Appauling Mandarin Chicken Rice in Tin Hau

Previously I used to dine at the TST branch because the chicken there was good so when this branch opened I did not hesitate to go and try it when I saw the recent reviews.

The interior is basically the same and left how it was from the RED FRUIT TREE, one of the female staff that used to work at the RED FRUIT TREE was retained and now works under the Mandarin Chicken.

Anyway, the service was not that friendly and she grouped the people to sit in one area.

Rice in chicken oil:
I tried the rice first before trying the chicken or vegetables and I couldnt believe how salty it was!
How could the rice be saltier than the main dishes?
But considering the stingy portion of chicken, it was thoughtful of them to make the rice overly salty because when the chicken and vegetables were finished there was still a decent half bowl of rice left so the rice could not be tasteless~~
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chicken:

The portion of chicken was plain stingy, after removing the skin which was extremely fatty and thick there was not much left!!

The amount of chicken after removing the skin!

Vegetables:
This was blanched kale and there was nothing special about it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Soup:
The soup was chicken soup and tasted like soup made from boiling overnight chicken bones and meat.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Ginger puree sauce:
Ginger water with solid chicken oil floating
Ginger water with solid chicken oil floating

The chicken is supposed to taste nicer when it is dipped with ginger puree, but in the ginger pot there was no ginger puree left, it was just ginger water remaining with bits of chicken oil that had solidified and floating on top!~!
I also stirred the pot of ginger sauce and it was mainly ginger water and there was so little puree in it!
See video.

The picture below shows the ginger sauce at the TST branch which is much more decent.

Hainan chicken & Beef rendang @ Old Street Kobiteh

I did not have any expectations for this place because the previous reviews were negative and the food on the photos did not look that good.
When it initially opened it was packed but now there is no need to queue.

I expected it to be a been there tried that visit.

The items on the menu were standard items that you would find in a Singaporean restaurant ie Laksa, Hainan chicken, Rendang beef etc.
However the pricing for these dishes were slightly too expensive.

Ordered the Hainan style chicken and the redang beef.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★ Hainan chicken
When it arrived the portion of the chicken looked stingy and the rice just looked awful.
I have never seen the rice accompanying Hainan chicken as dark and as oily as that.
The rice bowl had grains of rice all over it and the dish of chicken had chicken oil surrounding the chicken. The chicken was disappointing because the pieces of chicken were all stuck together despite that fact that it has been cut already.
It just seemed like the portion of chicken was cut and left there for a while before serving.
The texture of the chicken was chewy and tasteless even though there was sauce to go with it and the rice was just oily and soft.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Rendang beef
The sauce was dark and thick and the beef had been marinated for so long that there was a strong beef taste in the sauce as well as the taste of the rendang sauce.
Apart from the coconut taste being too strong I thought it was the best Beef rendang I have tried.
However if it were not on the daily special it would seem a bit over priced.
The presentation of the beef could have been better without sauce on the side of the bowl too! ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Singmalay part 28: The Three Wishes at lazat:laksa

I found out about this new Singaporean restaurant in Wong Tai Sin which made me come because it offers three delights as a set for one.

For Singaporean food, the most popular dishes are buk kut teh, Hainan style chicken and Laksa, so if you want to try them all you have to share it with people.
However at this place they offer a cute set for one which comprises of a mini buk kut teh, mini bowl of Hainan style chicken and a mini bowl of Laksa.
The price of the set was quite reasonable too for around $4X.
☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Mini Laksa:
The Laksa was very spicy and it was topped with thinly grated carrots which I have never come accross before in a Laksa.
It also had tofu and sliced fish balls.
Overall it had basic laksa elements such as tofu puffs and sliced fish balls, however I felt their Laksa was localised.
☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Mini Hainan style chicken:
Cute portion and the sauces were not bad, the rice was slightly too hard.
☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Mini Buk Kut Teh
It was Teochew style because the peppery taste was extremely strong.
☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Kaya toast:
There was generous kaya spread in this, but it was slightly too sweet.
