Mei Foo's hidden golden nuggets of treasure

If I am ever at Mei Foo I always have to stop here for some nougats.
This place is only famous to the small majority that know it but quite famous for Chinese expats because they buy boxes of nougats and cookies as souvenirs.

Hopefully I will be back soon because the nougats are addictive and I regretted not getting the chicken biscuits and the abalone biscuits.

This time I got the nougat variety pack which has all eight nougat flavours:
Original flavour, crispy chocolate, crispy coffee, crispy black sesame, almond nougat, almond and prune, ginger and almond and blueberry and hazelnut.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Original peanut

The peanut flavour was quite nice because it was crammed with lots of peanuts in it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
crispy chocolate
This one was my favourite because it is crispy and chewy and tastes just like a mini lion bar!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
crispy coffee

Not a fan of coffee so and I found it too sweet.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
crispy black sesame
Not a fan of sesame so it just tasted ok.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
almond nougat

This one was quite addictive because there were lot of crunchy almonds in it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
almond and prune

As well as the chocolate, this was also my favourite because it was very chewy and soft.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
ginger and almond
The ginger one is quite different compared to other ones because it has a fiery kick to it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
blueberry and hazelnut

This one was quite sweet but I loved the hazelnuts.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
After trying all the flavours, my favourites are the prune and the crispy chocolate.

Having a green cake at Dessert Forest

Dessert Forest (Mei Foo)
I initially planned to come here on the 15th of November in 2011 because there was a dinner in the dark event nearby.
It happened to be a Tuesday so it was closed, but the guy at the newspaper kiosk was really helpful because he spoke really good English!

Almost two years later, I am here again and its open!

Cute calender!

A nice rack of books

Cute hand drawn notice

As well as the nice interior, they support the environment and participate in upcycling.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pandan cake:
Anyway, I was mainly here for the pandan cake which is made by their Singaporean chef.

Indeed it was delicious, it was soft and fragrant, but the coloring was a bit too much compared to other pandan cakes.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Lemon and red tea jelly:

The jellies were nice but I would have liked a stronger lemon taste.
It basically tasted like Vita's lemon tea made into jelly and the texture of the jelly was very firm too with a piece of coco de nata in the middle.

Classy nougats

Door Door (Mei Foo)
As mentioned in my previous review, the nougats here are really good and the packaging and design really takes it to another level.

They have fans from Thailand who go there especially for the nougats.

I regretted that I didn't buy any on my last vist, but thanks to Garycwm for getting me these nougats.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Black sesame nougats:

I loved the packaging and fonts, especially the foil wrapper.
The bag was resealable.

There was crisp rice paper to keep it from sticking to the wrapper.

The taste of these nougats were delicious, you can see black sesame seeds in it and there was a layer of chocolate in the middle sandwiched between the delicious nougat that was not too sweet.

My moment for food at Moments.hk

Moments.hk Food Station (Mei Foo)
After my unsuccessful visit to 滄浪亭 Tsong long ting nearby I decided to go to Moments.hk Food Station 無休站 because there was still food I have not tried yet.

The shopping mall is currently undergoing rennovations hence there is a lot of drilling and dusty air about.

I think it is fates idea that I can't dine at Tsong Long Ting because when I went to their Tsuen Wan branch it was closed, then at the Mei Foo branch, they decided to temporarily stop the air con at the mall on the day way I went so Tsong Long Ting was closed.

Since my last visit, they have more choice of sauces for their noodles and they have crispy noodles as well!

I regretted not getting the noodles because I won't be in Mei Foo again.

Crispy noodles

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
I was quite impressed with their fried items because I was expecting oily food but none of them were oily because they were cooked in an AirFryer.

The items are not submerged in oil, but are laid on a metal pan and the top will occaisionally light up red.
The AirFryer looks a bit like a UFO when it is in operation.

Saw some attractive posters for macaroni cheese, chicken kiev with ham and cheese and the Shanghai pie which I got!

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Deep fried macaroni cheese:

The product shot and the real thing looks quite different but the real thing looks the same as the macaroni and cheese I had before.
The taste was much nicer because it was not that oily with soft macaroni inside.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chicken kiev with chicken and ham:

The chicken kiev was neatly held in a paper bag.
It tasted quite nice with melted cheese in the middle but the chicken that was used in this kiev was processed chicken.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Shanghai pie:

Again it looked different to the product shot which shows a puff pastry.

The pie was actually a piece of Taiwanese roti/pancake with cheese spread in the middle and heated up.

It was delicious and non oily.

A taste of Vietnam at Mei Foo

Little Vietnam (Mei Foo)
Went to Mei Foo for some Vietnamese food.

It is located in the residential area of Mei Foo, hence it is packed with local residents.

The menu was very extensive, ranging from simple noodles and rice to lovely dishes.

Heres what we had:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Caramel and ginger chicken wings:

I loved these chicken wings because the taste of ginger and caramel were a good pairing, the fieryness of the ginger was balanced by the sweetness.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Baked scallop with butter with garlic:

These scallops had a really rich buttery taste with a hint of sweetness.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Vietnamese hot and sour prawn soup:

It was not very hot, but quite a sweet tasting soup with strong hints of lemongrass and coriander.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Water prawn in fish sauce:

These prawns were huge and were complemented by the tangy sauce which was not too spicy.
The sauce was so nice I had it with the rice.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Vietnamese steamed parcels:

These were my favourite and they taste great without the sauce, because they were topped with delicious crispy garlic and spring onion.
Inside these parcels were vegetables, dried shrimp and black fungas.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Beef cubes with red rice:

The portion was big and the beef cubes were juicy and tender accompanied with chunky peppers and onions.
The rice was tangy but I felt that the tomato flavour could be stronger.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Vietnamese shrimp and pomelo salad:

The pomelo salad was really refreshing with lots of green papaya, zucchini and carrots.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Drinks:

We had Cendol ice, Tri coloured ice and Salty lemon with soda.
I had the Salty lemon with soda because I wanted something light with the meal and soda is a good drink with a salty twist from the salty lemon.

Never ending moment and choices to come @ Moments.hk Food Station

Was invited to the Dialogue in the dark dinner at Mei Foo so I checked my list to see if there was anything I had bookmarked to eat in Mei Foo.
On my list I found this shop and Dessert Forest.

Since Dessert Forest was closer to the dinner location, I went to this place first, then Dessert Forest would be my second stop before reaching the final destination.

It was residential buildings once you come out from the MTR.
There were so many stalls for food and the place was interesting, it was similar to Tsuen Wan, but it was felt like I was in Stratford, London because there were Westerners and the British type of Africans.

Anyway, after passing many stalls and residential buildings, I was just about to give up!
Then after standing there for a moment I saw pillars with their posters, so I realised the shop was nearby.
I never would have guessed it was located on the second floor.
But luckily, they had really clear instructions and in ENGLISH too that specified the exact SPIRAL staircase!!
After going up those rare spiral staircases in Hong Kong, I finally saw the shop!
There were so many choices, but I couldn’t order too much because there was dinner to come.
I really really really wanted to try the popcorn chicken, it looked really nice with the crispy coating.

In the end, I ordered the noodles that come with sauce and toppings in clear plastic bags.
I only picked one ingredient because I just wanted to try the noodles and sauce.
For the sauces there were four sauces available: seafood, teriyaki, Malaysian satay and sesame.
They also put fresh garlic on top as well.
Ingredients and sauces
Ingredients and sauces

The noodles cost me $5 because each ingredient costs $2.5 and the noodles cost $2.5, so if you were to pick three ingredients and a noodle, it would only cost you $10.

After I had started eating the noodles, I noticed they had rolled chicken with cheese, which I will order next time with the popcorn chicken! BUT I don’t know when I visit will MeiFoo again!
The noodles were delicious, and you can choose original, spinach or rice noodles.
The sauce was just right, it was thick and clung to the noodles, and without it the crushed garlic and ingredients would not have come together.
There were many ingredients to choose from, but I just chose the shredded abalone.
Choices and choices
Choices and choices

The portion size was quite reasonable too.
These noodles used to be quite popular, but no doubt this place was better and cleaner than the place I tried before.

Overall MF was quite a nice place, tried to go to Dessert Forest to get some Pandan cake but it was Tuesday that day, so it was closed, and I was really surprised because the guy at the newspaper stand spoke English really well!~
