[McDonalds Hong Kong] $15 deal

$15 can be a lot of money depending where you are.
In HK, you can't get anything, not even a decent cake or a cup of tea.

At McDonalds they have a $15 tea set which their staff do not even know about because when I ordered, I had to show them a photo which I took at their restaurant.

After I showed them, they were fumbling with the POS to key in this order.

For $15, the deal was good because I could get a decent cup of tea which $15 won't buy me, and there was a bonus too, a choice of chicken wings, popcorn chicken or chicken nuggets with SQUEEZY CHEESE SAUCE!~

The tea was good because I got the teabag one and the chicken wings were crispy and spicy.
I also tried the popcorn chicken which were bitesized coated in crispy coating.

Openrice awards 2015

Went here a while ago to attend the openrice awards ceremony.

There was finger food and my favourite was the mini yorkshire pudding burger and the buffulo cheese which looked like a Swiss roll.
I liked the pipette which had balsamic vinegar to flavour it as you like.

Chaoshan delights at 粿煞好味

It just so happens that two Chaoshan eateries have opened around the same time and I was planning to go there for the vegetable tea.
I ended up going to this one first so it was my first experience having Chaoshan delights.

Here is the menu and what I tried.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Vegetable tea:

Previously tried a failed version at Tea academics which was sweet.
http://www.openrice.com/en/hongkong/review/wan-chai-the-tea-academics/2413382
The vegetable tea here was really nice and wholesome with finely chopped snow peas, vegetables, Chinese sausages, puffed rice, peanuts and glass vermicelli.
I really enjoyed it because it reminded of me minestrone but in Chinese form!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chaoshan ricerolls:

I have always wanted to try these because they look like umbilical cords.
There is a shop at Yuen Long that also serves these ricerolls.

I managed to try one at Fat Fat Snack in Sai Kung but it was plain compared to this one.
http://www.openrice.com/en/hongkong/review/sai-kung-fat-fat-snack/2277937
The one here was really tasty and silky with fried egg and delicious sauce and chopped vegetables on top.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Beef balls:

I am not a fan of beef but these were springy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Little rice dumplings:

The rice dumplings were really good because the sweet potato skin that surrounded it was chewy and inside there was juicy minced pork.
It was complimented nicely by their home made chili sauce.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Layered pudding:

This savoury snack was interesting because it was layered and savory topped with dried shrimp and squid which gave it a nice salty flavour.

Creative dishes at Fu Wah Cafe

I was on my way to visit the arts exhibition nearby so got the ferry from North point which landed me here.
There were not many eateries at Grand Waterfront Plaza.
I was supposed to dine at another place but the restaurant seemed weird so I walked out and then there was Tai Hing which is all over Hong Kong so I went here.

Initially I was going to order the noodles in ginger broth but it was sold out.

The female staff annoyed me as well which is why this place gets an OK and not a because she couldn't hear me so she was giving me the looks.
Anyway, I ended up having the braised e-fu noodles in red beancurd sauce with vegetables (213南乳粗mun齊伊麵)because I liked the creative combination.

When it came, I couldn't smell any red beancurd and the colour didn't have any hues of red or burgandy.

Good red beancurd is meant to have a lovely aroma.

As for the taste, it was really nice because each strand of noodle was flavoured by red beancurd but I would have liked it the noodle wasn't so soft.

On the next visit, I hope to try 738 fried red beancurd chicken.

I was also impressed by the XO noodles because you can choose different noodles such as flat noodles, udon, egg noodles or vermicelli to go with a choice of chicken, duck, beef, char siu and even prawns!

Back for more vegetable tea at 心夜來潮

Tried this place in April and decided to go again because I liked the vegetable tea.

The menu has changed and looks nicer.

Vegetable tea:

Previously tried this and really liked it so this time I got the LARGE size.
I didn't realize it was that big! oops!

The vegetable tea here was really nice and wholesome with finely chopped snow peas, vegetables, Chinese sausages, puffed rice, peanuts, glass vermicelli and dried squid too.

I really enjoyed it because it reminded of me minestrone but in Chinese form but on this visit it was a little too salty.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Salted crab, urchin, oysters with rice:

All of the delights are really salty so you only need a tiny bit to go with rice.
The urchin had a creamy bitter taste which was quite nice but the piece of crab was too tiny to get anything out of it.
The oyster is also nice and the saltiness makes the oyster taste even stronger.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Beef balls:

I didn't try them but my friend said they were really springy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Noodles:

They were chewy and very filling and the broth tastes the same as the vegetable tea above.

Tapas at Just-a-Restaurant

Went here to celebrate a friends birthday and it was nice that they arranged a big table.
It was a Saturday so there was free Sangria even if you just order one tapas dish.

We started with tapas followed by paella and roast suckling pig.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tomato, onion and white anchovies on toast:

The highlight of the toast was the white achovies because they were really soaked in vinegar.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Serrano ham, tomato on toast:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Spanish cold cuts platter:
(Serrano ham, chorizo, olive and Manchego cheese).

My favourites had to be the cheese and olives.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chili garlic prawns:

Springy prawns with aromatic crispy garlic.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chorizo with green apple:

I don't normally like chorizo but this was worth trying because they are thin slices with pickled apple slices that balance the salty chorizo nicely.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pacific manila clams with white wine cream sauce:

I was expecting a creamy sauce but it had a strong wine taste with lots of asparagus.
The clams were bursting with white wine sauce so it was really tasty.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Spanish octopus in garlic olive oil:

The octopus was springy with lovely olive oil and garlic flavouring.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Baked New Zealand oysters with onion and bacon:

didn't try this.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled king prawn seafood paella:

As a carbs lover, the rice was tasty because it has absorbed all the seafood flavours with a hint of tomato.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pan fried Chilean seabass:

The fish was silky and chunky and just tasted like cod.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Roast suckling pig:

The skin was crispy and the meat beneath it was tender.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Jar banoffee pie:

The banoffee was loaded with banana infused cream which tasted natrual.
