[Rolling in Congee] My dream congee

Many people have mixed reactions on this new congee joint ROLLING IN CONGEE because they serve modern congee but I was really excited on giving it a visit.

Went one afternoon and it was closed so went back another day.

From the Chinese name I was expecting the congee to be expensive but the most expensive one costs $29.

I liked the way it stood out because the menu obviously had design to it with a purple theme matched by their aprons.
Their congee also appealed to me because they had really nice English names to match it like Taurus, Bronze Age, Ruby Rose, Magenta romance etc.

As well as savory congee they had sweet congee which really makes sense because in UK we have RICE PUDDING which is similar to congee but thicker and sweet with milk, so the sweet congee is a great option for people who are allergic to milk
The next thing I loved were the pots and utensils she used because it was colourful and modern with an advantage because these pots are the non stick type!!

For each congee, all the ingredients are in small tubs, so no matter who is running the joint, the congee should taste consistent because the portions are the same.

Moving on to the congee, I really liked the current choices and the creativity such as Taurus which has beef and onions and the pairing of these two never fail.
There was also chowder congee which is obviously seafood!
With all these choices, it was really hard for me to decide so I ended up getting the Bronze age, Silky Milky (plain congee with extra salted egg yolk and fermented beancurd), Magenta romance and Matcha congee.
The best thing was that you could order salty egg yolk and fermented beancurd to go with the congee because I just love them so I got that with the plain congee.

All their congees are made with Australian pearl rice which gives its a silky viscous thick consistency that doesn't go runny after a while.
I believe they will come up with some more exciting creations soon because you can do so much with congee like adding oats, quinoa and using different rices.
Once, I even dreamed of breakfast congee made with bacon, sausage and egg!!!
Anyhow, I prefer consuming congee at room temperature or slightly hotter because there is no point to scald your tongue and not being able to taste anything for days.
Perhaps, I come from a country that is cooler compared to Hong Kong so I can't eat, touch or taste things that are really hot.

Moving on to the congee that I got, here is what I thought:
++++++++++
SPOON:

Normally you get that weird shaped plastic spoon which usually cuts my mouth but the spoon they give you is really ergonomic and actually holds a good spoonful of congee which is worth mentioning because the whole congee experience is improved.
++++++++++
Bronze Age:

To start I had the savory first which had Hokkaido dried scallops, mini dried scallops, salty egg, century eggs, fish cubes and pork pieces.
The congee was tasty as expected because you could really taste the scallops and everything as the salty egg gives it flavour as well as the pork which was fresh and meaty.
++++++++++
Silky milky with extra salty egg yolk and fermented beancurd:

The silky milky was plain congee which was viscous with a lovely translucent colour to it.
Tried adding both separately and it really is acquired taste for the fermented beancurd but I thought it was delicious because it has a quirky saltiness with a hint of Chinese wine.
++++++++++
Magenta romance:

This is a sweet congee which is similar to rice pudding but without the milk with sweet potato and purple sweet potato.
It was nice and colourful with a lovely purple colour.
Tried it hot and couldn't really taste anything so I took it home and put it in the fridge which made it much nicer because you could taste the ginger when it was cooler.
I have no complaints on this and loved it.
++++++++++
Matcha:

The matcha congee which is served in the afternoon contains dumplings and red bean paste.

Again, I couldn't eat it hot so tried it at room temperature and after refrigerating it.
The consistency of this is thick and viscous which made it taste like a perfect rice drink with a hint of matcha, just the thing for breakfast which is filling an quick.
Rice drinks could be the thing because in Mexico, they have horchata and in Venezuela they have Chichi.
Tried both and they were so divine and filling.
Also the Chinese have a similar concept called rice water, a health drink that is now popular served by checkcheckcin.
++++++++++
To summarize, I will be back soon and hopefully they will have some new congees.
The sweet congees should definitely be eaten at room temperature or chilled and it was really good that they were not too sweet!~!

[永康美食] Oily Chinese Crueller

Only came here unwillingly because the group wanted congee.
The price is reasonably cheap for Sai Kung.
The congee wasn't my cup of tea because I found it too creamy and the Chinese cruellers were so oily that my hands ended up too oily to take a photo of them.

Dreamy delicious congee at Dream Tofa

The menu was limited before, they only had silky tofu dessert and fishballs but now they have congee and savoury beancurd.
These new items definitely lured me there because I love savoury snacks more than sweet.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Congee with soybeans and pork:

The congee tasted really nice because there were lots of soybeans in it which were tasty and had some chew to it.
It would be good if they put tofu in the congee because I reckon it would taste nice.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Marinated beancurd:

The tofu was hot and silky which was complemented by the sweet sauce and spicy chili bean sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Will be back for more.

NOT going to try their savoury stuff EVER again!~ Ice Cream Gallery

Previously tried their lobster and escargot icecreams at their Kwun Tong branch which were horrible not because it was lobster or escargot but because it was sweet.
I have also tried their sweet icecreams which fared better.

This time they came up with this interesting congee flavour with fried dough sticks.
Before ordering I asked the staff if it was SWEET OR SAVOURY and she said it was definitely not sweet hence I ordered it.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Congee icecream:
油炸鬼白粥

The texture was a failure because it was hard and powdery.
When you put the spoon in it, it was crumbled into frozen chalk.

The worst part was the taste because it was so chalky and sweet when I was expecting a savoury taste.
Even if I had a real cold congee it wouldn't be sweet!
Anyway, apart from congee, there were also gingko nuts in the icecream.

$43 for a bowl of oyster congee

Since my last visit in 2009, the price of congee has gone from $28 to $43, an increase of $15.
That's around a dollar every year!!!!

Luckily, the congee still tasted delicious because the congee had strong oyster tasted with hints of dried fruit peel.

There were about 4 big oysters in the congee, but they looked different to the ones I tried in 2009 because they were brown compared to the grey ones on my last visit which you can refer to on my previous review.

http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=1968176&tc=sr2rvw&con=rvw

I recommend having the oysters last or with the congee when you have nearly finished because they have such a strong taste that the tasty congee will become tasteless if you eat the oysters first.
When you bite into the oysters, it crumbles into sandy lumps, just like salted egg yolk.

Caught by the confusing Ad

Walked past one evening and saw this poster!
It was rather confusing because it seems to imply all you can eat but it is not all you can eat.

As I was a fan of their crab congee I didn't mind going back again for it.

When I went in, I asked them about the confusing promotion and they said it was a GIMMICK because they are located on 127 Wing Lok Street, so they simply did a special offer for the congee at $1+27 ie the congee costs $28 only!!!

Although it was not all you can eat, $28 was a bargain because it normally costs around $5X.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Crab congee:
I had a better experience this time because it was served in a ceramic bowl with a proper metal spoon.
The quality was better too and you could see how much crab was in it because the colour was lovely and vivid.

Not to mention, the taste was amazing, rich in crab essence flavoured by the saltiness of the crab roe with lots of crabmeat in it.
As well as the crab, the freshness of the spring onion and the congee tasted great together.

I wish this promotion would last forever.

KFC's Congee

Hong Kong's KFC are no good with fried chicken but their Fried Dough sticks were a success.

When they started their Fried Dough sticks a while ago they did not offer congee, but now they do!!!!!

There is a big size and small size.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chicken congee:
It came in a big plastic bowl.
It was quite impressive because the congee was not oily compared to other places and contained in a sturdy plastic bowl which did not have any CFC odour to it.
The taste was quite good but it was slightly bland with lots of chicken in it that was soft tender white meat.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried dough sticks:
The fried dough sticks were as good as before, they were not oily with a fresh soft chewy centre and a crispy exterior.

Birthday congee

Freshlodge Limited (Sheung Wan)

Thanks to <<IVY>> and Mjqueen7e for taking me here for my birthday.

I really wanted to try their congee after reading Ivy's review because the congee is not any normal congee.

This restaurant specializes in seafood but serves congee too!
Normally people will have congee when they are sick and there are restaurants that specialize in congee.

Seeing CRAB ROE CONGEE in big letters in English amongst the other dishes oddly stood out because the other dishes were Western and Japanese.

After ordering, they give you a bottle with a number so they know which table to bring the food to.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chegworth valley drinks:

Great juices from the UK.
The apple and rhubarb one I had was really nice and refreshing.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Crab roe congee:

Amazing congee that was definitely delicious.
It was rich with lots of crab meat and tasty crab roe which gave the congee even more flavour.
There were pieces of sweetcorn and pork in the congee.
