[Review] IKEA at Ampere Way

Having tried IKEA in Hong Kong, I was curious what the IKEA in UK offered.

Before I went, I browsed the UK IKEA site to see if there was anything exciting.
I was pleased to see that they had the Miso Beef Rib, Chicken & Mushroom Wellington and the Beef Bourguignon on their website.

Unfortunately, all of that wasn't available so I had to try other dishes which were the Marinated salmon with mustard and dill sauce and salad mix, Quarter Jerk Chicken with Chips and the Vegetable Biryani with Veggieballs.
So the only new stuff I ended trying was the Jerk chicken and the Biryani which is not available in Hong Kong.

The salmon was pretty much the same in the sense it was flavoured with dill served with salad.
The Jerk chicken was surprisingly good as the Jerk sauce was spicy with a nice kick to it.

The Vegetable Biryani was a little too soft and it was not hot enough.

Hopefully if I get to visit IKEA again, there will be a different menu.

The thing I like about the IKEA in UK is the tea selection as they offer PG Tips Earl Grey and Breakfast Tea.

A few years ago they used to serve Twinings until they changed to PG Tips.
If you have an IKEA family card, the teas are free.

The best Temaki Sushi hand rolls

As I was in Tuen Mun for a photoshoot, I got some recommendations for food.
My friend recommended me this Temaki Sushi hand roll joint at Waldorf Shopping arcade.

I didn't have any expectations because hand rolls are just cold clumped sushi rice and the only exciting part is the first few bites because all the ingredients are on the top.
Secondly I find it messy eating hand rolls because the toppings and rice go everywhere after taking a bite.

Anyway, after the photo shoot I decided to check it out as I was really hungry and could do with some carbs.

It was a small joint beneath the busy mall yet they had so many hand rolls to choose from that it was hard for me to decide, so in the end I picked the hot items.
The interesting thing was that I saw a grandpa eating a roll so it must be good because elderly Chinese do not usually eat sushi as they consider it rather modern.

++++++++
[grilled flounder fish hand roll]
Began with the flame grilled flounder fish which was a good start because the rice was at room temperature and it wasn't clumped together but loosely held together yet firm.

It was wrapped in paper so it was easy to eat AND I did not make a mess and the fish didn't drop out, the seaweed was fresh and crisp that it lets you get a clean bite without needing to tug it.
The fish itself was fresh and the oils infused with the rice nicely that I didn't need any seasoning.

+++++++++++++++

Next I had the cheesy roll with a prawn cutlet in the middle.
It was topped with egg and cheesy sauce.

Normally I am not keen on Japanese egg because it is sweet but when you take a bite of this, all the flavours are fantastic because the sauce is tangy and then you get the warm crispy prawn in the middle and then you have the egg and cheese.

The best thing is that the frying oil was fresh so it didn't kill the roll.
++++
The next roll I had was the hand roll with uni, scallops and salmon roe, basically all my wishes in one as if I was eating a hand rolled donburi!!!

Again, all the ingredients were fresh especially my favourite popping salmon roe and in the middle it was not just solid rice, there was salmon in the middle.

+++++
As I was still hungry, I decided to get the fried soft shell crab with crab paste hand roll because the fried soft shell crab is guaranteed to be good judging by the fried prawn I had earlier since their frying oil is fresh.
When it came, you could see the how vibrant the crab was, it was bright orange and you can see the claws clearly because the coating of flour is thin.

I just loved every bite of this because the crab paste was so fresh and not fishy and the soft shell crab was light and crispy.
+++++
I am definitely coming back when the MTR is half fare again.

Norwegian salmon bun from Maxim's bakery

I don't know why but every now and then I will fall for their savoury buns knowing that I will not like it.

This time I fell for the Norwegian salmon bun.

It looked quite nice with sesame and a splodge of wasabi on top.
Again, there is something weird about the bread because the texture and taste is nothing like Western bread.

The salmon filling looked like tuna paste and it was not pink.

The taste was a bit boring because it was just like eating a tuna bun and there was no salmon taste or chunks of salmon to be seen.

A good Salmon burger at TAKE Japanese Take-away Shop

TAKE Japanese Take-away Shop (Wan Chai)

I rarely walk down this road because there are too many pedestrians on this narrow pavement and it stinks of second hand smoke and fumes from heavy traffic going past made worse by traffic jams.

Anyway, I had to stop walking for a few seconds because of some slow walkers infront of me and discovered this tiny joint.

I only noticed it because of the burgers.

I was surprised to see that it was a small sushi joint doing burgers as well.

It was helpful they had English menus but not all the items are listed.

Anyway, ordered the salmon burger for $38 and I didn't realise it came with potato wedges.

There were three different salmon burgers:
-Seared salmon burger
-Spicy Salmon sashimi burger
-Salmon sashimi burger with a bamboo sauce.
{It seems to say bamboo sauce (juk-jeung) on the poster}

I opted for the seared salmon burger.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Seared salmon burger:

The bun was really good, it was a fresh springy wheat bun with crushed oats and wheat on top.
It was much better than those lifeless plastic buns you get at other local places.

There was sliced cucumber in the burger which added to the refreshing taste but they were not sliced properly because the pieces were still attached to each other.
Beneath that, there were slices of seared salmon.
The salmon burger was amazing because the salmon was seared just right complemented by the cooling cucumber and wasabi mayonnaise.

Potato wedges:

The potato wedges were not memorable but the frying oil was fresh so the potato wedges tasted ok.

Previously I tried the salmon burger at MOS which was good but the second time I had it, the salmon was over cooked.

Utterly delicious salmon burgers

MOS Burger (Tseung Kwan O)

Walked past MOS Burger and sure these new Salmon burgers.

When I saw the product shot, the salmon patty looked like an actually slice of salmon that was cut to a burger shape so I had to try it because most salmon burgers are patties made from grounded fish.

There were two burgers, one was the salmon burger and the other was salmon rice burger.

I felt that the salmon burger was going to taste better but the rice one had a more interesting filling which looked like egg and mayonnaise.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Salmon burger:

When it came, the patty was quite thin looking like a potato patty but on the surface you could faintly see the salmon fillet patterns.

After taking a bite, it surpassed my expectations because the texture of the salmon was just like lightly seared salmon.
It was amazingly soft and moist and it was 100% real salmon.

The colour of the salmon was a delicate coral pink.

As well as the salmon, the shredded lettuce and cabbage complemented it perfectly with the thin dressing they used because it tasted similar to Western coleslaw.
The cheese was slightly salty which gave the overall burger a perfect flavouring.

Sadly, I went again and they were not consistent because the salmon was overdone and dry.

Salmon specialist as well as chicken @ 一流一海南雞外賣專門店

This shop was opened late last year.

From the outside, it looks like a small snack shop selling fish shaomai and chiuchow dumplings but when you go in, there are a few tables.

On there walls, there are so many dishes that they do.
Although this place specializes in Chicken, I felt that their Salmon dishes were much better.
This restaurant is small and looks like one of those hole in a wall restaurants, and strangely they serve Salmon dishes in a Chinese style shop.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Salmon fried rice:
As well as pieces of salmon, there was salmon skin in it which gave the fried rice a nice fishy taste.
The fried rice was well done because some of the rice were crispy.
I think the secret to this is the fish skin because it is sticky and chewy which gives the rice more depth.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Panfried salmon with spring onions and ginger puree on rice:
This tasted even better than the fried rice because the salmon came with the skin which was nice and crispy.
However I found it slightly too oily, but the ginger and spring onions complemented it nicely.
The steak was thinner than normal because they probably sliced some of the salmon off to cook other stuff, but they give you three slices to compensate that.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pork dumplings in tomato and fish soup:
The broth for this was delicious and made of salmon, it was spicy as well.
When I asked them if it was salmon broth, she was very secretive and did not want to admit they used Salmon because she said its too expensive to use Salmon, but I got the impressive she thought I was stealing her recipe!
I felt the salmon taste was stronger than the tomato.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Set with scrambled egg and salmon, macaroni and toast:
This set only costs $28 which is a bargain because you get salmon scrambled egg, although the salmon is not top quality but it was delicious, especially the egg which tasted really nice.
The presentation is not that good, but it tastes better than it looks.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Hainan style chicken with rice:
Although this was their signature dish I felt that the salmon dishes fared better.
The chicken and rice were just average.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
The beach:
The beach
The beach
The name sounds strange but in Chinese it is called "sa taan something", as well as this, they had "chung leng" chicken, bathing chicken.
Anyway, this was plain pork chop, ham and egg with curry sauce and rice and it was simple but nice.
