[Review] Lo's Noodle Factory - Cheap Rice Rolls in a dodgy alley

As I was in London, someone asked me to get some rice rolls.
The message directed me to this dodgy alley so I thought the person was mucking me about as it looked dark and dirty.

Entered a shop which looked like a seafood shop and asked for rice rolls and the guy told me it was the shop next door so it appears I was in the right direction.
Finally found the shop with a narrow corridor that only fits one person so once you bought your stuff anyone queuing would have to give way.

To be honest, the rice rolls were really good as the texture was firm with a chew and much better than the crap in Hong Kong which is sweet by default without any sauces.

They also had buns which I didn't like much as they were hard to swallow.

Good dough stick rice rolls at Wonton Master

I was a bit reluctant to dine here because it is located in Kwun Tong but since it is recommended by Michelin I decided to give it a go.

The stir fried beef flat noodles are meant to be good but it was not my cup of tea so here was what I tried:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Cucumber soymilk:

This was refreshing and it was blended with fresh cucumber so it was not sweetened.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Wonton noodles:

I am not keen on this but I liked the mini portion and the size of the springy wontons.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Spinach and beancurd:

The beancurd was soft and tasty with young spinach leaves beneath it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
dough stick rolls:

Although this place is famous for the beef noodles and wonton noodles, I like this dish the most because it was not oily and the crueller sticks in the middle were crispy and chewy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Stir fried rice rolls in XO sauce:

Too spicy
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
I will probably come back for the dough stick rolls and congee which I forgot to take a picture of.

Stopped by for some rice rolls at Snack Express

This branch is better than the TKO branch because they have a small table for you to stand there and eat.
The staff there are consistently cocky as the other branches.

Rice rolls:

There was not much soy sauce so asked for some more and it got flooded with sauce.

Luckily the soy sauce was not too salty but it made the ricerolls difficult to eat because the sauce made the ricerolls unravel.

Cute NY style food truck spotted at Festival Walk

When I first heard of this joint I wasn't sure what it was because the name The Lobintan sounded strange.

After seeing photos from fellow foodies, I realized it was a food truck.

The truck is brightly coloured in black and yellow which reminds me of New York and the food boxes are the same style as the US Chinese takeaway boxes with the cute handle.
It was a cold day so I had the mock sharks fin soup and fried fish shaomai.
The fish shaoai was really impressive because they were fried with an airfryer which makes them healthy as only a drop of oil is needed.
The Shaomai was really crispy and delicious.

After that, had the mock sharks fin soup which was really nice especially with the vinegar, white pepper and sesame oil.
The black fungus and tofu skin were really filling.
This is a really good joint for street snacks in a clean and air conditioned environment served in clean dishes with a neat seating area.

Rice rolls at 金山粥店

This place is famous for rice rolls so decided to try it.
On my way there, I could smell it a mile away because the oil smell was sickening and the meat didn't smell fresh.

Since I was already there, I decided to try it.

The rice rolls are made at the front of the shop with the rice roll mixture stored in the red bucket.

There was a dine in area too.

They open at 6 in the morning which is pretty early, but then the elderly people in Sai Kung normally get up at 5am!!

Rice rolls with chives and dried shrimp:

Basically I found them too soft.
The taste was ok but it wasn't delicious that I had to make a special trip into SK for them.
It was slightly different to the rice rolls in the city because it had sesame and pork bits in the rice rolls as well.

Egg rice rolls

新華粥品 (Wan Chai)
To this date, I still feel these dough stick rice rolls are the best and this is probably my 4th-5th visit because the rice rolls are cheap and quick.

I ended up having two plates because I loved the freshness of the dough sticks in the middle, they were oil free, crispy with a soft centre.

First plate:

Second plate:

Rice rolls with egg:

At first it tasted really nice but it got a bit heavy after eating a few pieces.
It tasted better with soy sauce.

Nice rice rolls with fried dough sticks

新華粥品 (Wan Chai)

I did not realise this was a new shop.
Vaguely in my mind, there was a congee shop in this area and they had interesting things such as sweetcorn and egg in the ricerolls according to IVYCWK’s review which was why I wanted to try it.
When I got there, they did not have it on the menu so I thought they stopped it.

Anyway, I tried the rice rolls and there were two types, one was freshly made to order and the others were fresh but made some time ago.
The freshly made ones were more expensive and the other ones such as BBQ pork rice rolls were also cheap at $13 per dish.
The congee also is also freshly cooked!

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Rice rolls with dough sticks:

The big plate of rice rolls were extremely cheap, they were only $10 and if you order it with a meal it only costs $6.
The fried dough inside WAS EXTREMELY delicious.
I was not sure if I was lucky the oil was fresh or whether it will be this good next time.
The fried dough inside was soft and the centre of it was clearly white indicating fresh oil and that it was not fried twice.
The rice roll wrap was nice and thin and the it was so delicious you could taste the natrual dough stick taste which is usually covered by the oil taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Freshly made rice rolls with dried shrimp and spring onions:

The rice roll sheets were nice and thin, and the spring onions on top were sliced finely and fresh because they were still green and not dehydrated.
