Rancid sweets from Tai Cheong

Tai Cheong Bakery (Mong Kok)

Originally planned to get these grapefruit sweets for some fellow foodies because they seemed interesting.

As always I will also get one for myself to try so that I know whether it actually tastes good before giving them to people.

In this case, when I unscrewed the lid, I could smell rancid coconut so I tried a little bit and it had definitely gone off.

I checked the rest and they smelt the same so I took them back.

The staff at Tai Cheong could also smell it and offered to exchange it for other products so I got them exchanged.
The other ones on the shelf smelt rancid as well and I wondered if it was because of the bright light directly above the jars heating them up.

Thankfully this place had basic customer service unlike other local places.

It would be amusing if I did not try them because the ones I would have given to foodies would definately be negative reviews.

Cherikoff nougats from Macau

Cherikoff (Vila de Taipa)
Thanks <<IVY>> for these nougats from Macau.

They were individually wrapped.

The nougats were quite crunchy, after chewing them for a bit, they got chewier and the sweetness was just right complemented by the crunchy peanuts.

Ice cubes made with pieces of fruit

Green Lane (Western District)
Went past this shop quite a few times because their drinks attracted me.
They had fruit slushes made with real fruit and fruit teas.
The fruit slush was sold out so I ended up getting the fruit tea which was an even better choice.

I really liked the fruit tea because I found some very special ice cubes.
The drink on the other hand did not have much tea taste.

Each ice cube had a piece of fruit in it.

After I finished the drink, the fruit was ready to eat and icy cold too.

I loved their icecubes, it was the best part of the drink.
They were pretty and cooled down the drink and you can eat the fruit afterwards.
Apart from the drinks, the owners were really nice because I walked past that shop so many times but they were still smiling at me and did not frown at me because I was looking and not making purchase until the very last moment.

Huge chocolate shaped mooncake

If this was a real mooncake with lotus paste and egg yolks it would probably be very sickening, but it is actually a chocolate cake shaped like a traditional mooncake!

Disgusting Chinese pandan cookies

Pak See Kut Cake Shop (Wan Chai)
The small branch of Pak See Kut a few doors away has closed and they have moved to a bigger store a few doors away.

This time I got the pandan cookies which were displayed at the front of the store in a glass cabinet.

Pandan cookies:

The texture was nice and crumbly but the rancidness of the cookies spolt it.
The cookies were a bit too sweet.

Clean joint for Indonesian food

DPK My Kitchen (Causeway Bay)
Came here before a tasting because I was attracted by their banner at the front.

It was clear and concise with Chinese, English, Indonesian with prices.

I ended up getting these fried chicken things which looked liked fried siumai's in the cabinet.

These chicken things are called Bakso Ayam.
(Ayam meaning chicken).

There were tables there so I sat down and ate them.

Bakso ayam goreng:

They tasted really nice and were crispy on the outside filled with some diced carrots.
Basically they were fried ground chicken meat balls.
I will come back and try their other rice dishes as they have a clear menu in English.

[Spark Bar & Restaurant - MongKok] The sparkle of sparks

To be honest I am reluctant to dine in Mong Kok because there are too many people and usually the food does not impress.
Again, I had doubts for this tasting but as I said I shouldn’t be biased.
The food was good and there were quite a few dishes I would come back for.

Spark’s is located on the third floor of Ho King Commercial Building where they used be famous for selling the pornographic and pirated copies of VCDs that have made the shopping centre famous.

Anyway, that is now history and they now sell computer and phone accessories!
Here was what we tried that night and you could tell some of the dishes were done by experienced people.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Juice with pineapple, orange and apricot:

Tasted nice and tropical with a peachy tone.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mussels simmered in white wine cream sauce:

The mussels were really nice as the white wine sauce was really creamy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Clams simmered in Hoegaarden beer:

I really liked these clams because clams are slightly softer than mussels and retains the sauce.
The hoegaarden beer has a really nice salty taste which tasted great with the clams.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Buffalo chicken wings:

Tried the buffalo wings piping hot and when they were cooled down, at different temperatures they tasted different.
I liked them hot because the taste was tangier and the cracked black pepper on top spiced it up.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Deep-fried Hokkaido scallop with eel marinated sauce:

Basically if you like popcorn shrimp or southern fried chicken, then you will like this because the scallops were coated in that coating which has a slightly fiery taste.
The scallops tasted good without the sauce and the scallops were still tender inside.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fettuccine with cattle cheek braised in red wine sauce:

The beef was lovely and tender in rich red wine sauce, but the fettuccine was a bit too buttery for my preference.
