Mandarin splash out @ The Mandarin Cake Shop

I have always wanted to try their cakes so I was really chuffed that I could splash $100 on their bakery with a $100 gift certificate from Openrice. It was tempting to try their cakes and their savory items, but in the end I decided to get the savory items and a donut because the cakes should be indulged there with a cup of nice tea.

Before I went, I checked their online menu and reserved the ones I wanted through phone.

When I got there my order was packed and ready to collect.
I really liked their paper bag and lavish packaging.

Custard donut
It was dusted with castor sugar and inside there was generous custard filling.
The sweetness was just right.

I was expecting the beef to be chunks but it was minced beef inside and the gravy was rich.

Sausage with XO sauce quiche
This was interesting because it was made with XO sauce which is Chinese.
The sausage used was proper western sausage, and the filling of the quiche was quite eggy and cheesy.
It also contained pieces of scallop which must have come from the XO sauce.

The Chinese donut

I have always been intrigued by Chinese donuts especially the shape which is so irregular and rough just like a massive truffle.

The Western ones are round and have an even surface which come in the form of ring donuts or the round ones which are filled in the centre or covered in icing or chocolate.

Although I have always wanted to try it, the size of it was big and if it didn’t taste nice then it would be a waste, especially when Chinese cakes are not really my cup of tea.

But anyway, someone happened to buy a box of them and could not finish them off.

The good thing was that they were already sliced in half.
I was surprised to see that it was very airy inside not like the western donuts.
The donut exterior was just like a normal donut, but the inside was incredible soft and the dough was extremely moist!
At first I thought the dampness of the dough was the frying oil, but it was not.

It is a pity that I do not have a picture of the donut intact before it was sliced.
The donut looks big but when you bite into it, it is actually like a sponge and compresses. The donut exterior was chewier than the western type.
Overall I still prefer the western donut, but the inside of the Chinese donut is nice in the sense that it is moist and similar to fresh airy bread.
However it has that Chinese frying oil smell.

As for the egg tart, it had that extremely strong buttery smell, and it crumbled and collapsed when I ate it.
