Apple fritter @ Starbucks

Finally had a spare moment to try the apple fritter, the actual product is slightly different to what I was expecting, after referring to Wikipedia, the Starbucks version is an American one as opposed to the British one.

The british one is apple dipped in batter and fried, and the american is more like donut texture, and then covered in icing.

Tasted quite nice, but just like a donut to me.

The hygiene could have been improved, there was a little bug flying to devour my donut, I tried to usher it away with my hand, and my fork went flying, a bit embarassing if I hadnt stopped it, it would have probably hit the person infront.

Cream cheese and apple bun @ A-1 bakery

Rum, apricot and walnut butter slice:
Rather tasteless, oily and dense, the oil could be seen on the packet.
There were not much nuts or apricot.
Cream cheese and apple bun:Crunchy milk top like the milk buns, hollow bun with slight apple pieces and cream cheese, not two sweet.

Playful waitor @ Rockschool

Came for lunch, not many people as expected, the price was suspiciously lower than other pub foods.

The restaurant was half empty when we arrived, so sat down on a four people table, but we were told to sit on a two persons table.

Anyway, ordered two sets: pork chop with apple and mash, and fish with wasabi sauce.

First came the bread with olive oil and vinegar, an italian starter which is quite a bonus because not many pubs serve it or occaisionally serve it.
After finishing the bread, there were some crumbs infront of me, and the waitor cleaned it for me using my napkin, I was impressed he remembered I didnt have a napkin and gave me an extra one.

Then came the salad and soup, and the waitor kept insisting ladies first, so placed my soup down first,
Same with the mains, he always laid my plate down first, as well as trying to mesmerize me with his eyes!
Back to the food, the carrot and coriander soup had lots of chopped coriander in it, and quite watery, but strong in coriander taste, as for the salad it contained yummy feta cheese.

As for the mains the wasabi sauce did not taste of wasabi at all, it tasted of mint, and the pork chop was over cooked, but the mash was nice and buttery.

Finally the dessert was the best, tasted as good as the banana muffin at banyan tree, but firmer and dense.

The drinks were refillable too, however service can be slow sometimes, and the portions were a bit small too, even with soup, bread, mains, dessert and drink, the feeling was JUST full.

Lychee mousse cake @ Jam Bakery

Since I saw photos of the lychee mousse cake, and the apple passionfruit cake, I have been wanting to come here.
I finally did, and got the apple and passionfruit mousse cake, there were other ones I wanted to try too such as raspberry mousse, baileys, and hazelnut cake.

But with those ones, you can usually imagine how it will taste, so I got another German cheesecake to try too.

For the apple and passionfruit cake, it was two layers, one layer of apple mousse, and one layer of passionfruit mousse, overall it tasted refreshing, with thin apple slices on top and a raspberry.

As for the cheesecake, it reminded me of the cheesecakes at Marks and Spencers with with sultana's in it. The cheese was not too over powering.

Refreshing apple cucumber drink @ Yue Mic Ka

As mentioned in my last review I would come back for the cucumber and apple drink.

For some restaurants, the first visit is a bit chaotic, as the menu isnt that clearly laid out, so you order food for the sake of ordering, then after you take away their menu to study, you see things that were better or sets with things that you would of ordered.

Anyway after the first visit, the apple and cucumber tea was one of the things I missed out on their menu, so this time came back for it.

I was very impressed as it was not syrupy or artificial in taste.
The taste of cucumber was more prominent than the apple.

The starter which was white carrot and fish soup was quite good too, the soup was slightly over salty but probably it was meant to be a sauce rather than soup it was over flavoured.

Etienne's award winning cakes @ Epoch

Came here especially for the Marike, before trying it, I wasn’t aware of its ingredients, however I couldn’t taste the coriander in it, but it didn’t taste as nice as I imagined it to be.
Marike: Apple and coriander jelly with passion fruit, in a dome of white coconut mousse
Piemontios: Hazelnut mousse cake with almond, white chocolate cream and caramelised apples

Marike:
The outer coconut mousse was creamier than I would have liked it, its texture was more like whipped cream.
The filling was slightly sour.

Piemontois:
This was actually the best, it was coconuttier than the Marike, but not in a creamy way, the outside of the cake was dusted with coconut.
Inside were layers of cake and cream, and pieces of stewed cinnamon apple that were not stewed too soft.
Although the cake description says caramel apples, it tasted more like cinnamon apples.
As well as the apples there were pieces of almonds giving it a slight crunch.

So sweet desserterie by Wong cho nam

Decided to feast out on my desserts cravings because of the interesting variety offered just like Sweetacy, however the choice here is much bigger and you can mix the Western and Chinese selections together.

Previously the pictures of the Oriental oranges, egg whites and apple tart caught my attention so came here just to try them out. The picture of the shop looked Japanese, so before I came, I didn’t know what was to be expected from their menu. It would have been great if they had an English menu too.

Basically there is a sweet platter that allows you to select three items, so I chose three items of mini size for the platter and one full size for Singapore egg white dessert.

My sweet platter: Flakey apple tart, Bread pudding with vanilla sauce, Oriental Orange.

The Singapore egg white was the first to arrive, it arrived in a cup, and the whole dessert reminded me of hot chocolate with marshmallows on top. This dessert was basically a cup of hot vanilla sauce, with egg whites on top. The vanilla sauce was very pleasing, not too sweet at all, and warm with the fluffy egg white. The sauce itself was not thick, almost drinkable as the taste was light. I think served as a drink seems good too, there were slices of toasted almonds on top drizzled with chocolate sauce which gave the egg white some notes of chocolate and toasted nutty flavour.
It was quite good to start off with a warm and light dessert then moving on to the sweeter ones.

The sweet platter arrived, and I tried the bread pudding first, this tasted very sweet (over sweet on my opinion), and very strong in egg taste. Then I tried the apple tart, apart from the egg white, this was also the best, flakey filo paper thin pastry in thousands of layers. Lastly I had the orange, this was also good, but too sweet, the liquor in it was good, however I found some hair on the edge of the cup, it is in the main picture too, but clearer in the close up pic. Comparing my Oriental orange with the pictures before, it seems I am missing a blueberry garnishing!
I quite liked the Orange, but rather syrupy, now I am curious to soak orange in Brandy syrup to see how it tastes.

The staffs there were ok. The young female one tried to be helpful and introduced me to the Chinese desserts such as glutinous wraps and mango based desserts, however these happen to be things I do not like!
I asked the young female waitress what the sauce was for the Singapore desserts, so doing her job, she asked the chefs, however I thought the chefs were a bit rude in answering her, she was doing her job anyway.

I was contemplating on ordering another round of apple tarts and egg whites as it would be along time before another re-visit; then the young guy asked if I would be interested in ordering the “Heart too Soft”, I was definitely not interested in that one either, as this is a common dessert served all other in HK. He then suggested some other thing “sum fa lo fong” wrapped with Filo pastry with apple inside, so I decided to try that too.

However this one took ages, it was ordered at 7.34 pm and it arrived at 7.59, so around 20 minutes for it to be baked.
The presentation of the dessert was quite good, all of the fruit garnishing matched.
Taste wise it was ok, basically just apple and sultanas wrapped in flakey filo pastry.
I think I would have preferred a second round rather than the recommended dessert.

Found out this joint was opened by Wong Cho Lam and if he is present you can take pics with him, as if!
