Stargazy pie at The Barley Mow by Cubitt House

It's National pie week so I am truly excited because pies get justice.
There's East London style served with mash and liquor or just pie with mash and gravy.
I've have been meaning to try the Stargazy pie which is rare these days.
A Stargazy pie is made with sardines, eggs and potatoes with sardine heads poking out the top edges of the pie as if they were gazing at stars.
What brought me to the Cubitt House chain was their Stargazy pie launched for pie week which I feel uncomfortable addressing as a Stargazy pie because the ingredients are different.
I suppose it makes sense for Cubitt House to use langoustines as this is one of their offerings on the menu.
But anyway, I still had to try it even though it is filled with chicken and Dublin prawn for the sake of it.
I was definitely the first person to order this as they staff were literally just given briefings about it.
£25 is a bit expensive but it delivered, the pie, mash and gravy were all good but just not the name.
Starting from the garlic mash, it was green with finely chopped grassy green spring onions and it was tasty and well balanced in terms of flavour, garlic and butter whilst having a potato taste.
Next the star of the show, the pie, although the pastry was quite thick and heavy, the chicken and Dublin Bay prawn were good and the pastry was crisp and soft on the inside and somehow it felt like there was some suet in it.
Even though, the pastry was quite thick for a small pie, there was quite a lot of chunky chicken and what you would expect from a langoustine so not much cavity in the pie.
The chicken filling was flavourful and it didn't really need the gravy but having the gravy took it to another level as it tasted like a lobster bisque gravy with some alcohol.
So overall, although it was pricey, all the elements didn't let you down.

As well as the fantastic pie, their restaurant menu upstairs is also worth checking out with lamb crumpets with anchovy mayo, pie mash with parsley sauce, deep fried oysters etc.
I also spotted some white strawberries which happened to be pickled and served with cheese.
The staff really made my day and let me try one.
The pickled strawberry taste was quite different to how I imagined it to be, it was not that sharp but sweet and sour like pickled plum.

Moores Pie Mash - Pie mash and salt beef bagel review

With most pie mash shops you will just find pies, mash, jellied eels and liquor but at Moores Pie Mash they have my favourite salt beef bagel from East London so you can get the best of both worlds here with a salt beef bagel and a satisfying pie mash.
It can be a hard decision because they are both filling and very different.
The common thing with pie mash and eels are that they both taste delicious with lashing of chilli vinegar and some salt and white pepper.

I had to come here twice, once for the bagel and the second time for the pie mash.

To be honest, there is nothing as delicious as eating it piping hot at the restaurant.
Due to the current situation, it was take out only but it was advantageous for the pie mash because the liquor was served separate.
I think you probably get more liquor than you usually do.
Each element of the pie mash was delicious, the beef in the pie was succulent and moist.
Adding chili vinegar to it made it even more appetizing.
The liquor was also the star of the show because it was not bland like other places.

Moving on to the salt beef bagel, the beef was just as good as the two famous ones.
The beef was reddish in the middle just how it should be.
Overall, this place is definitely recommended and the decor inside is nice.

Manzes Pie And Mash Shop Sutton review

M.Manze is a must visit for pie mash!
There are three branches of Manzes but since Peckham was far away and there are too many distractions in London so I went to Sutton.
As a foodie I am trying to dine at all the pie and mash shops in London because I just love pie and mash.

Pie and mash originates from East London where they serve Pie, mash and eel.
On this visit, I just had the pie mash so next time I shall return for the jellied eels because I am addicted to the jelly which is heaven when you put lashings of vinegar and pepper on it.

As I was late due to the traffic I only had a pie and liquor to be quick.
Normally I have the regular beef pie but since they had the vegan soya mince version I decided to have that instead because not all pie mash shops have a vegetarian version.

Adding salt, white pepper and chili vinegar makes the pie really moreish because it makes the pastry more flavourful.
The white pepper really takes it to the next level when it is mixed with the liquor and vinegar.
Although the soya mince doesn't have much flavour but once you add the condiments everything goes together perfectly.
I am so glad that pie mash is one of the things that is traditionally served with white pepper because chefs don't use white pepper these days, they all use black pepper which is so different.
Black pepper is nice but white pepper shouldn't be forgotten just like delicious pie mash.
The only thing I didn't like were the plants with deliveroo on it because it just ruined the traditional appearance of Manze.
I understand they deliver for them but perhaps they are too modern and just don't look good together.
