McDonald's: Rice Fun Wrap [PORK]

McDonald's

After a tasting, I was determined to try this because this is one of the designated places that serve the rice wrap with pork cutlet in it.
They have the Tonkotsu rice wrap or the pork cutlet with curry sauce and rice.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tonkotsu rice wrap:

The taste of this was ok, but not as delicious as the chicken or beef version because the pork was a bit dry.
The pork tasted nice with the cucumbers, lettuce and mayonnaise.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
For the designated branches, please phone McDonalds who forgot to call me back after I left my number so you may have to call twice.

Kee Wah x HIT Crossover

Kee Wah (Central)

Thanks to a friend for sharing this with me, I just wanted the Tin because it was a lovely blue container truck with working wheels.
Inside the tin, it had almond biscuits and pineapple cakes made by Kee Wah Bakery in Hong Kong.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Almond biscuits:
Very dry, crumbly and hard.
Not too sweet with strong almond aroma.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pineapple shortcake:
Extremely buttery shortbread pastry filled with sweet dense pineapple filling.

Cheesy Tots @ Burger King

BURGER KING (North Point)
I was surprised to see Burger King offering Cheesy Tots because what is sold in HK is decided by Hong Kong's Burger King's headquarters on what they think will sell.

I got a box of Cheesy Tots which has 9 bites, in the US you get 8 for USD$1.99.

They're basically tater tots with a breaded coating and some melted cheese in the middle.

The Cheesy Tots taste a bit like mac and cheese but not too cheesy.
Not very exciting and they were not hot enough.

Italiano pizza flavoured fried chicken @ KFC

Kentucky Fried Chicken (Wan Chai)
When the new Italiano pizza chicken came out a few weeks ago, I was not really compelled to try it.
I only tried it because they launched this new Italiano mustard sauce which was not initially launched with it.

I ordered one of the meals which includes two pieces of the Italiano chicken, chicken a la king, softened egg tart with chocolate and the drink I upgraded it to a hot chocolate.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Italiano pizza chicken:
The chicken had been fried for a while so it was a bit dry.
As for the Italiano pizza flavoured coating, it just tasted like tomato and paprika powder and nothing like pizza.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Italiano mustard sauce with herbs:
I tried the sauce on its own and all I can say is that it is artificial!
But the worst thing it can taste and smell like was nail polish.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Hot chocolate:
Evidently the hot chocolate is different to the hot chocolate served at UK's KFC.
Here it is chocolate powder and hot water, but in the UK, the hot chocolate comes out from the Hot chocolate machine with silky foam on top.

After stirring it, I realised the chocolate powder had sank to the bottom, so I had to stir it.

When I finished stirring, the drink tasted very watery and sweet.
It lacked milk in the drink which could have made it taste better.

Lab Made's first anniversary

Lab Made Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream Laboratory (Tai Hang)

It's been a year since Lab Made has opened........................

I havent been recently because the weather is too hot.

This time I went to try the new Birthday cake flavour.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Birthday Cake:

It didnt really say what flavour it was on their FB page, but when I got there I realised it was my favourite PANDAN!! way to go!!!!
As usual it is mixed with other goodies, it had crispy bits, M&Ms/Smarties, rainbow sprinkles and a star shaped shortbread on top.
I requested it without the sprinkles because I do not really like them.
Other than that, the pandan flavour was really nice and it tasted buttery too.

Choconana cake Mcflurry 2013

McDonald's (North Point)

I do not really like banana but I just felt like trying the new McFlurry for the sake of it.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Choconana cake Mcflurry:

Luckily it was not too sweet but I wonder if it will taste the same on my next visit.
On my last visit I had the black and white icecream but when I had it again it was too sweet.
Anyway, the banana taste was subtle and not too artificial, the soft cake pieces were delicious with the ice-cream.

McDonalds new dipping sauces for 2013

McDonald's

Came here for the new chicken McNuggets sauces.

Technically the honey mustard is not new because it has been served before.
The rest were slightly different so they were worth trying.

Usually they only launch two sauces at a time and then the other flavours at a later date, but this time you can order 18 nuggets and try all four sauces.

To be honest, it's a bit sickly eating so many nuggets so its better to share.

The packaging for the 18 nuggets and the four sauces were quite cute.

L-R: chili, honey, curry, sesame
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Honey mustard:
To be honest, the honey mustard is really boring, they have this as a choice for people not daring to try the other ones.
It just tastes slightly sweet with a hint of mustard.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Singapore curry sauce:
This tasted like the sweet curry sauce at UK's McDonald, but the colour is not opaque like the British sauce, it looks similar to Satay sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sesame miso sauce:
Out of the four flavours, this tasted the best and the sesame taste was not as strong as the miso.
However it lacked the saltiness taste of miso and it was slightly sweet but still likeable.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Korean chili sauce:
This was also a winner out of the four but it can be quite spicy.
The taste was quite beany and tastes like the HoiSin sauce that goes with Peking duck.

Delicious white chocolate pudding in drinks

Starbucks Coffee (Wan Chai)

When I found out about the new drinks at Starbucks I was captivated by the white pudding in it.
There is a choice of dark mocha or green tea, both with white chocolate pudding at the bottom.

I couldn't decide which to get so I got both, I was expecting the green tea to taste better because I don't really like coffee but the dark mocha tasted the best out of the two.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Dark Mocha White Chocolate Pudding Frappuccino® blended beverage:
The dark mocha did not have strong coffee taste which was great and in the drink there where bits of solid chocolate to chew on.
The white chocolate pudding was nice because it balanced out the mocha taste and it was creamy and tasted like Nestle's milky bar chocolate.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Green Tea White Chocolate Pudding Frappuccino® blended beverage:
This was the usual green tea frappuccino but it tasted too sweet and with the white chocolate pudding it was a bit sickly.

Everyone's a Chocoyou designer

ChocoYOU is an innovative chocolate company based in Hong Kong, allowing everyone to create their very own chocolate with ingredients they like on the chocolate they choose.

Every bar is different, and unique, and 100% personalized.

ChocoYOU and its parent company Chocorati are founded by television-executive-turned-chocolatier Alexis Kwong Alvarez. He started making his own chocolate creations at home, mastering the art of tempering and blending Asian ingredients with chocolate. When he left the media industry in December 2010 after 16 years, he toyed with the idea of starting a chocolate company with the encouragement of his friends to share his passion.

If you have seen their chocolate bars before, each one has its own design to it, even if you don't order it is fun to try it out on their website by choosing the chocolate and the type of ingredients you would like to put on it.

There are so many choices for chocolate from milk, dark to chili or even curry.
The ingredients are really diverse from colourful candies to printing photos on a piece of chocolate plaque.

Each chocolate bar can be named and labelled on the packaging too.

I was really priviledged to get an invitation from Alexis to create three chocolate bars.

It took me two days to choose because there were so many choices and I wanted the taste and the colours to match because as well as taste I am a person that likes to design things as well!

From the choice of chocolates, I reduced it down to three: Dark chocolate, mint chocolate and Curry chocolate.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Supersupergirl mania:

Clearly this chocolate was more on the design so I chose mint chocolate for this one and I did not want other ingredients to over power the mint taste so I chose candies such as silver balls, silver flakes and marshmallows to go on top.
This was one of the bars I chose to put a photo plaque on it.
It came out how I expected because silver, white and pink go nicely together.

Ingredients: Mint chocolate, marshmallows, caramel crunch, photo, Silver pieces and silver ball candies.
I have to admit, it was too pretty to eat, hence I have not tried this one yet!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Dark snowy forest:

I chose dark chocolate for this and I felt that berries taste good with dark chocolate so I picked Raspberry crispy pieces, dried whole strawberries, and dried plums because dried plums are rare.
I also chose coconut flakes and pistachio nuts to complement the red colours of the berries.
In the end I named it Dark snowy forest because it had coconut hence the snow and the forest represented by the green pistachio nuts and berries.
It was really good that each ingredient was generously sprinkled on giving the maximum taste in every square of chocolate.Ingredients: Dark chocolate, Raspberry crispy, dried whole strawberries, dried plums, dried coconut and dried pistachio nuts.

Taste: I loved the taste of this because the dark chocolate and tart berries were really nice complemented by the gorgeous coconut pieces.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Savoury madness:
It was really good, they also had savoury ingredients which I chose because it would be weird choosing sweet ingredients.Ingredients: Chocolate curry, Himalayan pink salt, basil, oregano, vegetarian bacon bits and crispy chicken noodles.

Taste:
As expected the taste was really really nice and you could instantly smell the curry when you took the bar out from the packaging!
The curry and herbs tasted really nice together and the crispy noodles, bacon bits added to it extra savouryness, hence the name Savoury madness!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
When I got my chocolate bars, it was fun sharing it and showing my designs as well as sharing it because it tasted nice.

Thank you Alexis for this fun Chocolate experience.

McDonalds: Black forest crunch sundae

Tried the Black forest crunch sundae because it was new.

The poster does not really say what is in it but when I tried it, there was chocolate syrup and raspberry syrup garnished with crispy wafer pieces.

I was slightly disappointed because I was expecting some canned cherries but it was just chocolate and raspberry syrup to mimic the ingredients. Usually cherry is the main ingredient and not raspberry.

It would be great if it was topped with canned cherries and chocolate shavings.
[The reason for canned cherries is because the sundae costs $7 so you can't expect much]

The sundae was quite sweet too.

BBQ Chipotle sauce @ McDonald's

McD's BBQ Chipotle sauce!

I was looking forward to this one because it is hard to find Chipotle sauce in Hong Kong unless you know where you can specifically get it.
Anyway I liked the way they have mixed their BBQ sauce with Chipotle sauce because it tastes like their usual BBQ sauce with added spicyness from the chili.
However I found the BBQ Chipotle sauce hotter than the Chili pomodoro sauce.

Septuagennial anniversary, 70 dishes and lucky 32

I have always known that Yung Kee is famous in Hong Kong because everyone has asked me whether I have tried it before. Same with other Chinese places, I don't really know what to order when I am there.

Finally went because my friends said it was their 70th anniversary on 21st of May, eight days before ATV's anniversary and from May 2012 onwards they will have ten special dishes on their menu every month until November 2012 which changes each month on the 10th.

It is located close to Central MTR station near Lan Kwai Fong.

Yung Kee was founded by Kam Shui Fai where his initial restaurant was located at 32 Wing Lok Street, later moved to 32 Pottinger Street, then finally 32 Wellington Street, the Yung Kee Building! (His destined lucky number!)

When I got there I was surprised the restaurant had four floors with their own lift as well because I did not know it was the entire building.
Upon opening the door the restaurant was filled with tourists and locals.

I spent longer at the reception than I intended to because the customers behind me were very agressive and barged to the front to inform that they had arrived.
There were at least two people who did that, so I approached a member of staff walking past and was shown kindly to the lift to the corresponding floor where our table was allocated.

Anyway finally sat down and was presented with the special anniversary menu, the design was really nice.
Each dish had a beautiful Chinese description and name but you wouldnt know what it is unless you are native.
Just like Shepherds pie or Cottage pie which does not mention any beef or lamb so unless you are native or have tried it before then you wont know what it is, but saying that they had a simple English menu which tells you exactly what the dishes are.

I only ordered one dish and the rest ordered by them as I was clueless on what to order.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Thousand year egg with pickled ginger
To start off this was placed on the table.
The texture of the egg was jellier and softer than the usual ones I have tried and the yolk was extremely molten.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Smoked Layer Pork with Pine Nuts - $350
I only ate the meat which was nice and soft and it was nice accompanied with pine nuts.
Also with the pork, there was some pickled vegetable which acts as a cleanser for the palate after eating the fatty pork.
Usually this item needs to be ordered a few days in advance but because of the anniversary menu it is available this month.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Stir-fried Frog Stomach with Asparagus & Pine Nuts - $180
This was my favourite dish, the locals were just as surprised as I was seeing Frog stomach on the menu.
It was nice and colourful with green pakalana flower buds (a flower that has a strong aroma at night).
Initally I assumed the orange coloured item was the frog stomach because I associated it with sea cucumber internal organs which are also orange but it turned out to be orange tree fungas which I've never seen before.
There was also gingko nuts in it as well which has that nice creamy taste with some bitterness.
The frog stomach's texture and taste was similar to squid but much crispier and similar to fried chicken cartilage.
Just for this dish they had to stock up so many frog stomachs to make it available for this month!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Braised Pigeon in Gooseberry Sauce - $180
Again if I saw the Chinese menu I would not know what this is but I really like tangy food so I liked this as well.
However the gooseberry is slightly different to the ones in England. The ones here have a large stone in the middle whereas the English ones are veiny and juicy like grapes.
When it was placed on the table all I could smell was the sliced bell peppers but after trying out the pigeon I could taste the tangyness of the gooseberry but the gooseberries were not really visible in the dish.
I found it spicy as well but it was not the chili or pepper type, it was the sichuan type of pepper.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Double-boiled White Mushroom Soup - $88
The highlight of the soup was the white mushrooms and they really did look paler than the usual dark shiitake mushrooms. It tastes similar to the British mushrooms which are earthier in taste.
In the soup there was a slice of ham which was not the usual Chinese ham (gum-wah-foh-tui), it was sliced from the hind leg part of the pig, similar to the smoked thinly sliced trotters (fun-tai).
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Braised Pomelo Peel with Shrimp Roe - $138
This was my favourite, a thick and wholesome pomelo peel!
Usually the rind is used in cooking, but here it was the white interior part between the pomelo and the rind.
The texture was like soft mushy braised white carrot, and it was slightly translucent which I didnt expect because raw pomelo skin is white just like the covering of Camembert cheese.
The taste was amazing, it was light, and there was no bitter taste at all with the full flavour coming from the dried prawn roes.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Overall I felt that their featured dishes were good and it gives people an insight of their popular and awarded dishes.
Also there are dishes which usually need to be pre-ordered but are available during the anniversary.
For improvements, I think they should have the coming new dishes for August on their website so that people can mark their calenders if they see a dish they like as the tables get booked pretty fast.
