Abalone and conch set @ SuperStar restaurant

Chinese is not really my favourite cuisine to have unless all the food is up to scratch.
The major problem is that in Hong Kong, you would think being in a chinese place you can get good chinese food anywhere, but it seems that only the expensive places serve good food, whereas in England there is so much competition that it tastes consistently good anywhere.

Ordered the Abalone and conch set for 6 people, the set consisted of: half a roast suckling pig, 6 baked stuffed conches, stir fried prawns with flaxseed, beancurd rolls and pearl dumplings, steamed fish with sweet picked veg, chicken and sharksfin soup, chicken and grounded ginger sauce, scallop and kale fried fried and dessert.

For maxims, I do not have any expectations because the food is just so-so.
However I did expect the conch and abalone to be good as they were the highlights of the set, and the rest of the dishes are just fillers to make the set worth its price.

Roast suckling pig: presented nicely but too fatty.

Baked conches: This was a conch shell stuffed with chopped up conch meat in Portuguese sauce.
The filling was slightly spicy and coconutty, with pieces of conch meat mixed with Portuguese sauce and potato

Stir fried prawn and flaxseed:
This was a medley of prawn, courgettes and flaxseed, slightly oily, but this is chinese food, the taste wasn’t that strong either.

Beancurd rolls and pearl dumplings: both were rather soggy, the pearl dumpling is basically a chiu chow dumpling with translucent skin, however the skin at the bottom was too thick and chewy.
Both tasteless and boring.

Steamed fish and sweet pickled vegetable: same as any steamed fish.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Chicken and sharks fin soup:
The broth was clear and the chicken was over boiled.

Abalone and mushrooms:
The abalones were slightly too hard and overall too much oil in the dish that the lettuce reeked of oil

Chicken and grounded ginger sauce:
This was better than expected, although it was too salty, the sauce was rich and generous.
However it was just too oily only.

Scallop and kale fried rice: too greasy and tasteless

Dessert: red bean sweet soup
Something that I do not eat, so cant comment, but others said it was bitter due to the dried grapefruit peel.

Overall, I only like the stuff conch and chicken in ginger sauce, and next time I reckon I would be better off ordering ala carte items.

Conning foreigners @ 名苑酒家

Originally I was not going to review this place, but I felt I should warn tourists or non chinese speaking people.

Food:
Ordered rice with roast meat, tasted nice and generous pieces.
It was surprising for sauces they used imported ones.

Anyway, just wanted to advise people who do not speak chinese not to ask the waitors to recommend food, because they will recommend the most expensive items such as Sharks fin etc.
There was a tourist who was eating by himself, and when he asked for the bill he was shocked the total was $120 ish!

So it just shows how greedy chinese are, not just restaurants, even at the markets where they take advantage of anyone who dosnt look the part!

Absolutely rubbish @ Urawa

Was given a flyer when I walked past, so studied the variety for the All u can eat lunch buffet. It costs $160 per person plus 10% service charge.

For that price, you can get reasonable all you can eat food at places such as Kaneda and this place in Central.
I chose this menu, because the menu was quite extensive, eg sea urchin handroll, goose liver on toast etc.

When I sat down, there were not many patrons there, the waitors laid our table with sauces and green tea.
I looked at the All u can eat menu, it was so flimsy, it was sheets of paper inserted into a plastic album, it had English, Japanese and Chinese, and it was hard to turn the pages as they kept sticking together.
The English-Chinese translations were a bit messed up, some meanings were different.

Anyway like any All you can eat places, I was expecting some pieces of paper for you to tick or write which dishes you want.

At least 4 items were not available, it should have been taken off the list or before we sat down we should have been told.

Unavailable items:
Spicy whelk meat
Pineapple and pumkin salad
Scallop cutlet
Goose liver on toast

When items were served, some items were served sparingly, only piece of surf clam with generous pieces of other sushi.
For the sea urchin handroll, only one was served per order.

If they had two prices for lunch and dinner, they should have separate menus instead of misleading people.

Ordering was difficult, I had to flick their flimsey booklet and order, usually the first round, you want to try everything, but the problem is their booklet pages are stuck together and it was a task trying to remember what to order.

The translations were messed up too, some of the chinese and english were different.

The menu was slightly misleading too, because some paid items were also on the all you can eat page, but you get charged for those items.

The fried items came first, some were overfried, especially the tofu, looking like a cochcroach. The banana tempura was worth trying.
The salmon sushi was not that good, because there was still silver membrane left on it.
The clams were totally tasteless, despite it was presented nicely with fake sharksfin.

The congee was ok.

Overall the environment was ok, the staff were ok, only the availablity and menu was misleading.
The price was too expensive considering the low range of choice.

The paper lantern was interesting, the paper slowly ripping off leaving the lightbulb.
