Northern Italian delights at Assaggio Trattoria Italiana

It's been a while since my last visit and the Chef has changed.

It is now headed by Francesco Gava who specializes in Northern Italian cuisine.
From the colourful pastas at the kitchen you can tell he is very creative and artistic with these flower shaped pastas, candy shaped pastas which are coloured by beetroot and squid ink.

The menu has improved with each section listed clearly.

Here was what we had:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Gnocco Fritto, Pecorino Cheese Biscuit:

To start off had these great Italian starters, the precorino cheese biscuit was crispy with tasty cheese in the middle which are simply addictive.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Cold Cuts Platter:

Next we had the cold cuts which comprised of a good selection of proscuitto crudo, coppa, mortadella, soppressata venata, porchetta, salame di napoli, speck, bresaola and salame felino.
The mortadella and crudo were my favourite.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
VITELLO TONNATO:
Roasted Beef, Tuna Sauce

This is a well-known Italian cold appetizer, sliced veal covered with a creamy, mayonnaise-like sauce that has been flavored with tuna.
The tuna sauce was so velvety and creamy but you could still taste the fine tuna fibres in it.
The veal was really tender and melted in your mouth along with the tuna sauce, I would have thought I was just eating Tuna if I was blindfolded. An interesting pairing of fish and red meat, but saying that tuna is darker than most fishes.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
INSALATA DI MARE:
Seafood Salad

The seafood salad was refreshingly simple because it was seafood and salad drizzled with olive oil. There was more seafood than salad and the octopus was the best.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
CREMA DI ZUCCA E FORMAGGIO DI CAPRA:
Pumpkin Soup & Goat Cheese

The highlight of this soup was that they did not use thickeners, but they put Italian rice in it which is similar to congee to thicken it up, however these were filtered away because the locals are not quite ready for risotto style soup yet.
It was beautifully presented with pumpkins seeds, goats cheese and beetroot soaked Italian rice to give it a colourful contrast.
The soup had a rich sweet pumpkin taste infused with a thick milky rice flavour.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
RAVIOLI AL MERLUZZO:
Homemade Cod Fish Ravioli

I love ravioli and these were filled with mashed cod fish which was delicious.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
TAGLIATELLE AI FUNGHI:
Homemade Tagliatelle, Fresh Mushrooms & Parmesan Cream

The tagliatelle is made with more egg yolks than the standard pasta which makes them extremely chewier with firmness.
It was tossed in creamy sauce which hung to it well.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
RISOTTO PORRI E SALSICCIA:
Italian Sausage & Braised Leek Risotto

The risotto was flavourful because there were so much crisp leeks in it that made it sweet and the Italian sausage was a double treat because it was mixed in the risotto and garnished with crispy pieces of Italian sausage to give it that extra crunch.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
MAIALINO AL FORNO:
Roasted Suckling Pig

The roasted suckling pig was crispy as I expected, but the suckling pig meat was surprisingly soft as cotton which was like eating chicken. The meat came off the bone really easily too.
For improvements, it would be good if there was some apple or cherry jam to jazz it up.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
TREVIGANA:
Gorgonzola cheese, cotto ham, radicchio leaves, mozzarella and tomato sauce.

Gorgonzola is a gorgeous strong tasting cheese which gave every bite of pizza a nice flavour which went well with the soft cotto ham and crisp sweet radicchio leaves.
As well as the taste, it was really colourful with the purple salad leaves.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
MILLEFOGLIE ALLE MORE:
Blackberry Thousand Layer Cake

These were light layers of puff pastry with custard and blackberry sauce.
A nice contrast of crispy pastry with sweet custard and tart berry sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
BISCOTTI:
Cantucci, tegole and Paste di meliga

A nice collection of Italian biscuits that are great with coffee.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
BOUNET:

The Rum-Chocolate Pudding was strong and rich with a nutty texture.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
SEMIFREDDO AL LAMPONE:
Raspberry Parfait, Chocolate Cream & Meringue

This was simply the best, in the middle it was oozing with vibrant raspberry sauce encased in a frozen whipped raspberry parfait with sweet meringue pieces to complement it.
A wonderful raspberry experience.

Piri piri!! Frantically back for Flaming Frango

On my last visit, I couldn't get enough of piri piri chicken so I came back for more.
Their chicken is marinated for 24 hours so that the chicken is tasty.

Here was what I had.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sauces:

There are two sauces, the FLAMIN HOT (orange one) is spicy which adds a sharp spiciness to the food while the (MINT and CORIANDER) green one is cooling.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Half chicken with two sides $198:

The chicken was better than my previous visit because it wasn't so spicy and it was tender and juicy.
The side of rice was really good with the chicken because it was lightly flavoured with tumeric.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Calamari spiced with mint, coriander and piri piri:

The calamari served with piri aioli was good but the coating could be crispier.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Piri-piri chicken jam served with crusted bread $78:

The chicken jam was amazing because the texture was exactly like chicken liver pate but there is no liver in it.
It tastes so good that they could sell a chicken jam salad baguette for lunch!!
The chicken jam was velvety with an intense spiciness.
Personally I liked the bread not buttered so that I could taste the full flavours of chicken jam.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mediterranean salad $108:

A simple salad of tomatoes, cucumber, caramelized oranges, halloumi cheese, red peppers, and olives.
This was delicious because everything tasted good together especially the halloumi which gave the salad some saltiness while the sweetness came from the oranges.

Volcanic eruption!!!

Went here during the CNY for more desserts.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Lucky Mandarin:

Got this one because I have previously tried the rose garden.
It was A light and fruity yogurt ice cream made with mandarin puree and yuzu pieces, decorated with an edible leaf and twig, just like a real mandarin!
I really liked this because the I could also taste citrus peel which gave it another dimension like you were eating a real mandarin.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Volcanic dessert:
My friend ordered this because of the gimmick that it would erupt, basically they put crushed dry ice in the cavity and pour hot honey sauce which will then erupt when it gets in contact with the dry ice.

It was a rich and velvety with a strong chocolate truffle taste.

More choices at White Beard Fish n Chips

As I was going to Art Central, I stopped by for some snacks!

I was surprised to see new items on the menu and they even have paprika cocoa fish and chips and mushroom popcorn which means I have to go again to try it.

There were apple pies in the cabinet which looked like McDonalds one.

Sauces:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Oysters:

Batter was light and the oysters were huge and juicy wiht a strong taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Passion fruit tartar Sauce:

The oysters didn't really need sauce but I found some liquid filled pearls in the sauce which was interesting.
They would probably go well with the battered fish when the passionfruit liquid inside bursts to cut the grease of the battered fish.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Apple pie:

I tried it because I was curious if it was McDonald's apple pies and yes it tasted the same but the apple pie here is sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon.

Beefy warrior meal at Wasabi Warriors

Came back again to try the Warrior meal, there were lots of rolls and bites to choose from.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Crumbled chicken with avocado (left) and cooked tuna (right)

Both were tasty and fresh but I wish there was more filling and it would be good if the rice could be softer.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Soft shell crab and fresh scallop bite

The soft shell crab was tasty but again the rice was too dense.
As for the salmon bite, it was sweet glazed with Japanese mayonnaise and avocado.

Great soymilk desserts but they could taste better

Walked past and saw these soymilk desserts so went in and tried them.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mini glutinous rice dumplings in soymilk:

The soymilk was lightly sweetened and it had a reasonable soy bean taste, however the dumplings were too soft otherwise it would have been a perfect dessert.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sweet potatoes and ginger jam in soymilk:
This was also another good dessert but the sweet potatoes were too hard and starchy but it was nice it had pieces of beancurd sheets in it.

At the bottom there was ginger jam which didn't quite go well with the dessert.

I think it would taste better if there was no ginger jam and it would be great if the pieces of sweet potatoes were softer.
