and mascarpone soup:

A flawless soup that was refreshing and appetizing.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Herb crusted grilled salmon with mango sauce/sour cream:

The salmon was delicate and tasty complemented by the herbs and sauces.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Lancashire lamb hotpot:

Tasted like home, delicious pieces of lamb in gravy which you could taste the sweet onions and carrots.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Cottage pie:

The cottage pie was divine with lovely chunks of meat and young carrot slices that were sweet in a rich gravy that had a fragrant Thyme flavour.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Roasted belly of pork with apple sauce:

Nice pork with a crispy skin that went fab with the apple sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Lemon merinuge:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Strawberry Pavola:

A nice and light meringue that was not too sweet!

My secret and cozy cabin

I rarely go to SK because the transport there is so troublesome.
The Cabin is located in the heart of SK yet not many people know this place because when everyone gets off the minibus they head to the town.
Anyway, found out about The cabin on openrice and discovered it was British fare so I had to try it.

Since K's British closed down I haven't had a decent meal.

The Cabin made my day because the decor is like a typical room in the UK matched with the chairs and tables.

At the front of the restaurant, I liked the display.

I went a bit crazy and ate too much like the first time at K's British because the food was just too good.

Here was what I had:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mini Yorkshire Pudding Canapés:

This was such a SMART canape, it was like a Sunday roast summarized in a Yorkshire pudding. It was a mini Yorkshire pudding filled with a slice of juicy roast beef topped with creamy horseradish which had a lovely mustard kick to it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Cottage pie with chips:

The cottage pie was divine with lovely chunks of meat and young carrot slices that were sweet in a rich gravy that had a fragrant Thyme flavour.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Children's Bangers and chips:

This was damn good because I love pork sausages and these sausages were too good.
Found out they were Walls Sausages.
The bangers and chips was actually a kids meal but because I ate so much I asked them to leave the beans.
It was the best sausage I have ever tasted because the sausage skin was amazingly crispy like Filo pastry, you could hear the crispiness of the sausage when you put your knife and fork to it yet the middle of the sausage was soft and moist with a yummy pork and herb taste.

Both the sausages and pie were served with chips and they are chippy chips which are peeled, hand-cut and fried so they have a soft texture with a shiny surface and a natrual sweet potatoey taste.
I asked for vinegar to go with these divine chips.

I am so happy, there is another place that has decent chips so I can't wait to see Fish and Chips on the menu.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Lemon Meringue:

Had the lemon meringue to finish and it was sweet with a strong lemon curd at the bottom.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Apple crumble with custard:

I had the apple crumble too because it was served with REAL custard and not FAKE VANILLA sauce.
The apple crumble wasn't too sweet and tasted delicious with real custard which I found comforting.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
vallebelbo fior di vigna moscato:

This was complimentary to celebrate their recent opening.
I don't drink wine but it was sweet and aromatic so I actually liked it because it tasted like a dessert wine.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Can't wait to come back because they said there is going to be afternoon tea and they are updating the menu.

Cost per person HKD:$300

Jaspas could be better

Unfortunately had to go to Sai Kung so went here for a quick bite.
I regretted not going to Mandy's or having fish and chips or the burger place nearby.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Turkish toasted Ham and cheese sandwich:

The ham was a bit dry and they used processed cheese which is it not proper cheese.

Super oily at Hung Kee Seafood Restaurant

Again I did not choose this place but went here for dimsum which is pretty annoying because you have to go and get them yourselves.

Shortly after dim sum I wanted to throw up because the food was too oily.

The taro croquette was the only item I liked because the taro filling was really tasty and velvety but the coating was too oily.

Boiled plants!!
I don't know why in HK they serve vegetables just as they are without cutting them into smaller pieces.

The worst dimsum was the steamed buns, the bun was so dry and dense that you had difficulty swallowing them and it seems that HKers can't produce decent bread or steamed buns because I think they lack self raising powder in the recipe!!
The beancurd prawn rolls were weird, they contained Chinese celery which ruined the taste.
Out of all the beancurd prawn rolls I have tried, this was the first to contain it!
However in Sai Kung, there are many weird dishes such as lobster and cheese cooked with ginger.

Expat’s secret in Sai Kung

As well as SK, there is a bigger branch in Wan Chai, but the Wan Chai one is probably better.

Anyway, as there were not many good Western food choices for in SK, I ended up here.

It was filled with expats and more expats came for late night curries.

I ordered the rice with peas and mushrooms and a Malai, which the waiter said was a popular dish with the locals. I knew it was not going to be my cup of tea after he said that because the dish was going to be sweet and it was, but I just liked the potato croquettes, which were rather sticky and chewy.

The rice was not tasty on its own because it needed curry to go with it but without the curry it was just salty with a strong cardamom taste.

Thick toast with apricot jam at Sai Kung's Sai Woo Restaurant

Didn't want to dine here but dined here because the others chose this place.

There wasn't much I liked but the toast was probably something that I could eat so I ordered the toast with jam.

It turned out to be a thick toast with apricot jam, it was the typical Chinese toast with a not so springy texture.
I would have preferred a thinner slice of toast because the bread isn't that good but the jam does not fail because most jams taste the same.

Nice peppery broth at 京麵 (西貢)

This time tried the noodles with peppery broth and chose the flat noodles.
The broth was better and not as salty as my first visit with a strong white pepper taste.
It is a pity that I won't back because I just don't like the noodles they offer but the broths are delicious.

Belgian rostis at 炸魚薯條 (西貢)

The weather is cooler which is the perfect time to go to Sai Kung as nobody goes in this cold weather.

This time they had these new Belgian Rostis so I got them.

My favourite was the vegetable one because of the vegetable and potato bits.
The bacon one is also good as well.

To finish off I had a marmite and cheese bap because I love marmite.
