[勝面] Sheng Mian from TW branches to HK

It seems that Sheng Mian is from Taiwan according to the media but photos of the food look very different.
The menu offers noodles and the usual Taiwanese fare.

I was curious of the Spicy noodles because photos showed that it looked like Laksa and Pork broth with Spicy oil over it so I ordered this item.
For noodles you get a choice of knife cut noodles, white noodles etc.
When it came, it looked like the other photos that people had here.

The beef slices were similar to the ones you get in Pho noodles, ie semi raw. You could see that some of the beef was visually dry without trying.
Although the beef could have been better the noodles were fantastic, it was more like Japanese ramen!

Also had plain rice with spicy tofu.
The rice was hard and clumped together that you could use chopsticks to pick up the rice in the bowl.

The star of the show was surprisingly the Taiwanese roti which fellow foodies said were too sweet.
Inside it was taro mash, thin layer of fried egg and sticky mochi.
As the taro mash was quite sweet, I scraped some away and the whole thing was so damn good because the roti tasted like mille feuille pastry filled with sticky mochi.

Unfortunately, the tea would have been good but it was sweetened. Most cold brews are not sweetened but for some bizarre reason they were sweetened here which I didn't expect or perhaps its MK!

Finished with the Grass Jelly dessert which was instaworthy but unfortunately it was canned grass jelly and you can even see the edge of the can.

Overall the Taiwanese roti was the best.

Sorrowful Noodles and GoodBBQ at Hofex 2019

There is so much going on at the Taiwanese section of Hofex.
Mandarin is not my strong point so I only managed to talk to a few booths!!!

To my surprise, I spotted GoodBBQ at the Shuangrenhsu booth [3E-305] !!
Shuangrenhsu is like the Chanel of Taiwanese noodles so the marriage of GoodBBQ, the Tiffany of Hong Kong's siumei results in delicious bowl of Sorrowful noodles (暗然銷魂麵).
Originally Sorrowful Rice ( 黯然銷魂飯) is a dish that came from the Stephen Chow's God of Cookery Film where it is a bowl of rice with egg and charsiu on top.

Everything is about egg porn these days, so the poached egg yolk mixed into the famous noodles were simply delicious accompanied by the chunky pieces of charsiu!

Both GoodBBQ and Shuangrehsu do ready to eat vacuum sealed products.
You will find a delectable home cooking charsiu kit which uses the same formula their bbq pork sold at their restaurants.
All you do is marinate the pork with it and then roast it at the comfort of your own home.
Tescos in UK should stock them soon so we shall see these products world wide at other Tesco branches!

Other interesting finds at the Taiwanese section were taro scented rice and colourful noodles.

[Tristar Kitchen] twinkling bright in Shatin

Fell in love with Tristar when they first opened in CWB so I decided to try this one instead of the new branch at Wanchai because the menu offers more here!!

Since I travelled all the way to Shatin, I decided to try the Taiwanese steamed buns and Shaved ice as well as the noodles!
On the menu, they offer you a choice of three different noodles including thick and thin because some people can be quite particular about them.
Just like the celebrity kiki noodles, they have thin and thick.

For noodles, ordered two alcoholic ones: hua diao wine and the Kavalan Single Malt Noodles.

The Kavalan Single Malt Noodles were a shock as I didn't realize there would be flames!!

First they torch the beef slices so that they are cooked then they add some malt and flambee the noodles.

Compared to the standard beef noodles, the whisky gives it a sophisticated aroma and malty taste to the broth and the malt that they sprinkle on top enhances the taste even more.

As for the [hua diao wine beef noodles], the broth was on the sweet side and I chose the thin noodles so that it would absorb the broth.

For snacks, had the Taiwanese steamed buns which was filled with soft gelatinous beef and preserved vegetables.
The buns were soft and pillowy with satisfying beef in the middle drizzled with sweet gravy.

For dessert, finished with the shaved ice.

I didn't realize it would be that big and you also get extra condensed milk and brown sugar syrup on the side which I didn't use as it was sweet enough.

There are eight toppings to choose from but this was confusing as not all are shown at the counter and the menu doesn't clearly specify which 8 to choose from.

The shaved ice was surprisingly good because the brown sugar syrup that was already on there tasted nice and when it got slushier, the taste was refreshing.
I appreciate the quality brown sugar syrup they used as it wasn't cloyingly sweet and addictive. Overall, it was worth my time checking it out.

Improvements: English descriptions would be helpful on the Menu!
DISCLAIMER: I haven't been to Taiwan before so I am only commenting on the taste.

A decent bowl of Taiwanese Beef noodles

There are lots of Taiwanese beef noodles in Hong Kong but not many taste good.
To me a good bowl of Taiwanese beef noodles is a combination of a strong beef broth, pickles, beef and most importantly the noodles.
Tristar is opened by a local celeb and here Taiwanese husband so you might catch other celebs dining here.

Anyway, I tried two noodles, the beef noodles and the noodles in spicy sauce.

The beef noodles were satisfying because the broth was strong and the beef was tasty. The broth was slightly spicy which made it more appetizing.

The tossed noodles were good because each strand was evenly flavoured by the spicy sauce.

Finished with the chocolate drink with extra herbal jelly which had a lovely thick milk foam cap to it.

I didn't try the pearls but they seem worth trying because the size is relatively smaller than the other ones in HK.

Kiki noodles by celebrity star ShuQi

As well as a restaurant foodie, I am addicted to cup noodles and instant noodles.
Came across these noodles by Taiwanese celebrity star ShuQi which are noodles tossed in sauce.
There are two flavours: Sichuan noodles or Scallion noodles.

Tried both and they were fantastic because you get quality noodles that are served in restaurants and not unhealthy typical instant noodles.

They are too easy to cook, boil until the desired softness and toss the noodles with the sauce provided and they are ready to eat.

Personally I preferred the scallion but the Sichuan one is quite spicy yet fragrant.
It is good how the chili seasoning is in a separate sachet.

These noodles are available at:
