Great modern cha chann teng food

Hong Kong chaa chan teng food either clicks with me or it doesn't, there is no in between because either I like or I don't like it.

In this case, I found the food enjoyable because the savory dishes don't taste sweet and would come back if the location wasn't so inconvenient.

*** Must try

***Iced Pineapple:

I was surprised there was a drink that I could drink because at most cha chann tengs there are not much options for expats because it is mainly Hong Kong style milk tea and syrupy tasting drinks.
The iced pineapple was really nice because it was pineapple juice with icecubes made of frozen canned pineapples.
It was lovely and refreshing and not the usual syrupy sweet drinks you get.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chicken wings in Swiss sauce:

Not my favourite but these were better than other places because other places just taste sweet.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Prawns on toast:

These were different to the ones on toast because it was minced prawns on baguette slices.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pigeon:

They were not bad but I found them difficult to eat because I find it hard dealing with meat on bones.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Spicy chicken wings:

These were similar to the chicken wings above but had a really spicy tone to it.
I preferred them because the spicy tone and the sweetness tasted good together.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
***Flat noodles with beef:

Again, the beef was good because I loved the gravy which was not sweet and tasted like oyster sauce.
The fried noodles beneath it were not oily and had delicious pieces of egg.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Bread box:

I was surprised by this because the sauce was nice and savoury.
The bread box can feed a whole table because beneath the pork chop, there was fried rice as well.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
***Curry bread box:

curry, potato, cheese, sauce rice and bread.
This was my favourite because I love curry with rice AND bread and it had BOTH.
It also had cheese too which was a bonus.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Instant noodles tossed in spring onion ginger oil with pork chop:

The noodles were tasty with the generous spring onion and ginger oil sauce.
You can choose from pork chops or chicken wings to go with the noodles.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Hainan style chicken:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Hong Kong style taste with chocolate sauce:

This was the usual toast dipped in egg and pan fried.
As you can see the toast was cut into big chunky pieces!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
***Hong Kong style toast with kaya spread:

This was delicious and syrup was served separate which was good.
Frankly it does not need syrup because it has delicious sweet kaya spread in the middle and it is coated with fragrant desiccated coconut.

Better luck this time

Chinese food again!!!

The food was acceptable hence it deserves to be written up.
Four out of the ten dishes were ok so I am just going to write about these dishes.

It is quite good that they show you your fish before they steam it.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Roast pork:

Each piece was uniformly sliced with an even fat and meat distribution.
It was crispy with a nice salty skin which gives it a good taste that roast pork should have.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Hainan style chicken:

The chicken was not skinny or too fat which was good and the chicken breast was moist and tender.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Roast suckling pig:

This was my favourite because the little pig was lean, and the skin was crispy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Vegetable soup:

The amount of vegetables in the bowl was nice and generous and the colour of it was green and luscious.
The leaves were tender and soft with a hint of bitterness.

Juicy grilled pork meat at Cafe y Taberna

Came here with some non foodie friends who picked this place.

It was interesting because I was too lazy to choose from the menu so I let them decide and they ended up going on Openrice to see what was good so we ordered grilled pork neck, satays and grilled squid.

These three items were actually quite nice but the pad thai was too sweet for my liking.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled pork neck:

This was nice and juicy which was meaty and not fatty.
The portion was nice and big with lots of slices.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled satays:

There was chicken, beef and pork.
My favourite was the chicken which was chicken breast meat.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled squid:

The squid was nice and springy complemented by their spicy sauce.

Caught by the confusing Ad

Walked past one evening and saw this poster!
It was rather confusing because it seems to imply all you can eat but it is not all you can eat.

As I was a fan of their crab congee I didn't mind going back again for it.

When I went in, I asked them about the confusing promotion and they said it was a GIMMICK because they are located on 127 Wing Lok Street, so they simply did a special offer for the congee at $1+27 ie the congee costs $28 only!!!

Although it was not all you can eat, $28 was a bargain because it normally costs around $5X.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Crab congee:
I had a better experience this time because it was served in a ceramic bowl with a proper metal spoon.
The quality was better too and you could see how much crab was in it because the colour was lovely and vivid.

Not to mention, the taste was amazing, rich in crab essence flavoured by the saltiness of the crab roe with lots of crabmeat in it.
As well as the crab, the freshness of the spring onion and the congee tasted great together.

I wish this promotion would last forever.

A delicious bacon sarnie from Burger Deli

Went there on a weekend so had to get there early before the damn people flock into sai kung.
As soon as I got my feed, I scrammed the hell out of there.

This place is going to be popular and busy on the weekends if they extend their opening hours.

Wanted to try their breakfasts but all the seats were occupied so got a bacon sarnie.

These people know what they are doing because they served the bacon sarnie in a sandwich with HP sauce.

The English menu was Chinglish free with 99% Western items except one Asian snack which was the prawn toast.

At the shop, they also sold cakes, expat confectionary, teas and drinks.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Bacon sarnie:
The sarnie was nicely toasted, lightly buttered and the saltiness of the bacon was just right complimented by the fruity brown sauce.

Hope to visit again on a rainy day so there won't be many people and it will be easier to get a seat and try more stuff.

Great chicken to feed hot chicks

Saw this new chicken shop listed on OpenRice so had to check it out because I love chicken and the name sounded Western.
The location was rather odd because there are not many Western restaurants in North Point.
That day I had two restaurants in mind, if this place didn't look good I was going to try Camden Town nearby, the Fish and Chip shop from Sai Kung!!!!

When I got there, the logo and colour theme reminded me of JoJo Indian Cuisine restaurant.

They serve roast chicken, brunches with a great choice of drinks.

The restaurant was casual with smiley chairs.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Quarter roast chicken:

I tried the roast chicken which comes with a choice of lemon sauce, BBQ sauce or Bacon red wine jus.
As I was greedy I asked for lemon sauce and the bbq sauce.
When the chicken arrived, it was on a sizzling metal plate which was quite different to what I was expecting because I was expecting it on a plate.
The chicken was juicy and soft with lots of herbs rubbed on it but you couldn't really taste the herbs.
The sauces came in separate bowls.

Personally I liked the bbq sauce because it was tangy and the taste was quite similar to ketchup with some rosemary in it while the lemon sauce had a nice zesty tone but I did not like the coconutty taste in it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

This is definitely a great place for expats to dine.
