Coffee Republic at Whitechapel

Impressive choices from hot/cold ruby chocolate, pistachio freezers to fine teas at Coffee Republic at Whitechapel.

Guyanese lunch for 7.99 at Corner house Wine bar, South Croydon

I'm so glad this has replaced the Thai place because Guyanese food is delish.
Normally I get my pastry fix like pineapple tarts in tooting.
Anyway the lunch sets are either noodles or rice so I got both for lunch and dinner.
What makes the chowmein and rice delicious is the five spice and I found them quite comforting like batchelors super noodles.
The texture is soft and reminds me of big fat instant noodles.
One came with fried bbq chicken and the other fried chicken.
Both were equally good as it was fried thigh meat but bbq was surprisingly good because the bbq sauce was tangy like buffalo sauce.
Also had the Guyanese egg balls, they are similar to scotch eggs but vegetarian coated with cassava mash.
The cassava mash was rather salty and one of the eggs was rather rubbery like it had been microwaved as you can see there are different layers of egg white in separation.

Food takes a good 30 minutes though to arrive and there is some slight msg in the noodles and rice.

Brunch at Donnelly's at The Bermondsey Bar & Kitchen

It was one of those lost Sundays where I couldn't decide where to go so randomly dined here.
I chose this place because it was empty hence peace and quiet.
It was confusing as the place is called Bermondsey Bar & Kitchen and there is Donnelly's as well.
According to the brunch menu, you will find lots of fresh, sustainable and ethical UK grown produce.
The only thing that caught my eye as being a bit different was the Kentish rainbow chard saag aloo, fried egg, yoghurt and crispy onions so I ordered that.
Despite the place was empty, it took a little longer than anticipated to arrive.
Overall, a nice twist of saag aloo with rainbow chard instead of spinach and a fried egg on top.
It was a little salty though and you could really taste that annoying grill on the egg white.

Lithuanian food at Bernelių Užeiga, Shepherd's Inn Beckton

I love Lithuanian food which is similar to Russian and Eastern European cuisine.
It was a lovely experience at Bernelių Užeiga, Shepherd's Inn Beckton where you feel transported into Lithuania not only by the unique newspaper style menu but the royal decor and pictures all over the place.
I found it similar to Mamuska which is Polish at Waterloo in terms of the menu there as well.
Although food was good, the service and quality could have been better.
For starters had the Varškės Sūris cheese which is a baked cheese.
This was a brilliant start as the taste and texture of the cheese was amazing, the texture is similar to firm tofu with a bit of resistance spiced with herbs like oregano etc.
It is so moreish that you keep going back for more.
The only thing that was strange was the saucers given to us for use as sharing plates because it was identical the one I got for the tea.
For mains, the Bulvinių Blynų Bokšas Su Varškės Padažu ir Lašiša (potato pancakes with salmon) was lush especially the potato pancakes which were soft and sticky with a strong potato taste.
The salmon was ok but not as nice as the ones other people have posted on instagram because it contained dark grey edges which is cosmetically not nice.
The dumplings Koldūnai Angelų Ašaros were the usual pork filling dumplings which were rather creamy and heavy.
Last but not least, the bread ice cream Duonos Ledai which was an interesting finish with crispy black rye pieces.
Strangely the plates were not cleared and dessert was served asap.
It wasn't bad but it tasted like cheap ice cream at an expensive price.

French Taco experience at Tacosmash

Finally tried some French Tacos.
There are a few in London but visited Tacosmash because of the unique location that you wouldn't have dreamed of decades ago but everywhere is changing.
French taco is basically a pressed tortilla wrap with meat, fries and sauce.
There are no tacos in it.
I didn't feel like meat that day so just chose halloumi, buffalo sauce and cheddar cheese.
To be honest, it wasn't bad because the Buffalo sauce was a good as it was sharp and salty with a little hot kick and the halloumi was squeaky, soft and not too firm.
The only gripe was that I was given mozzarella and not cheddar because the taste and texture is so different you can tell.
The machine/press they used on the wraps were not that clean because you can still smell and taste the grill which made it sickly to finish.

Afghan delights at Afghan , Croydon Boxpark

Finally you can now get some Afghan delights in Croydon without going to Harrow or up North or even the far East like Ilford.
Satisfy your fix at Afghan Caravan at Boxpark and for pastries there is a small bakery in South Croydon.
They have the usual suspects like Mantu dumplings but I had the Chapli Kebab in Fresh Naan.
I was captivated by this because of the chips which look hand cut and fried to order from the colour and the way the surface is different with some wrinkles and gloss.
As expected, it was to my liking.
The chapli kebab was visually like a smashed beef patty but it was not as beefy as I expected which was good and it was green in the middle with a soft texture.
Beneath it was the delicious chips I was looking forward to which were soft and tangy from my favourite sumac.
Along with that, there were pickled onions and all that which made it moreish.
The crispy lamb and caramelized onion bolani was a bit disappointing because it was too soft and the filling was mainly silky mashed potato and not much of the onions or minced lamb hence I would have been better off with the feta and spinach or the leek.
Overall, worth trying.

Costa Tuna Melt

The Costa Tuna Melt is always there which is why I haven't try until now.
I didn't realize it was so tasty especially when microwaved because I love my bread warm and soft.
The cheese is gooey while the tuna won't dry out in the microwave.
Will definitely get this again.
