In search for Xi'an food

有緣小敍 (Jordan)

On my last trip to Jordan I planned to dine at this place but could not find it because it was actually located on Saigon Street and behind the street sign that saids Saigon Street too.

Waited a while before I could get a seat and when I sat down I looked at the picture menu and the English menu to see what to order.

Some pictures were really familiar because they were taken from some famous bloggers ie kikisheep, ilovedisney and taiwanwalker!

The pictures even had the links on the bottom too!

I really wanted to order the bread with meat but it was sold out.

There were interesting historical figures on the table.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried red beancurd chicken wings:

The chicken wings were delicious and deep fried so that the chicken skin was crispy.
The red beancurd was quite salty after it had been fried.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Wide strip noodles with oil and fennel dumplings:

The noodles were quite nice but the oil was a bit rancid which spolt it.

However the dumplings were the best I have tried, there was so much fennel and less on the meat.
See how green it was.
If the dumpling wrap was thinner it would have been perfect.

The noodles were topped with deep fried greens which reminded me of seaweed sold in British takeaways.

Ribs and noodles:

I did not like the noodles but the ribs were delicious and the meat was soft and tender.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried dumplings filled with black sesame paste:

There were two flavours for the fried dumplings, peanut or sesame so I chose black sesame.
It was quite funny when they brought it out because they apologised that they were not meant to look like "tsee-goo-ding" ie the male reproductive organ of a child!
Apart from the appearance they tasted quite nice but the glutinous exterior was slightly dry.

Lovely modernized rickshaw noodles - NOT!

MinMix 1950 (Tseung Kwan O)

Previously tried this at Hung Hom and now they have opened in Metro City and Tuen Mun.

I was quite surprised the locals were quite ready for the new ordering system. A lot of people managed to order without a problem, but the only flaw was payment by octopus because not everyone has much credit on their cards.

There are round tables where the ordering panel swivels 180 degrees.

Anyway, I dined at this place because it is simple and has ENGLISH!

This time I decided to try the LAKSA.
The choice of noodles were only VERMICELLI or FRIED NOODLES for the LAKSA!.

I chose VERMICELLI because the English definition of Vermicelli is rice noodles ie (maai fun 米粉).
When it came it was Mai Sin (Cantonese) / Mixian ( Mandarin) 米線.
Mixian is guoqiao mixian 過橋米線/雲南米線 aka (Crossing the bridge noodles).

Anyway, I queried why it was not vermicelli and I could hear the people in the kitchen thinking it was my mistake.
If they have an issue, they should not cower in the kitchen and speak to me directly.

In the end, I was given a mix of vermicelli and Mixian for my laksa.

After I finished the noodles, I took a look at their Chinese version of the interface and it appears that the ENGLISH and CHINESE do not match for Vermicelli.

They have labelled the English wrongly.

So I looked at their list of noodles and they have labelled the Mixian as Vermicelli (bottom left picture) and Vermicelli as Rice noodles (top left first picture).

Vermicelli is also called rice noodles as well.

See the English and Chinese choices for the Laksa noodles:
It is implying that Vermicelli = 雲南米線 which is not!!

They should label it thick rice vermicelli then it would be not be misleading, the same as angel hair and normal pasta/spaghetti.
I was expecting Vermicelli because I ordered through the ENGLISH version.
If you wiki Vermicelli, you will not get pictures of Mixian.

As well as that, there was another translation error.

In English it saids Pork's bladder, in Chinese it means Stomach!

Interesting translation: bladder or stomach

Swivel design:
It does not rotate 360 degrees!
There are chopsticks on one side.

The ordering panel is on the other side

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Stingy with the broth:

stingy with the broth
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Laksa:
The laksa was bland, it was nice spicy, the tofu puffs were extremely salty.

Black sugar and malt lollipops

華記永昌號名酒食品 (Causeway Bay)

I have always wanted to get Taiwanese food from here but did not know where it was.

Finally stumbled across it after dining at Keung Kee's for glutinous rice.

The items I wanted to buy such as the frozen cake was not there so I ended up getting these lollipops because they looked interesting.

It was a preserved plum embedded in candy, there was black sugar or malt and I couldn't decide so got both.

It looks like a fossilized preserved prune!!

The black sugar one tasted sugary and the malt one was my favourite because the taste was less sweet.
The preserved prune was salty and sour.

I am not sure if this is a traditional sweet, but it is interesting having a preserved prune with candy!

Chicken at Hong Kong Chicken King in Sai Kung!

香港雞皇 (Sai Kung)

Went to this restaurant because they seem to be famous for chicken.

There are not many reviews on this place but it looks like an old restaurant and I wonder how long it has been in Sai Kung.

There are three different types of chicken:Hainan style chicken
Fragrant salt chicken
Spicy chicken

This restaurant is always packed with people having chicken pots.

I have never tried a chicken pot so I don't know how that works.

Anyway, I tried the chicken set and I was still hungry so ordered the spicy chicken for takeout.

The staff here were polite and patient which is unusual for Chinese restaurants in SK.

The chicken tasted nice because I had the leg part, but the soup was too salty.

For the takeaway, it was good that she put the sauce separately.

The only disadvantage dining there is that you can smell second hand smoke.

Savoury selection and bread pudding at Amico Italian

Amico Italian Wine Bar & Restaurant (Tsim Sha Tsui)

Thanks to EA communications for inviting me to this event to try Dreyer's D collections new TIRAMISU icecream.

As well as the icecreams, there was also food provided by Amico Italian Wine Bar & Restaurant.

Before I tried the icecreams, I had some savoury appetizers first.

The aubergines in tomato sauce were nice and the celery tossed in herbs.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Bread pudding:

The bread pudding provided by Amico was really nice and the bread was crispy.

apple cake @ breadtalk

☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Apple cake:

The apple cake was really dense and it was too sweet.
There was lots of cinnamon in it and the apples on top were thinly sliced.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Berry Rhapsody @ Breadtalk

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Berry rhapsody:

The berry rhapsody cake was quite nice, it was berry mousse in between layers of chocolate sponge.
The sweetness was just right.
