So Sweet standards still silently same

This is my second visit since it opened, the Oriental orange is no longer served.
However there are a few new items such as bread and butter pudding and apple jelly.

There is a pick and mix section where you can pick any 3 desserts from their pick and mix range.
There are two prices either $11 or $13 each.

Picked six items:

Apple jelly, melon sago, bread and butter pudding.
Egg white in vanilla sauce, tofu cheese pudding, apple tart.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++=
Apple jelly:This is a new item that wasnt there last time, so picked it.
Although it was jelly it lacked the refreshingness of apple.
The jelly that was used was firmer and resembled konjac rather than gelatin.
It was slightly too sweet and the apple bits were too sweet as well.

Melon Sago:
This was also disappointing apart from the melon pieces!!
The sauce was basically purified mango with pieces of grapefruit in it, a blander version of "yeung ji gum lo".
In the sauce there was also bits of plastic too, and the waitor said it was odds and ends of sago?? hmm!!
Anyway, was offered another free dessert to replace it.

Bread and butter pudding:
It was piping hot drenched in alot of vanilla sauce with a few pieces of raisins on top,
Out of the above three, and for the $11 price range, this would be recommended.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Egg white in vanilla sauce:This has kept its standards, and still tastes as good as it was before.
Fluffly eggwhite in warm vanilla sauce with slivered crunchy almonds.

tofu cheese pudding:
This was firm and not too heavy, although the tofu could not be tasted, it was quite refreshing and decorated with a piece of strawberry.

apple tart
This has also kept its standards since my last visit, flakey and delicate, not too sweet.

Quality! noodles @ 渝酸辣粉

Came here randomly, and the food turned out to be great.
Allergic to that sort of chili, so picked the shredded chicken with noodles and an ordinary beef one.
For drinks, saw two interesting ones, so got the cucumber Soya milk and the Jasmine tea with bean jelly.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Beef noodles:
Very spicy even though the least spicy was ordered.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Shredded chicken noodles:
The broth was good, no MSG thirstiness after drinking it.
The shredded chicken was tender and pure white meat, no veins or bruises on it and the spring onion and cucumber was chopped finely too.
For the drinks, the cucumber soya milk was a nice soother to the spicy foods, however if it were less sweet it would have tasted more natural.
As for the Jasmine tea, it was also too sweet, that woman said it wasn’t that sweet, she lied!!
But overall that woman was really nice and smiling all the time.
It was nice drinking the Jasmine tea with jelly, the other one was jelly dessert with osthmanthus,, but I don’t really like flowers.
As for the other desserts it was interesting, they had pudding with chilli’s and herbs.

Pomegranite juice without the seeds @ Korea Well being house

KOREA Well-Being HOUSE is a very unique beverage joint, nearly all the joints are either local shops selling juices or Taiwanese style beverages.
The Korean variety in Hong Kong isn’t as popular as Japanese, currently available is the Korean BBQ, and then the more local Korean food at the Korean alleyway in Kimberly Street, TST.
After the popularity in Korean TV shows, we started seeing Korean cosmetics and skincare appearing in the market, eg Skinfood and Missha, Korean confectionery, chocolates and sweets packaged in cute boxes.
Now finally a drinks house in Wan Chai.

When I walked past it, it wasn’t as outstanding as the Taiwanese beverage shops, it was earthy, looking like a timber lodge house.
There was not a lot of lighting for the exterior or the shop or any fancy signs, when I stepped inside, I wasn’t quite sure what they were selling, the interior and drinks list were not that apparent.

Hurom slow juicer
Hurom slow juicer

On the left on the counter, I saw a juicer with samples of juice for people to try, so I couldn’t work out if they were selling juicers or drinks mixtures for people to make at home.
I looked at the drinks list and leaflet again and managed to see a cramped list with many drinks on it.
The A4 leaflet was more like a product list/beauty services leaflet than a drinks list.
The samples of drinks were tempting to try, but there was nothing covering them, they were exposed to the busy traffic, especially the smelly buses that past frequently.
For improvements, I think they should be placed at the counter, and pour them out as needed.
After looking at the drinks list, the variety was quite impressive. The staff told me that all the juices were made from fresh fruit bought daily from the supermarket.
Anyway, fruit juices are a health item, they claim to be healthier from the rest, especially the juices are not diluted or sugared and the JUICER they have is different from the ones on the market.
The Juicer employed is a HUROM SLOW JUICER, a slow-geared grinding mechanism that protects the vegetables/fruit from oxidation heat (from friction) which reduces nutrient breakdown.
Although it is called a slow juicer, the rate of juice produced is actually quicker than a conventional juicer.
It is interesting to watch it in action against a normal juicer, the video can be watched at the HUROM juicer site.

Pomegranate juice
Pomegranate juice

PoMeGrAnAtE jUiCe
The pomegranate juice was the most impressive, especially the structure of the pomegranate, the tiny seeds are hard to juice in a juicer.
This is probably why not a lot of places offer it, I was amazed because it was actually REAL JUICE, not watered down juice!!!!!!!!
Before I ordered it, I assumed it would probably be made from Pomegranate cordial diluted with water with a few seeds of pomegranate added into the drink.
The Pomegranate juice was just brilliant, it like eating a real pomegranate without the trouble of disposing the seeds. The taste is LITERALLY like a real pomegranate, with slight bitterness from the membranes found in the Pomegranate, making the taste complete.
Colour: The colour of the juice was not as ruby as the fruit seeds, it more pinkish like grapefruit.

yAm MiLk
Impressed by the first drink, I tried the YAM MILK with the knowledge it would be made from REAL FRESH YAM and not the powdered flavouring used in Taiwanese drinks.
Unfortunately, there is no picture for this drink, but it had a frothy layer of foam on top.
The taste was natural, with thick starchy residue of YAM in the liquid, it’s a bit like drinking the residue of the Chinese chestnut soup.
The YAM taste was a bit like cooked YAM, rather than the fragrant dessert type, and there were occasional hints of banana peel. I think the banana taste is the result of mixing fresh yam and milk together, apart from YAM milk, they also had YAM soymilk, which is also probably good too, but as it was my first time trying it, I didn’t want to have the soymilk overpowering the YAM.
Colour: the colour of this was natrual light brown, not purple, it is slightly lighter than the powerdered grains drink shown on the photo.

Last but not least I also ordered the drink made from powdered mixed grains, this was slightly different to what I was expecting, it wasn’t milky or viscous like the usual health smoothies.
It was slushy with bits of grounded grains in it, the taste was a little different, it tasted like those Chinese peanut crunchy biscuits and the Chinese “foh ma yan” drink made from Cannabis seeds.
The interesting fact is, Cannabis seeds and poppy seeds are edible!! Both made from drug plants!!
On their drinks list they offer over 30 different drinks, with the relevant health benefits.
The main drinks are split into milks, juices and soymilks. The number is a bit weird though on the leaflet it jumps from 3 to 21, so maybe the missing drinks are native Korean items that cant be found here.

The unique drinks worth trying are definitely Pomegranate, Peach, Grape and Kiwi especially when its nearly 100% juice and not watered down!~!
Although I think some drinks are slightly weird, basically the juices and milk, eg apple soy milk, tomato milk, watermelon milk etc!!

Drinks available: yam milk, black sesame milk, mixed grain powder drink, melon juice, pear juice, peach juice, apple juice, pomegranate juice, orange juice, grape juice, kiwi juice, watermelon juice, tomato juice, tomato milk, grapefruit juice, mango juice, apple-kiwi juice, tomato-watermelon juice, pear-apple juice, carrot-apple-tomato juice, pear-peach milk, melon soymilk, pear soymilk, peach soymilk, apple soymilk, pomegranate soymilk, orange soymilk, grape soymilk, kiwi soymilk, watermelon soymilk, tomato soymilk.

Try it before it gets famous! duck rice rolls! @ 第一腸粉專賣店

The location of this place is every interesting, bang right next door to an all day dim sum restaurant!

Before this place opened, people would go straight upstairs for rice rolls and other dim sum delicacies, however this place may be getting the new limelight soon.
There is another congee place before the bird and basket, so serious competition going on here!

I had planned to visit the place next door, but when I saw the reviews for this place, it got my attention even though it only recently opened with six reviews.
According to the reviews it was opened earlier this month (June 2011).
I was attracted to this place because of the rice rolls with shredded roast duck and the congee reminded me of the congee I had at North point.

Fung’s dessert: (My congee review there)
http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2163228

Almost all the places I have tried and read do not serve rice-rolls with duck.
Rice rolls with liver are rare too unless you go to rice roll specialists, but now other places are beginning to serve more variety due to competition that more dim sum places are opening.

This place is nice and simple specialising in rice rolls.

The menu offers a simple choice of: congee, rice rolls, white carrot cake and steamed rices.

For rice rolls there are eight different types at $15 per order.
The congee reminded me of the congee I had at North point, however the one at NP had more ingredients such as dried oysters.
The congee at this place is runnier than the one at North point, it contains only salted pork, dried vegetables and duck gizzard.
Although the congee wasn’t as strong, the salted pork gave it most of the flavour. There were not too many brittle bones in the congee. The duck gizzard in the congee was really soft, and the salted pork was a dark rose colour, but the meat was tender and fresh.
As a suggestion, the congee should be finished before trying out the rice rolls because after you have had the rice rolls the congee will taste tasteless.

Anyway for the rice rolls there are eight to choose from: 1) honey roasted pork 2) Hand cut diced beef 3) courgettes and mushrooms 4) signature flavour 5) pork liver in ginger sauce 6) spring onions and dried shrimp 7) shun tak sliced fish 8) shredded roast duck, all priced at $15 dollars.

They had a rice roll double choice (sheng ping) for $20, which was confusing, I assumed it would be like Chinese roast where you choose two items with the rice.
It was a bit strange how you could pick two different rice rolls because in a portion there are three, so they cant give you 1.5 rolls of each flavours.
In the end it turns out to be rice rolls made from both flavours.

I think for improvements if someone orders a double choice, they should indicate that both ingredients are mixed together in the rice rolls, because some do not go well together such as fish and beef. Luckily the double choice I ordered was OK to be mixed together.

Fish rice roll:
This one had the lightest taste, but you could taste the herbs in it, it was fresh fish not the frozen pieces, but the problem with this one were the fish scales and grounded bones.

Signature rice roll:
The filling looked really dark, but inside it was similar to the fillings found in chiu chow flour dumplings. Very crunchy and strong of spring onions.
The spring onions were still crisp in the rice rolls.

Shredded roast duck rice roll:
This was my favourite, and the first time I have tried it, the duck was attached to the lovely roasted skin, as well as duck there were tofu puff shreds in it giving it a meatier texture.
Mixed rice roll (Liver and dried shrimp)
Not quite what I was expecting, because I didn’t think both flavours would be combined into the rice roll, but as separate rice rolls.
Luckily the liver, dried shrimp and spring onions tasted really nice together.
The liver was not over cooked and remained juicy.
To finish off the meal, I had the “salted ribs in boiled in congee”, which are just the bones used to in their congee. The pork from the congee tasted really nice, so the ribs were expected to be good.
They were very bony, the meat that stuck onto the bones tasted really nice, but hard to eat if you do not know how to eat it.

Lastly I had the soy milk which was really good, it goes down the throat with a savoury taste leaving a sweet aftertaste.
However it is not very consistent because the first one I ordered was very strong as everything had sunk to the bottle of the jug, and the second cup I ordered was not so strong as it came from a full jug.
Anyway, expect queues soon! So try it before it gets famous.

They also make their own chili oil which also tastes good.
