Gulliver's journey experience in Hong Kong

I have always wanted to try this place because I liked the name of the shop which comes from Gulliver's travels.

However its location is quite far from the city and there is now another shop located at Mikiki.

Although with the convenience of modern travel today, I was lazy to travel here compared with Gulliver's adventurous travels to various cities in the novel.

Anyway, when I got here, I was greeted with the B and L logo composed of the illustrations of the ice-creams that they sell.
It shows giant icecreams (Brobdingnag) and dwarf icecreams (Lilliput) arranged like a compass which correlates to travelling and matches the Gulliver theme with waves beneath the name of the shop as if it were a ship.

From the reviews there is taro ice-cream, so I ordered that but it was not available that day so I had to order something else.
The available flavours are listed on the board on the right which is quite confusing because all the flavours are listed there.
It turns out that the available flavours have an icecream magnet stuck to it which I thought was part of the design.
Anyway quite alot of the flavours I wanted to try were not available such as taro and white chocolate, so I just got the tutti frutti.

I saw these colourful tiny cups which have coloured liquid inside that freeze in the freezer so that when you take them out you can pour alchohol shots in there to chill it.

The colour cups were tiny so I ordered it thinking there would not be much ice-cream, but the portion was quite big.
These cups can be taken home and it was thoughtful of them to give me a plastic bag to carry the dirty cup home.

As well as ice-cream they sell ice-cream for space (space foods), ice lollies and mini ice-cream flowers which come in a box with small pieces of ice-cream shaped flowers in it.

When the Princess meets Queens Road East

Previously walked past Princess in Central but never went in.

Now there is finally a Princess at Wan Chai and located on Queen's Road which I saw late last year but the cakes looked really heavy so I didn’t try them.

Recently when I walked past I saw the mini crown cake so I got it.

The cake was packed in a really nice box that looks like a handbag with a ribbon as the handle.

When I opened the box I found the ball from the top of the crown had fallen off which could not have been caused by carrying it back because the edges of the box could not touch the top centre of the cake but only the sides of the cake.

Anyway, I was slightly disappointed because the edges of the box got chocolate on it, and it is such a waste of a lovely box.
It would be great if they had a mini box to put the cake in and then into the lovely elegant box so that it keeps it clean and easier to carry.

Dark Crown - Chocolate and earl grey tea
The chocolate on the outside is made of thick mousse and not solid chocolate as it looks.
Surprisingly the sweetness is just right and the earl grey filling can be seen inside the cake.
Although the earl grey was strong I would have preferred it to be stronger to match the name Dark crown.

As well as their cakes I want to try their savory cakes such as Champagne caviar, Foie Gras, White Truffle and Savoury cookies which I hope taste 100% savoury and not savoury and sweet.
Another interesting product I want to try is the Pure egg white crisps!!

A dissection and anatomy of a chinese cream cake

To be honest I am not a fan of Chinese cakes.

But this cake in particular is the typical cake for any occaision in Hong Kong and overseas where there is a China Town.

Basically it has two sponge layers which are sweet, soft and taste very eggy.
It has that typical yellow colour with a slight twinge of orange in it.
In between the sponge it is filled with cream mixed with tinned syrupy fruits such as pineapple, grapes and peaches.
The the top layer and the rest of the cake is plastered with this cream again, and the top decorated with slices of mangoes, blueberries, strawberries.

There is too much cream in proportion to the cake, and the cream tastes weird to be honest.

But for those who are locals or expats living overseas this is the cake for them.

Brown sugar mantou by Taipan Bread & Cakes

A Mantou is a Chinese steamed bun/bread from China. They are white with no filling in the middle.
Sometimes they are eaten steamed or fried and dipped with condensed milk.

I was attracted by the packaging so I brought a bag to try.

It did not taste like a real Mantou, but its shape was made like a Mantou.
It was sweet flavoured bread with some brown sugar glazed on the surface.

Great work Amigo

I was attracted to the Taco truck ever since I saw photos of it, in general the comments on the food were good, so even more a bonus.

The Mexican food that I had before was Chili con carne and food from Agave, both were good and this place is conveniently located near the MTR so I decided to give it a visit.
Yo Bago is also in Quarry Bay, but you have to walk slightly further, so its still on my visit list.

Anyway, weather conditions that day were not that good, it was raining and slightly windy, which made it a bit difficult for finger food despite we were under a shelter already. But more preferable to eat there now than in the scorching summer. Although if it was hotter and there were people nearby playing the guitar it would probably feel like Mexico.

The décor was really good, like the taco trucks in the US, there was a Mexican hat and a colourful paper horse on the ceiling.

Ordered two tacos, grilled fish and the fried fish one, both with flour wraps, chicken sopes, and a burrito with beef.
All of them came with chili sauce except the Sope, which came with tomato sauce.
For drinks, ordered the horchata.

The tacos were really good, the wrap was thin and chewy, I preferred it slightly tougher so it wouldn’t break when I ate it. The grilled fish was moist compared to the fried fish, however I liked the fried fish more, it was nicely fried, and the oil was fresh, and there was some crunch to it like light tempura.

The chili sauce they provided was excellent, not the typical chili sauce you find in hong kong, but a watery one made, same as this excellent chili sauce I had at PFC in UK.
As well as chili, there was lemon, so the taste was tangy and hot.

The chicken sope was a bit different to what I was expecting, because the dough was meant to be soaked in lime, but I couldn’t taste any lime at all. It was slightly messy eating it too, but still good, this came with watery tomato sauce too.

Finally the burrito was nice and filling too, and was perfected by the sauces too.

The Horchata was astonishingly good, as well as the taste, it brought back the taste of some baby food I had before. The taste was slightly starchy, with hints of wheat, and then cinnamon.

It would be great if they had more seafood such as prawns, octopus tentacles, calamari's that would go nicely with their chili and lemon.

Horchata from Mr Taco Truck in central

Finally Mr Taco Truck is in Central.

It was fun eating at the Quarry Bay branch because it looks like a Taco Truck, however space and seats are limited.

At this branch it is much more spacious and there are many tables.

It has improved since then, because you can buy sauces and food packs to take home.

I came by especially for the Horchata.

The first time I tried Horchata was at Quarry Bay, the taste of Horchata brought back memories of baby food.

However this time the drink tasted too sweet and it was not as powdery as the first time.

But anyway I'll be back for the food.
