Beidouweng Hotpot Cuisine (Prince Edward)
Before I came here, I heard from non reviewers that their hotpots were quite premium.
The seafood is guaranteed fresh and they have lobster as well.
I tried the lobster tail which was meaty and springy flavoured by the strong broth and regretted not putting the head in as well.
The broth was strong with lots of chicken.
At the end it was great for blanching vegetables.
These livers were divine, they taste as good as the ones served at Wai Kee because the texture are slightly crisp and elastic.
I should have eaten more but it's difficult to judge how long to blanch it.
These dumplings were loaded with springy prawns and did not shrink.
The sea cucumber intestines were springy and delicate but it was hard judging how long they had to cook for.
Surprisingly the grilled items were good too especially the fish because it was so crispy and the chicken wings were nice and sticky with a hint of herbs and honey.
Although it might be late to celebrate CNY here, they are doing a Valentines deal which could be a good to avoid the crowd.

Premium hotpot with fresh seafood
New cake box design to absorb the oils
Kam Fung Restaurant (Wan Chai)
I was surprised they changed the design of the box, previously it was plain white with a red logo.
(I think the red and white box looks better because they look like the Chinese bakery ones in London.)
Previous box:
http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2268119
As for the chicken pie, it was really nice, there was a lot of filling.
I liked the buttery pastry and the sweetness from the chicken gravy.
Overall the taste was pleasant but I still prefer the chicken pie at North point.
The new box is cool because it absorbs the oil from the pie!
At first I thought the colour from the cake casing had gone onto the box, but then I realized the oil from the pie had gone through the paper casing to the box.
There was so much oil that the box has gone seethrough and you can see the patterns!!!
Next time I get these pies, I will let it stand longer so the box absorbs more oil!!

Loaded radish cake from Canton Room
Canton Room (Wan Chai)
At the Canton room, they have three types of puddings for CNY.
Scallop Chinese radish pudding:
Traditional CNY pudding:
Golden water chestnut pudding:
Anyway, I tried the scallop Chinese radish pudding.
As usual I heated it up in the microwave.
After heating it, I sliced it and found huge chunks of Chinese radish in the pudding.
This Chinese radish cake is loaded! There were so much dried shrimps and chunks of preserved sausages in it.
I loved this Chinese radish cake because the radish was chunky and crisp but not raw with sweetness.
For this particular radish pudding it would taste better panfried because this one is loaded with dried shrimps and preserved sausages that will taste even better panfried forcing out the flavours from the shrimp and preserved sausages.

Tonkatsu deluxe breakfast from McDonald's
McDonald's (Sheung Wan)
Since they have introduced the pork cutlet for the wraps and curries, they have also put it on the breakfast set.
For the Tonkatsu deluxe, you get scrambled egg, muffin, pork cutlet and a hash brown.
They also give you mayonnaise too which tastes the same as the one in the chicken sandwich.
The pork cutlet was nicely done, it was really crispy and the coating was about 2.5mm thick which tasted great with the mayonnaise.
The scrambled egg tasted good at this branch because the egg white and egg yolk was not mixed properly so there was a stronger egg taste and less of milk.

The wonder years
那些年炸雞 (Prince Edward)
If your Chinese or Taiwanese, then this snack joint will remind you of the Taiwanese film "You're The Apple Of My Eye".
To me it does not mean anything, and Western school life is so different.
I have attempted to watch this film but I found the first ten minutes really boring and it was in Mandarin so eventually I switched it off.
However, there is a TV series called The Wonder years with Fred Savage that Westerners could probably relate to.
I was attracted to this place because of the pear shaped potato, not because of the film or any memories it could bring.
I was surprised they had vol-au-vonts as well.
To start off, I had the potato croquette and the cheese ball, but it was so nice I had the cheese and sweet corn pie as well.
I have always wanted to try this place but as it was the summer, it was too hot on the streets to appreciate anything piping hot.
After trying it, I was so gutted I didn't try it earlier because I go past that place quite often.
The chicken is probably going to be good but it seems quite difficult eating chicken on the street.

Pear shaped potato croquette $12:
When she gave it to me, she asked if I wanted any tomato sauce but I went without because I wanted to try it on its own.
I was expecting purely potato but I was surprised to find cheese in the middle.
The cheese was heavenly and not the tasteless stringy mozzarella.
The potato tasted like instant mash which is fail proof complimented by the cheese and crispy breadcrumb coating.
It was also impressive that all their fried items did not have a rancid oil taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Cheese ball $4:
The cheese ball was delicious but at the same time I did not get any surprises because it tasted the same as the pear shaped croquette.
However if your on a carb diet, then I would recommend the cheese ball because the pear one has more potato.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Cheese and sweetcorn pie $14:
The size of this was slightly smaller than a McDonalds apple pie, and inside it was filled with that gorgeous cheddar cheese and lots of sweetcorn.
The taste was slightly sweeter for the pie because of the sweetcorn which was really juicy and each piece of sweetcorn bursts out with it juices.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Overall, the fried items are impressive and I hope that on my next visit, they will taste consistent.

Catfe
Catfe (Sheung Wan)
I was attracted to this Cafe because of the name Catfe located on the corner of holiday inn.
It was a little bit disappointing because there were not many cat related items inside apart from the logo and the cat ornament on the ledge.
At Catfe, they have non coffee drinks for people who do not drink coffee.
They had a cake cabinet.
Unfortunately, both seats were taken so I could not dine there.
I was intending to try both cakes but since I had to eat outside I only got one.
I got the tea one because the other one was not labelled.
I don't know what this cake was because there was no English, it was some sort of Lemon tea cheesecake.
Basically it was a mousse cake with a layer of tea jelly on top which was bitter, then there was cream and lemon peel on top which was also bitter.
I didn't really like it because most of it was fake cream.

Hot and Spicy, perfect for spicy thrills
Spicy Andong (Causeway Bay)
Thanks to Gary for bringing me along to this tasting.
This is a new branch of Spicy Andong because they have another branch in Mong Kok where the interior is really cool. They have padlocks hung on the walls and cute message cards attached.
At the Causeway bay branch, they also have these message cards and colourful interior.
Anyway here was what we had:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Basically for Spicy Andong chicken there is one with oyster and one without.
Spicy Andong Chicken:
Tasted quite similar to the one below but the taste was less fancy without the oysters but the spiciness was still there.
Spicy Andong chicken with oyster:
To be honest I prefer the one with oyster because there are more flavours in the dish and the oysters were plump and huge!
To begin with the oysters were quite spicy, but after a while they get even spicier after absorbing the sauce.
Luckily they offer a non spicy version.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Collagen salad
This salad is called a collagen salad because it has slices of pork trotters which are rich in collagen.
I liked the cool crunchy lettuce leaves tossed in tangy sesame sauce which is perfect for soothing the palatte after some spicy food.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Curry Toppokki with cheese
The curry toppokki was really cool because the usual sauce is spicy and not many places serve it in curry sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Steamed pork with spicy garlic sauce
The sauce looked innocently refreshing but it was devilishly hot!!!!!!
So beware!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled beef on lettuce
Nice chunks of beef paired with spicy kimchi.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Cheese and spicy minced pork pizza
The English menu does not indicate how spicy it was but this was another super spicy one!!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Clams steamed in jinro
I loved the golden metal teapot because you can pour soup out from the spout without the contents coming out.
It would be good if the alcohol taste was stronger.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pan grilled eel
A lovely plain grilled eel which lets you taste it in its most natural form.
The suggested way of eating it is putting the eel on the lettuces leaves with the sauce provided.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pan grilled ribs
Nicely pan grilled ribs which were thinly sliced.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
To To Bibimbap with onions and egg
This was my favourite because most bibimbaps come with kimchi and meat, but this was plain rice, egg, onion and seaweed.
After mixing it, the rice and onions were really fragrant. There is an extra side of finely chopped onions which had strong sesame oil in it which I added as well and it tasted so much more nicer.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Brown rice milk
The rice milk was lovely and not too sweet with a delicious roasted rice taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
On each table, there was a pair of scissors for the noodles which came in handy for cutting other pieces of food too.
