Modern style roast suckling pig at BJ-Roaster!

I would have tried this earlier but there were so many dishes I wanted to try so went with more people.

There is an open kitchen where you can see the Chefs preparing the roast duck.

The roast suckling pig can also be seen being roasted through the window and you can feel the heat from it too.

Video of the the suckling pig being roasted.

The menu was good because the food was modernized which attracts people like me who are not keen on traditional Chinese food.

Here was what we had:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Hutong style crispy roasted pig:
It was a delight to order this because it was presented nicely on a wooden board, everything was neatly sliced and cut.
As well as cucumber, there was melon too to accompany the crispy roasted pig.
This is basically a Hutong suckling pig eaten in a Beijing style way wrapped in a pancake.
They give you honey mustard sauce as well as the traditional BBQ sauce with a side of salad in sesame dressing.

Personally I like traditional BBQ sauce but jam, English mustard or Dijon mustard would also taste great with it.
Anyway the pork was amazingly crispy and the fat was burnt off leaving deliciously crispy skin and tender pork which tasted so good with the sweetness of the melon, cucumber and the smokey BBQ sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sliced crispy pig with osmanthus pudding:

This was the winner of all dishes!!!
The presentation was amazing with golden jelly in the middle.
I liked the layers of cracker, jelly, cucumber and pork but the only problem was that it was a bit fiddly to eat which I resolved by biting into two layers at a time.
The savouriness of the pork paired with crisp cucumber slices and sweet osmanthus pudding was just bliss and the crunch of the cracker on the bottom gave it more mouthfeel.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Barbecued peking duck:

The duck skin was glistening and crispy with duck meat as well which made it satisying to eat.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
green salad with sesame dressing

The salad in the modern metallic bowl was delicious because the sauce was strong and you could taste quite a bit of peanut butter which strangely tasted nice in the salad.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
beancurd rolls with minced wild vegetables

This was pretty and delicious, there was a fragrant sesame oil taste contrasted by the grassy vegetables and a slight hint of coriander.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Vegetarian beancurd duck:

This was diced mushrooms and vegetables in a beancurd roll which I found impressive because the beancurd was delicious and crispy with moist juicy vegetable filling.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
marinated chicken in Chinese wine

The chicken was a bit bony but the texture of the chicken was really good because it was firm and meaty infused with fragrant Chinese wine.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
supreme soup with bamboo shoots

Soup is always a must in a Chinese meal, I enjoyed it because it had nice flavours coming from the pork and beancurd pieces.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
deep fried prawns with salted egg yolk

The prawns were huge, coated in delicious salty and crispy egg yolk, but it would be great if the shell was removed to make it easier to eat.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
fish fillets in hot chili oil:

To be honest the fish was too spicy because I tried it with the tip of my tongue and it was just too spicy for me.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
pork ribs in plum sauce

The ribs are sweet and sticky which would make a great dish for children.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
shredded peking vegetable:

A must for any meal, plain stir fried vegetables which are crisp and sweet.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Shanghai style dumplings

The dumplings were bursting with meat broth which was delicious with the addition of vinegar to balance the heaviness.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
pan fried pork bun

These buns are interesting because they are soft on the top with a crispy pan fried base filled with juicy minced pork.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
signature fried rice

The fried rice was full of goodness because there was quite a bit of ginger in it giving it a delicious fiery kick.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
peking style hand made pastry

The hand made pastry was similar to roti but flakier which would be great with curry sauce or sweet and sour sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
jasmine dragon pearls

Their tea selection was huge with some teas from Africa and Taiwan.
Mine was Jasmine which was fragrant and got stronger as it stood.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Deep fried souffle ball stuffed with mochi

These souffle balls were a treat because they had mochi inside which gives it an interesting chewy filling with sweet icecream inside the mochi.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Overall the whole experience was good and I loved the modern presentation and the use of Western ingredients to enhance the taste.

Great Shanghainese food at Crystal Jade

Crystal Jade has many restaurants and the dining environment is spacious and comfortable.
The menu has many languages including English so it is a great place to bring expats.

There were so many nice items on the menu that it was hard to choose so in the end I ordered the following.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
crispy eel $64:

The pieces of eel were crispy and boneless with a sweet taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
vegetarian beancurd rolls $54:

The vegetarian rolls were presented nicely, they were crispy filled with delicious vegetables.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
deep fried salt n pepper small croaker $76:

If your good with bones, this fish was delicious because it was crispy with a delicious salt and pepper coating while the fish is soft and silky.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
sauteed spinach with beans $58:

The spinach had a nice garlic taste with delicious beans in it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
stewed bean starch sheets with full cream crab roe $92:

This was my favourite and must be eaten quickly because the crab roe tastes better hot.
The elastic bean starch sheets were flavoured with delicious crab and crab roe.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
mushroom and crab meat pastry $38:

These pastries were moreish filled with minced pork and crab.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Noodles topped with hairy crab roe $68:

Finished off with the noodles which were amazing because the noodles were nicely flavoured when it was mixed with the rich crab roe.
As the noodles stood they clump together so they have soup for you to pour on top which helps loosen them.
Again, this is topped with crab roe which is best eaten hot.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Overall a great place to dine with reasonable prices.

The best Caribbean food

Caribbean food is popular in the UK but in Hong Kong it is scarce.

Mandy's Private Kitchen has been in Hong Kong for years but I did not discover it until now because Mandy used to cater private dinners and now she has a lovely restaurant in Sai Kung.
According to the SCMP, Mandy Nathali started her private kitchen in 2010 which serves Caribbean and Trinidadian food.

Shortly after this place opened, Rummin' Tings opened in Central but the food here has so much passion and love in it.

Anyway, I came here a few times because there were so many things I wanted to try.

When the food came, I had the same excitement as I did with African food because it was colourful and spicy.

Here were all the things I ate!!

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sorrel punch HKD$40:

This non alcoholic punch is made with hibiscus so it has a rosy taste.
Not the beverage for me because I can't handle flowery drinks.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mini Jamaican patties-veg HKD$60:

These patties are basically mini pasties filled with finely chopped vegetables in the middle paired with a dip.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Jerk chicken served with carnival salad, rice and peas HKD$125:

This dish was divine because the chicken was amazingly soft and juicy and the taste was complex because it was sweet, sour and fiery.
The carnival salad was just like a colourful carnival because it had carrots and purple cabbage which made it vibrant.
For the rice and peas I was looking for the peas but peas actually means beans in Caribbean style food.
Anyway, the rice was heaven because there was so much Thyme in it which made it really fragrant.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Curry goat HKD$140:

The rice and salad were the same as above.
The curry goat was quite bony but the curry was addictive because there was thyme, cumin and fiery scotch bonnet peppers that made it appetizing.
[The scotch bonnet peppers are grown locally by Mandy herself!!]
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Caribbean dips HKD$55:

This was pita bread and crudites served with three colourful dips: flamingo, Shado beni and Solomon gundy.
###########
The Flamingo was my favourite because the colour was pretty, it was made with gorgeous beetroots and my favourite cumin spice.

###########
The Shado Beni had a strong raw carrot taste to it.

###########
The Solomon gundy was nice and fruity because it had mango.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Trinidadian potato salad HKD$20:

Once you've had this, ordinary potato salads won't taste good anymore because this one is so flavourful with spring onions, herbs and lots of other herbs!!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Socca beef stew HKD$130:

The beef stew was just as good as the goat curry, again with lots of spices.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Feeling hot HKD$65:

Spicy beef and tomatoes cooked with scotch bonnets.
The beef was spicy which was sweet and fiery with onions in it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Corn bread HKD$20:

The cornbread was sweet and savoury so it was a bit confusing for my tastesbuds.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
I can't wait to come back again for the Jerk chicken, goat curry and new dishes but Sai Kung town has major transportation problems.
Hopefully there will be less people in the winter.

Iconic, delicious and affordable hot dogs

I love hotdogs but not many places do good hotdogs.
ICONIC H is impressive because they have a great variety of dogs and sauces!!

It was hard deciding which dog to get because there were too many choices.
The dogs are split into two categories 25 or 28, so the 25 costs $25 and the 28 costs $28.

I liked the $28 dogs because for that price it was impressive they had Sundried tomato (chicken), curry frankfurter, chicken and mushroom frank, apple chicken and lamb merguez.

In the end I chose the curry frankfurter and lamb merguez because not many places have it.

For an extra $3, there were some really cool sauces to choose such as truffle mayo, blue cheese and curry ketchup!!!

I chose curry ketchup with the curry frank and blue cheese with the lamb.

So $31 for a specialized dog with gourmet sauces is a real steal!

For snacks, I already had my eyes on the macaroni with cheese and potato smiles.

Here was what we had:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Iconic Salad:

Refreshing salad with crisp lettuce, molten egg and crab, perfect for the summer.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Lamb merguez and blue cheese sauce:

The lamb sausage was tasty with delicious strong blue cheese which complemented each other nicely.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chicken wings:

These were crispy with a caramelized honey coating and the chicken wings were tasty.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Curry frank with curry ketchup:

As well as the lamb, this was also delicious because the curry frank and the curry ketchup was really nice with a sweet tone followed a curry kick.
The sauce reminds me of UK's McDonalds curry sauce which is also sweet.
I definitely recommend this because not many places have this sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Potato stars:

The locals are definitely going to like these because they are lovely and crispy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Veal frank with cheese:

Cheese lovers are going to love this because of the thick gooey cheese on top.
Next time I am going to pair it with a chicken frank so that it won't be so heavy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
ginger tea:

To finish off I had the ginger tea which was sweetened appropriately and it had a lovely fiery ginger taste which helped digestion and perfect for me because I don't drink carbonated drinks.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
hot chocolate :

My friend tried the hot chocolate which had a rich cocao taste that was not too sweet.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Next time there is a concert, I will be back to try the other sausages, hopefully they can offer a sausage platter with a choice of sauces just like they do in Germany.

沙薑雞 is not what it seems

Again the food in this area is weird.
The food is charged at Central prices but the food standards are like mongkok.
Ordered the the chicken in sand ginger sauce (galangal).
It just didn't look like your normal sand ginger chicken.
The chicken was bony, and the chicken thigh had a texture was like woody chicken breast.
