Warming sweet potato drink with French tarts

I never dine at Hui Lau Shan unless there is something new because the usual choices are too local and it is just mangoes and coconut which I do not like.

Bravo! they now serve some French tarts by Boncolac.

The new baby white peach cheesecake was interesting because the peach was green.

There was blueberry cheesecake as well.

Hokkaido sweet potato drink:

I wasn't impressed at first because I got my hands sticky when I held the glass cup!

Anyway, apart from sweet potato, there were lots of other goodies in the drink such as purple sweetcorn and you can really taste the sweet potato infused in the drink.
The only disappointment was that it was way too sweet.

Strawberry tart:

The strawberry tart was really nice, it had plump mushed strawberries on top with a thin layer of custard between the tart and the fruit.

Turkish baked potato @ 薯皇 Big Potato

As a brit, we all love the Jacket, so had to give this a try.

Although it isnt really the typical british baked potato with butter, there are lots of choices, ie seafood, mexican etc. Actually you can say the toppings are like a normal brit jacket, except the skin is not that crunchy.

Nevertheless, the potato is cut in half, and the guy mashes the inside nice and soft, so it is very convenient to eat, with no hard clumps. Then he carefully adds the toppings and then the sauce.

The ocean one I ordered has prawns, sweetcorn, olives, purple cabbage, with mayonnaise, their home made pink sauce and ketchup, personally I didnt think Ketchup would match with it, so I opted without.

But anyway apart from the burnt skin, it all tasted good, a nice combination.
Presentation was pretty too, all the different colours, ie the sweetcorn, sauces, and the purple cabbage.

If only the surrounding was better, there is an irritating dustbin infront of the shop, where you have to endure the nasty second hand smoke from smokers, and the burnt cigarette butts.

Anyway as for the turkish owner, I believe he used to be the chef at "Our Restaurant"

Yamagata corn Ramen @ Ajisen

I tried the new sweetcorn noodles, basically it is noodles in sweet corn based soup, with two pieces of stuffed sweetcorn!!!!!

新登場 - 山形大粟拉麵 Yummy Yamagata corn Ramen
香脆的天婦羅裏面充滿彈牙的墨魚膠;加埋日本山形縣的粟米濃湯底!

The stuffed sweet corn is basically like the Chinese stuffed vegetables such as halved bell peppers stuffed with fish patty, however this one is sweetcorn stuffed with squid patty.

how is it done!! can anyone tell me!!~!
see wat i mean:

The reason why it was very intriguing, is because if you slice the sweetcorn from the edge of the stalk the sweetcorn seeds have nothing to support it and become separated seeds. Yet all the sweetcorn seeds were intact and arranged like a sweetcorn with the squid patty on the other side. I really doubt each of the seeds were stuck on the patty. And the whole piece was fried in tempura coating.

Anyway back to the sweet corn noodles, I really loved it, the sweetcorn soup was very interesting, it tasted like WHITE RABBIT SWEETS, especially on the first sip and when you swallow it.

I also tried the prawn dumplings, they were as good as the normal ones, except the primary ingredients were beef and prawn! A contrasted combination from strong beef to light flavour of the prawn!

Sweetcorn and fish gas bladder soup @ Original taste workshop

There is alot more choice than they previously had, so this time tried the sweet corn soup with fish tummy.

I was expecting sweet corn and fish yummy as the main ingredients, but it was mainly chicken and sweet corn.

Overall it tasted how it should, just felt it should be called sweetcorn chicken soup with fish maw.

Chinese farmhouse dishes @ MX

Ever since Maxim's MX introduced the Farmhouse dishes series I have always wanted to try it.
There are many dishes in the series, but the two I wanted to try were the fish patty with long beans, and the lemon chicken. Apparently there are alot of different dishes in that series.

The whole concept is brilliant, but the marketing let it down.

It was hard to find out which dishes were being served in advance, there was nothing on their website or restaurant.
Instead, I had to check the menu there everynow and then.
Once I walked past and it was serving braised pig's tail and peanuts which sounds interesting.

Finally, they had the ones I wanted to try, but the soup that day was beef, not fish maw and sweetcorn that I wanted to try.

I do not eat at Maxim's MX much, because the menu is confusing, but this time I was impressed at the organisation, as you collect the food when the number is called out.

Egg and beef thick soup
This was light and slightly viscous, with lots of beef in it.
The beef had been soda-rized, so it was soft.
There was some spring onion and coriander garnishing on top.
I liked the soup, but I didnt like the film of oil they put on top even though its for cosmetic purposes.
☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Lemon Chicken
The chicken was served on a pile of fried vermicelli, the lemon sauce tasted how it should, however the chicken was slightly dry.
The chicken had chicken skin and was not coated in flour and fried.
I would have preferred if the chicken was cut into smaller managable pieces.

Fish patty with long beans
This was the dish that got my attention, and it also was the best!
With usual fish patty from the market, or restaurants that serve it, it always contains grounded bones, unless you go to the overly expensive places.
The fish patty here did not contain any bones, I felt safe eating it knowing, I would not get any piercing injuries in my mouth.
The patty seemed to have chicken in it as well, it was firmer than the usual fish patty, and the colour was slightly different, not so grey, but a peachy colour.
Before the patty was cooked, a coiled up long green bean was curled up like a coil and affixed to the patty by being pressed on top of the patty.
The patties were then served in rich brown gravy which contained black bean, slight chili and orange peel.

Stir fried prawns and cucumber
This dish was very light, well suited for the eldery apart from the prawns.
Anyway, the cucumber could have been cut to smaller pieces, it was too big and kept slipping when using chopsticks to pick them up.
☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Fish maw and sweetcorn soup
The soup which I was long awaiting for didnt taste as good as the beef one.
It tasted of sesame oil.
☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Overall, I felt that the Farmhouse dishes were very impressive, the quality was as good as the dishes in specialised Cantonese cuisine places.
If only the marketing was better with information available on their website with the daily specials, or a menu timetable with the full range of dishes that they plan to serve.

Sweetcorn tea @ hung fook tong

Got the sweetcorn tea because it was different, the ingredients in it were water, cane sugar, baked corn, corn silk, black tea powder, vitamin C, flavour according to the label.

It was pleasant to drink, but left a slightly sour aftertaste.

The sweetness was just right, but leaves the mouth slightly viscous from th cane sugar.
It tastes a bit like chocolate tea without sugar.
