Korean Walnut shaped Taiyakis filled with red bean

韓國皇帝胡桃紅豆餅 Korean Walnut Cookie

I am not a fan of red bean paste but I decided to give it a try. The owner was really friendly and there were other items as well to try but since I am allergic to the Kimchi I just tried this.

The outer layer of this walnut snack was similar to the Taiyaki, so I expected it to taste soft and slighty tough on the skin with sweet red bean paste in the middle with the occaisional pieces of walnut.
For red bean lovers this would be a great snack because they are bite sized and if they are freshly done they taste nice warm as well.

North point's hidden dragon @ 四海遊龍鍋貼水餃專門店

This restaurant has been listed in my target list to try, however I have walked past it so many times I have never noticed it.

Firstly its menu is very confusing and from the outside it is hard to see what food they do.

Then recently I faintly noticed it, because they had a poster of snowflake ice, however it still did not draw my attention to look into it further, as the dessert was just an extension to their sets, and the picture still didn’t show me what food they did, so a bit risky to go in and have food because of their dessert. Usually I would do, if the dessert looks very good, but there are many snowflake ice specialists around.

Finally today, as the restaurant I wanted to have dinner was closed, and the weather was hot and sticky, and I was too lazy to walk, I decided to try this place.

The surroundings in the restaurant was very noisy, we sat close to the entrance, so it wasnt much cooler than the outside, also we could smell cigarettes and traffic fumes, perhaps a door would have been helpful???????

When I looked at the menu, I finally realised it was one of the restaurants I wanted to try, so it wasn’t that bad afterall. I wanted to try this place because I have tried 八方雲集鍋貼水餃專門店 at prince edward, and this is just another version of it, however the choice of dumplings are fewer but the ordering list is just as confusing as that one. So I give them credit for copying the ordering sheet with exact complicatedness like that one!

Anyway ordered noodles with soup dumplings, and the Jade pan fried dumplings with noodles (instant noodles from their picture).

The instant noodles was the first to arrive, indeed they were the instant noodles, but flatter in shape and springy in texture, next to arrive was the soup dumplings, good quality meat inside the dumpling, and then the pan fried dumplings came, very crispy, and folded into long retangular dumplings just like 八方雲集 instead of normal cresent shaped ones.

To compliment the dumplings there were four essential sauces on the table, ground garlic puree, chili sauce ( I really liked this concoction, it had whole black beans in it), vinegar and soy sauce.

Jellied worms if you dare to try @ 閩南小食館

This joint specialising in Mun Nam cuisine is located in the back streets of uphill North Point, opposite Saizeriya.
It has a grey feel to it and a distinctive smell, the people look different, and a weird language is spoken.

I have always wanted to try these jellied worms, but the minimum order is two, so I reckon I would be freaked out twice if I had them!!
I wanted to try, but I just couldn’t, so in the end I ordered the chicken rolls and the noodles in sauce.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Chicken roll:This is similar to the rolls in Chiu Chow cuisine, fried beancurd rolls with meat inside, the taste was nice, especially the dipping sauce, but there was lots of white fat in it.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Noodles in Sauce:To me, this was exactly like canned spaghetti, lots of sauce and overly soft noodles.
However the sauce was much better than the tomato sauce you get in canned spaghetti, it contained oysters, vegetables and fatty meat.
The sauce was slightly peppery and creamy.

Best congee filled with goodies @ Fung's Dessert

Oyster congee at Kau Kee was good, but congee here is amazing.

Review at kau kee:
http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=1968176
The congee here has two items that contribute strongly to the taste in the congee, pork bone with meat still on, semi-dried oysters and dried vegetables.
The colour of the congee came from the dried vegetables, and the pork meat was fresh and well flavoured, the meat fibres were distinct and pink.

Apart from these ingredients, the congee was packed with other goodies, such as preserved egg and chicken gizzards.

It was 55% congee, and 45% of the other items such as oyster, pork etc.

The shop next door also serves Congee with the same ingredients, however I found that shop too chinesey and this shop looked friendlier and inviting.

The only downside was the brittle pork bones.

The world of cumin spices @ 青藏牛肉麵

Whenever there is lamb, there is usually Cumin in it!
Apart from lamb, alot of their other dishes served there contained cumin too.

I was really looking forward to the Cumin fried chicken wings, but they have discontinued it!
Picture of the cumin fried chicken I was looking forward to from 愛食's review:

This is different to the current chicken wings they serve, because the chicken is cut from one of the wing bones and turned inside out and fried.

In the end, I ordered the noodles in spring onion sauce, beef noodles, fried beancurd roll, and Osmanthus wine dumplings.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Spring onion noodles with dried prawn:
Noodles in spring onion sauce wiv dried prawns
Noodles in spring onion sauce wiv dried prawns

It was very fragrant when it arrived, the smell of deep fried spring onions, and the dried prawns,
The dried prawns were slightly soft and chewy. Not as dehydrated as the dried shrimps.
The noodles were tasteless at first, it needed heavy and rigorous mixing with the sauce at the bottom.
The noodles were dense and clumped together, which was tiring to pick up with chopsticks.
Overall, this was very good, but my hands were very tired afterwards.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Beef noodles:
The soup had a layer film of oil on top, and the cumin was very strong.
Nothing spectacular about it.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Fried beancurd roll
This was a bigger version of the ones found in Chinese restaurants, it was flatter and bigger in size, and cut into four quarters, filled with the usual julienne carrots and black fungas.
Slightly too oily, but after the addition of vinegar and chilli, it was ok.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Osmanthus wine dumplings
I have never tried this before, but it turned out to be OK, the Osmanthus flavouring was subtle.
I felt the smell was like flowered scented bath liquid or soap.
There were lots of cute flowers and the dumplings were slightly too soft for my liking.
The osmanthus soup was slightly thick and a little too sweet.
The spoon for the dessert was interesting, on the bottom side, it looks like an ordinary chinese spoon, and the top side, it is rounded.

The can of coke had a cute design, the bamboo pan that they used for the bill was interesting too, reminded me of those pans in the market selling vegetables and Vietnam.
Cute design
