Mountain yam and oysters @ 三河屋 MIKAWAYA

I have been planning to visit this place for 2 years, but Hung Hom is not a place I usually go to.

I managed to order the items I planned to eat, but the item I couldn’t find was the taros with the appearance of straw mushrooms. sad
I had the expectation they wouldn’t have as lately there haven’t been comments on it on OR.

Little squids: salted squids in miso sauce, rather chewy, took me ages to reduce it to a tiny swallowable mass! Tasted good, the last time I had it was at Wara Wara japanese casual restaurant. However the portion here is much bigger.

Fish Liver: Looked 100% like the European pate’s packaged in sausage form, I could still see the marks from the ends where they opened it. Tasted smooth and soft, and the sauce was tangy.

Pillows: Actually it was grounded sharks meat and filled with cheese. It tasted a bit like foam and looks rather like marshmallow. The last time I had it was from Issei, and you can order as much as you want there. I am sure they are all from the same supplier.

Curry Udon: The best udon I have had, usually I do not eat udon, because it does not tastes authentic, however the udon here is slippery and elastic. If the curry sauce was less spicy and salty, it would have been perfect. Originally ordered the udon in cream, but the smell of it was sickly.

Mountain Yam: Compared with other places that serve it, the colour is less translucent, and has a strong white radish taste. The consistency is VERY thick, similar to that of superthick porridge.

Oyster: These were grilled. I was surprised how tasty they were, after taking one bite, the whole table could smell it. They were fresh and juicy, and not mushy. The oyster was clean too.

Good light brekkie @ 榕樹頭咖啡館 Banyan Cafe

For a good breakfast, Flying Pan is the best no doubt, but if your in a rush, this is my ultimate choice. Although it is slighty more expensive than other breakfasts, I would rather pay more for prestige quality.

For taste, I would give it 4.5/5, because the drinks are HK style otherwise I would give it 5/5.

I ordered the "Pick your own 3 choices" with tea/coffee included.
I chose scrambled eggs, cheese, mushrooms.
The breakfast also came with buttered wheat bread (untoasted).

In addition to that I also ordered the Banana and Walnut cake.

The breakfast was perfect, the eggs were not too greasy, the mushrooms were excellent, they resembled the earthy dense european mushrooms.
The cheese was amazing too, it was real cheese off the block, not the burger cheese slices.

Finally I had my banana cake, and that was fantastic, moist and warm. Not too sweet, yet there was a strong natural banana taste.

The Best!!! If the Pumpkin cake was available I would have ordered that too.

Scampi flavoured fries @ Il bel paese

So happy to see a massive Il Bel Paese in wanchai, a store on the ground floor and then a restaurant on the first floor.

I entered the shop expecting the usual bakery, cheeses, and italians salad, then OMG I saw an array of crisps!! Walkers Salt n Vinegar, and Smiths Scampi and lemon and even Quavers, so I got them imediately, I havent had them for ages!!

If they had the Smiths Cheese pockets, it would be great, but good enough already, and they have my favourite cous cous too!!!

The price is quite reasonable too!

egg tarts @ 將軍堡 Tseung Kwan Castle Cafe

This is my favourite place for egg tarts, especially when the pastry is just right and golden brown.

Very good value at $10 for 5.

The custard filling is rather nice, it tastes of custard and vanilla, and not so much of egg.

Apart from the egg tarts, its other bakery items are good too.

Black pepper chicken burger @ 新金鐘食堂

Came here for a late afternoon tea, ordered noodles with pork skin with radish, and black peppered chicken burger.

The noodles were OK and tasted how they should, the pork skin reminded me of unshaven stubble.
Anyway the chicken burger was the best, it was much better than I expected, the chicken was thinly cut, also nicely grilled. It was a little different to what I imagined. I was expecting a round bun, but it was a long shaped bun. Also I thought there would be black peppar sauce, however it was chicken marinated with black peppar, then dressed with salad cream.

We thought the food was so good, we ordered an extra tea set, it was already past the tea-time hours but they let us order it.

Apart from their tea, their menu is also quite extensive and very cheap too!

Mee Siam @ 土司工坊 Toast Box

After I saw their new addition of the Mee Siam, I had to give it a try. They finally had something new on their menu since they opened.

As commented in my previous reviews, the Laksa is the most tasteless in Hong Kong, however today it was hotter than usual, also the prawns still had guts attached.

Anyway, the Mee Siam is not as strong as the one at Katong, the coconut milk is very prominent in the soup base. Slighty fruitier than the Katong one, and not spicy at all.
I would recommend it to people who haven’t tried Mee Siam before, to see if they can accept that sort of flavour, and if they can, they can try the stronger one at Katong, which is also at its true spicyness.

For Toastbox, I feel their food is a gentle representation for Singaporean food.

Snowflake ice with Valrhona chocolate @ 糖仁街 China Town Dessert

My second visit to China Town dessert.

This time I had the taro snowflake ice with hazelnut syrup topped with Valrhona chocolate balls.

It tasted as good as last time, however slightly different this time with the Valrhona chocolate, rich dark chocolate blending with faint taste of Taro.
The taro base is not as milky as the one at Sweet CC, this one is more icy.
