Prawn Tempura @ Yoshinoya

Saw this at some branch but when I went to another branch to try it, they did not have it!

But anyway, I hope to try it soon because I prefer their non-beef dishes.

Grilled squid and batter grilled shrimp@ Saizeriya

Felt like going to Saizeriya and was glad I went because there was new items on the menu.

Tried the grilled squid and batter grilled shrimps which was not previously on the menu.
Also ordered the black pepper sauce and chicken combo.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Grilled squid
It looked nearly the same as the product shot, however I was worried it might not have been cooked thoroughly as the squid was huge and thick,
Anyway, the middle was not cooked long enough but edible.
The sauce for the squid was really nice, it was similar to satay sauce but with more savory tones in it.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Batter grilled shrimps
The shrimps were huge, they were the same length as the table spoon.
The coating for the shrimp was quite thick too, the sauce that came with it was the prawn cocktail sauce that is served with the prawn cocktail and fried chicken pieces.
The coating was sligthly burnt and dark if you compare it to the product shot.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Black pepper sauce and chicken combo
This was a platter of fried chicken pieces, chicken wings and grilled chicken thigh with black pepper sauce which is quite good because you can sample all those items.

Vietnamese sausage and prawn salad @ 山地人越南法包專門店 MR. Vietnamese Baguette House

Arrived at this baguette house, previously Toppings, was amazed how it had been redecorated.
It looks very green like a health shop, with pretty displays, and cute little bottles of their own branded fish sauce (not for retail).

Anyway ordered the Vietnamese sausage and prawn salad, and the baguette with abalone mushrooms to takeaway.
After a long journey home of bumps and humps, I was very surprised the baguette was still intact and the fillings had not fallen out.
For the salad, I was given three tubs of chilli vinegar, frankly two is sufficient.

Now to the food, the baguette was bursting with different tastes with every mouthful,
sometimes I could taste the black pepper, coriander, spring onion, then the meaty mushrooms, and then the sausage. However I couldnt taste the duck liver pate, the thing I was most looking forward to. Maybe I will order the liver toast next time.

As for the salad, the cabbage and carrots were sliced nice and thin, soaking up the sauce well, however the Jelly fish was cut in little squares. I would have preferred shredded jelly fish, which was be easier to fork out with the greens. Surprisingly I could taste some liver in the salad. I have the same opinion as FoodieWil that the salad tastes a little too sweet for my liking.

Yoghurt prawn angel hair pasta @ Grove Sandwiches

Been wanting to try this for a long time, so ordered the Yoghurt prawn angel hair,
when it came, there were some slices of ham in it too, was not expecting that, but anyway, gave the pasta some flavour as prawn wasnt that strong.

The sauce was pretty pink, with lots of freshly cubed tomato pieces, nice tangy sauce, but not strong in yoghurt taste even though it is meant to be yoghurt.

Prawn noodles @ 蝦麵店 Prawn noodle shop

Before I tried this, I compared their menu against Katong, prices here a cheaper than Katong. However they are relatively cheaper because of their ingredients, ie seafood, Prawn noodle shop offers mussels, crabsticks, fish balls which are frozen goods and readily available.
Katong is more expensive as it contains big prawns, and cockles, where they need to be sourced.

The most expensive prawn mee offered by Katong is 70 dollars while Prawn noodle shop costs 43 dollars.

Anyway, walking in the shop, there is a strong prawn smell, which is reassuring, as the Prawn noodle is their speciality. I ordered the Prawn noodles, which I was told was spicy by the staff. However it was not that spicy, just like the other reviewers said, so I would recommend this place for people who can't have it that spicy.
The soup base is strong in prawn, and not so sweet as the other places, and it dosnt have black peppar taste either.

Noodle wise, they have the basics, cambodian noodles, vermicelli, and oil noodles. But I don't like the vermicelli here, as it is thicker than the ones in Katong, and sweeter.

For the main ingredients, the pork was good, not too dry and had flavour to it, prawn wise, a little less in quantity than Katong, in Katong, one prawn is sliced into two pieces, however here, the prawn is sliced into four pieces.

LKYCS's last christmas @ 樂香園咖啡室

Heard it was shutting down soon from Chan Jan, so decided to pay a visit to this Chinese style cafe, a place I don't usually set foot in. The calendar at Lok Heung Yuen signifies the cafes age, it is one of those manual old date boards.

Before going, I checked its reviews, and saw that it was famous for Oyster cakes and tomato cakes. I was a bit puzzled because not many Chinese cafés offer them; all was answered when I got there, because it is a Chiu Chow styled café.

Apart from the fried cakes, I was recommend the chicken pie by Chan Jan. Before ordering it, I really did not know what to expect of a Chinese pie, never tried a Chinese pie before, ie would it look like an English pie? What would be inside it?

Anyway, I ordered the chicken pie, scrambled eggs with prawn and rice, stir fried black bean sauce clams and the oyster cake too. The tomato cake the one I most wanted to try was not available that day.

The chicken pie turned out looking like a normal pie, with a sweet crunchy short crust pastry, and chicken inside.
Then I had the scrambled eggs, the best I have eaten so far, just like Australian Milk co, the egg has a yolk like layer on top of it, just like a half cooked egg, and tasty spring onions mixed in it.

As for the evening snacks, they were ok; the oyster cake was a bit greasy, would have been perfect if I could have tried the tomato cake too, but that’s just life!

Rice bucatini @ 越色生香 Tropicana Cuisine

The usual vietnamese menu, and then I saw the macaroni rice noodles, long rice noodles pipes like macaroni. The last time I had this type of noodle was at Lai Chi Kok Hunnan style noodle bar.

Here I ordered the Prawn macaroni rice noodles with Curry sauce as stated on the menu, however during ordering, I was told it was White curry sauce, as the chinese is different. Although Satay sauce was also available I stuck with my original order of white curry sauce, just so that I can have a comparision to Satay King.

The food arrived in a fashionable bowl, and a separate bowl of white curry sauce.
I liked the generous pile of salted green spring onions, and the curled up prawns.
After eating the prawn, it reminded me of the plain prawns boiled in water, and it tastes good with the spring onions. As for the noodles, a bit chewy, some ends of it were still hard, and I would have preferred the holes to be bigger in the macaroni noodles so sauce cud get in. The white curry sauce is nothing compared to the taste at Satay King. The sauce is rather lumpy, and after tasting it, it all became clear, it is 70% dessicated coconut puree and ginger, but the ginger is not so strong. The taste was very milky and a little bit sickening, if it was spicier it would have been better, and if the noodles had bigger holes soaking more sauce, it would have tasted much better.
If I can have different noodles next time, I would want to try the satay sauce.

Noodles in Abalone sauce @ Star of Canton

Overall the food was good, especially the noodles, I thought the dumplings could be improved since the skin is cracked. Also the Abalone puff (chinese name), I assumed it would be a baked pastry of some sort, but it wasnt, it was just an over cooked roll, made of pancake/wonton pastry.
