Queen of canned herbal jelly

There are so many dessert places in tin hau, but only came here because the traffic lights turn green so I could cross the road.

It was also empty which was another factor I tried it.

Basically, there was a menu with pictures and another black and white one which has the prices.

I picked the tofu princess which had tofu and banana according to the picture.
Ordered the dessert and the cocky snappy waitress asked for the money right away.

I wonder if this attitude is related to some robbery case last year which involved one of their staff taking the cash and doing a runner!
So they ensure their revenue by taking payment asap and locking it up tightly.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tofu princess $40:

Evidently canned grass jelly because they were unevenly cut and the coconut milk was too sweet.
The only fresh ingredient were the banana slices.
Definitely not worth $40, at other desserteries you can get much better desserts for $40.
The tofu was disappointing, it was just sweet tofu pudding!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
While I was there, one of the customers were choking and asked for tissue and the staff pretended not to hear the pleas, so the customers left angrily after eating.

Pasta with a Chinese fusion twist

Came here again because of the interesting fusion of fermented beancurd and pasta.

Basically it was lamb and pasta in fermented beancurd sauce.
In Chinese dishes lamb and fermented beancurd are always paired together so it should taste good.

The Matcha Azuki risotto was another interesting fusion dish too!
綠茶紅豆意大利飯
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Lamb pasta in fermented beancurd sauce:
羊肉腐乳意粉

To be honest $138 is a bit pricey for the pasta.

Anyway, the pasta was too creamy for my liking and the fermented beancurd sauce was not as strong as I would have liked.

According to the Chef, the fermented beancurd taste should be stronger and it should not have been so creamy, but that night it was not cooked by that Chef.
I think it would have tasted nice if the sauce was purely lamb and fermented beancurd.

Experience Olde Hong Kong in Sai Kung

As you know, it's a sin for me to dine in Sai Kung because it is mainly Chinese food that is not up to scratch or the type that I like.
If I do dine in Sai Kung, it is only for Western food!

I dined at Olde Hong Kong Tea House because it was special.

The decor was different and the dishes they served were worth trying.

The glasses they used had an interesting bubble at the bottom.

In the afternoon, they serve Chinese high tea sets!!

The menu is beautifully designed illustrating that old Hong Kong touch!

Lunch is from 12-4pm which is good for late people.

The food choices were classic and interesting if you check the Chinese version for:
-country duck meat fettuccine
-braised chicken noodles in soy sauce
-Traditional style baked fish intestines in custard

Here were the dishes I ordered:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mixed mushrooms casserole rice:
(yuen jup gau goo boot jai faan)

I ordered this because the name was funny, it was called boot jai faan ie served in a bowl!
It was a great filling and meatless dish of mixed mushrooms in light gravy paired with piping hot rice beneath it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Uncut bbq pork with rice:
The pork they serve for BBQ pork is different from other places because they use a different cut of pork called 梅頭肉.
It was hard googling the English for 梅頭肉 so I gave up.

It was a juicy slice of pork which had a texture similar to pork neck meat without being too fat.
The texture was springy and it was covered in light gravy that was heavily infused with Shaoxing wine.

Heirdoomed

I have always wanted to try this place because they seem to serve the food I like.
Heirloom Eatery & More is located on Hollywood Road near these funeral services, hence the sightings of Chinese Hearses parked nearby.

Chinese Hearse's are different to Western ones which are black and the Chinese ones are metallic blue.

Anyway, the restaurant environment is nice with the sun shining through, there is a bar table in the middle if you don't get a table seat.

There is seating upstairs as well.

The toilet which I did not check out is really nicely decorated according to the reviews.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Torta Bien Rica $90:

This was a toasted baguette filled with black beans, avocado, sour cream, tomato and jalapeno chili served with Sweet potato fries.
Not many places serve sweet potato fries which is one of the reasons to dine here.
Sweet potato fries are a popular thing in North America.
I loved the baguette because it was crusty and yeasty packed with so many flavours from the creamy avocado, tangy tomato and sour cream and the kick from the jalapeno chilis.
The black beans were mashed which mixed well with the other ingredients.
Finally the sweet potato fries were interesting because they were savoury and sweet.

For people who claim charity expenses on their tax bill, they should check their receipts because there is a compulsory $1 that goes to Hagar International Charity.
To be honest it should be made visible.

According to the Hagar International Charity website it says:
Heirloom joins Hagar in recognizing the important role that the food & beverage industry plays in economically empowering Hagar’s clients through education, on-the-job training, and career progression opportunities.
At Heirloom, customers now have the option of adding HK$1 to their meal, which will directly benefit Hagar International.
I was NOT given AN OPTION nor was I informed when I paid!!

3M - Celebrate [M]ickey and [M]innie at [M]axims

For Disney fans, they are going to adore these Mickey and Minnie mouse mousse cakes.
To protect these cakes during transportation, they have a piece of decorated card around the cake that serves as a design as well.

After it is removed, it looks like this.

Basically, both cakes have a dome shaped chocolate mousse cake on top which represents the head with two round pieces of thin chocolate stuck on it for the ears.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Minnie:

After slicing it, there are layers of cake, mousse and jelly.

I liked this cake because it was a mix of chocolate and strawberry mousse with soft layers of cake in the middle and the sweetness was just right.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mickey:

The Mickey cake was basically a double serving of chocolate mousse cake with crispy Valhrona chocolate which is rich but not too sweet.
A great cake for chocolate lovers.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Find a Mickey

I have tried this cake before so I knew I was going to like it.
The one I tried had a heart in the middle, whereas this cake has Mickey on the cross section of the slice.

Heart Cake:
http://www.openrice.com/english/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2300167

This cake is quite interesting because it is frosted with butter cream on top and it does not need refrigeration.

It is a dense and hard chocolate cake with chocolate butter cream on top decorated with coloured stars and Mickey mouse macarons.

The taste of this cake was really nice, the texture of the chocolate cake was firm and slightly dry which was balanced by the smooth chocolate butter cream which had a faint salty taste.

The chocolate had a strong rich cocao taste with a touch of bitterness so if you like proper Western cakes, then this the cake for you.

It is a fun cake to share because people will be impressed by the Mickey Mouse shape on the slices.

Champions

Champ Hot Pot (Tsim Sha Tsui)
Thanks to KC for treating us to a Hotpot!
Honestly, I was so honoured to be invited.
It was not just dinner, but we learnt so much from him.

Hotpot reviews are difficult to comment because it all depends on the broth and what they have on the menu to dunk in the pot.

The broth here was really cool, it was a whole chicken on top of a wintermelon, beneath the wintermelon there were cordecep flowers which is named similar to cordeceps but they are not cordeceps.

The broth was really good and we picked some pretty cool stuff too!
The scallops were for the hotpot, fresh and sweet, but don't put them in for too long because they will turn chewy.

Then there were beef balls which I was not keen but they were surprisingly nice, they were elastic with a strong beef taste.

Then the squid balls were impressive because it had salted egg yolk inside giving it extra flavour.

Pig's liver is my favourite but I never know when it is cooked properly, but KC showed us the signs to look for when its cooked.
Here the liver done by KC!
Yummy of course, just like the ones at Wai Kee, velvety and springy.

The FRESH fish gas bladder was a rare item, I've never seen it offered at other hotpots.
They were so fresh that they had a pearlescent pink colour.
I loved the gelatin sticky texture.

We also ordered my favourite beehive tofu which was very porous and absorbs lots of broth without over powering the strong soybean taste.

There were two types of dumplings: pork and foie gras.
I was not keen on the pork because it had pieces of fat in it but its meant to be normal.
The foie gras one fared better because it had pieces of water chestnut in it which gave it a sweet tone.

Most people have probably burnt their tongues by the end because hotpot food is hot, so I was glad they had icecream sandwiches to sooth the tongue.
