A salute to the crab specialist

This place is famous for crabs but I never made it because it is better to go in big groups to share and secondly I am not an expert at eating crabs.

The restaurant is big and they have private rooms and karoake as well.

After this visit, I would love to go again because there are lot of crab dishes which you can manage easily without the trouble of deshelling it.
There is more to the menu than fried crab and it was great to see Heekee crab general come up with some creative new and delicious dishes.

Must order items are marked with ***
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
蒜蓉粉絲蒸聖子皇$48/隻:
Steamed razor clams with garlic and glass noodles.

The clams were a bit chewy but I loved the glass noodles on top which are always the best because it absorbs the razor clam sauce and garlic.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
***新菜式:

This dish is new but I loved it because it was crab mousse rolls topped with rich crab roe and crabmeat sauce.
The mousse which had crab was enriched by the crab roe giving it a stong delicious crab taste and there is more crab roe sauce in the tomato!!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
川鹵牛展 $68:

Did not try this.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
***黑松露波菜汁蟹鉗 $68/位:
Crab claw in spinach and truffle soup.

I was really looking forward to this because it was a big chunky deshelled crab claw.
This dish probably didn't exist a few years ago because the ingredients and presentation are quite modern.
The crab was fresh and springy with a strong unami taste while the spinach and truffle complemented it nicely.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
蟹肉燕窩羹 $108/位:
Thick crab soup with bird's nest.

Another bowl of soup with chunky pieces of crab and prized birds nest great for sharing.
The soup was light with lots of crabmeat, egg and minced pork which held to hold the soup together.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
***黃金蟹蓋 $88‏:
Stuffed golden crab shell

The filling in the shell was infused with lots of curry and finely shredded spring onions which was just divine.
Another great dish for people who don't know how to deal with the crabshell.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
喜記正宗避風塘炒蟹 一斤二兩 $360:
Hee Kee Typhoon Shelter style crab

The crab claw was cracked by the restaurant which made it more managable than I expected.
Each bite of crab was sensational flavoured by the salty and peppery spices.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
椒鹽雙拼 $98:
Fried fish and squid

The fried fishes had a delicate crispy coating but the fish inside just melted in your mouth, however the squid was a little over done.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
***招牌將軍令 $68/位:
Hee Kee general order

This was crabmeat patty shaped into a crab claw.
It is an option for people who want to have the Typhoon Shelter crab without the need of deshelling because it was surrounded with the fragrant crispy pieces as the Typhoon shelter crab dish.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
蠔皇扣鮮鮑$68/位:

The abalone was soft with rich oyster sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
士多啤利骨 $88:
Ribs in strawberry sauce

The ribs were juicy with a strawberry tang to it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
***蟹粉燴時蔬 $168:
Seasonal vegetables with crab roes.

A great dish of greens covered with thick crab roe sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
蟹油炒麵$72:

The noodles were a great carbohydrate filler for those who need to have rice or noodles to fill them up.
If you happen to order the Fried crab earlier with the crispy pieces of garlic and chili, save some for the noodles because they make a great accompaniment with the noodles.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
招牌奶皇流沙包$24/3隻:
Custard bun with molten filling

The custard buns were fluffy and soft with a rich starchy egg yolk filling in the middle without being too sweet.

Da Rong He debuts at the Mandarin Oriental

Da Rong He, an award winning Sichuan restaurant in China will be showcasing their dishes from 19th to 27th September 2014. Chef Wang Zheng Jing, co-founder and general manager of Da Rong He and his team of six chefs will be presenting a series of signature dishes.

During this period, there will be more than 25 different signature dishes on the à la carte menu and two special set menus.

Set menus are priced at HKD698* per person for the eight-course lunch menu and HKD1,480* per person for the ten-course dinner menu.

Recommended dishes are "Tea Smoked Duck", "Pickled Bamboo Shoot, Baby Ginger, Kale, Walnut", "Steamed Fish Head with Red Chilli" and "Wok Fried Fresh Abalone and Bean Sprout".

When I arrived at Man Wah, I was greeted with a beautiful oriental setting overlooking the harbour.

There is an exquisite octagonal room too for more privacy.

Here was what we tried:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
金牌海蜇頭:
Jellyfish head, black vinegar, chilli oil

The jellyfish head was scrumptious, each piece was crisp with a sweet taste complemented by the chili oil.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
蜀南竹毛肚:
Bamboo pith, Sichuan peppercorn

The bamboo piths which are normally pale in colour were green because there were lots of finely diced peppers mixed into it but the taste was not as spicy as it looked.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
夫妻肺片:
Beef, offal, peppercorn and chilli oil

Did not try this.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
老壇泡山珍:
Pickled bamboo shoot, baby ginger, asparagus lettuce, Morel mushroom, fox nuts, whelks, walnut.

This was a nice medley of vegetables and whelks which did not look spicy but it was quite spicy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
川北涼粉鹵肉鍋盔:
Glass noodle, braised pork, peppercorn and chilli oil

Each strand of noodle was perfectly rectangular and translucent, and it was packed with aromas and spices from the Sichuan pepper.
A definite must order if you can handle spicy food but be prepared for a strong tingling sensation after you eat it.

It also came with bread pockets because some people like to put the glass noodles in it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
沸騰魚 :
Chinese perch, peppercorn, chilli, hot oil

The bowl of chili looks deceiving, after removing the chilis, there are chunks of perch fish in the bowl.

The fish is silky and soft with a strong taste of peppercorn but the spiciness was surprisingly palatable.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
自發豆芽爆炒鮮鮑:
Wok fried fresh abalone, bean sprout

This was stir fried bean tips from the beansprouts with fresh abalones.

There was a lovely charred soy sauce taste on the abalone and on the beans which had a lovely crunch and chew to it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
*大蓉和樟茶鴨 :
Tea smoked duck

A beautifully smoked duck with soft pink coloured meat and crispy crackling skin.
The taste was amazing and full of tea aroma.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
開門紅 :
Steamed fish head, red capsicum, red chilli

The dish was stunning, covered with red capsicums contrasted by the green spring onions with the steamed fish buried beneath it.
Unfortunately, I found this too spicy, but there was a side of finely chopped greens to go with.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
官燕四川雞豆花:
Steamed chicken pudding, bird’s nest

The texture of the pudding was just like tofu with finely grounded chicken mixed into it and theh broth was clear and oiless.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
*金湯養身鍋:
Rice congee, shrimps and chicken broth, sea cucumber, minced fish, taro

The congee came a in a beautiful Oriental ceramic dark blue pot.

The congee was divine and the best congee because it was golden orange infused with a strong prawn broth taste with pieces of fresh shrimp and pork in it refreshed by the taro pieces.
I loved the taro pieces because it did not have a starchy texture but a crisp and viscous texture.

Cute desserts in a collectible Disney container

Maxim's have launched some new desserts which come in a cute collectible Disney container.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Donald duck and Mickey mouse:

The great thing is that the dessert is in a separate cup so you don't have to wash the container.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mickey mouse:

Basically it had a layer of banana pudding on the bottom with rich chocolate mousse on top.

The taste was quite nice with a hint of banana which was creamy with rich chocolate mousse on top.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Donald duck:

I liked it how the colours of blue and orange complement and contrast each other because blue and orange are opposite on the colour wheel.

It was light and refreshing with pieces of pomelo in it.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Sichuan noodles at 東門町

Came here randomly for noodles.

There are two different broths:
-Hot and sour
-Hot Sichuan peppercorn

I chose the Sichuan peppercorn because the other broth had to be paired with potato noodles.

The lady at the counter was quite helpful because she gave advice on the levels of spiciness.

I had to choose an extra ingredient with that broth because it was compulsory so chose the beancurd skin.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Noodles with beancurd skin:

The noodles were a bit bland and too soft for my liking because it did not absorb the salty broth.
However, the beancurd skin absorbed the broth very well so it became quite salty.

Chocolate tour gift box by Lucullus

Previously tried the World tour gift box which was similar to this.

The "Happy chocolate tour gift box" is a cuter version containing:
Milk, almond praline, melon, vanilla, milk rice crispy, orange, dark rice crispy, strawberry, hazelnut praline, coke jelly, lemon, red apple, mango and blackcurrant chocolates.

They were too cute to eat, but the size was good because they were guilty free and I could try more flavours.
The coke jelly was the best with chewy coke jelly in the middle and the taste of chocolate and coke together were surprisingly good.
