Only the dessert and drink was good at Q1

Went here especially for the pandan desserts and avocado smoothie.
The attitude of some of the staff are a bit rude so expect that or don't go.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
avocado smoothie:

Thick and creamy with a rich savoury avocado taste.
I liked it because it was not sweetened.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Tomato Crab Soup Pho:

The herbs were fragrant but the soup lacked crab taste and the noodles were too soft.
The Vietnamese sausages were generous thick slices but they were unfortunately a bit too rubbery.
The blood jelly cubes were really dark and looked like it had blood poisoning or have been stewed for days.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Vietnamese style crispy bun:

The pickles were too sweet.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Pandan and mung bean dessert:

The dessert was surprisingly good because the mung bean paste was really silky and not starchy but the pandan jelly was a bit too chewy.

Purple potato smoothie [Banh Mi Bakery]

I know this place specializes in Vietnamese fare but I was there for the sweet purple potato ice slush and the avocado ice slush.
There was only sweet potato ice slush available when I got there which was good because I couldn’t have decided between the avocado and the sweet potato anyway.
Apart from Vietnamese food, it was great that they had quiches as well.
The décor was really nice and relaxed with Western elements.
From the outside, it looks like a wild western cowboy restaurant because of the wooden background and white letterings.
Ordered the slush, mushroom quiche and a Vietnamese baguette so that I could compare it to other places.
The food took quite a while to come. Normally I am not bothered but there happened to be crying babies nearby which made want to leave ASAP!
Food is expensive and there is a 10% as well.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Vietnamese baguette:

Frankly this was over priced.
The pate was spread thinly on the baguette and the Vietnamese sausage slices were at most 3mm thick and the baguette was a bit burnt on the top.

The pickles were not pickled enough and I found them sweet.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mushroom quiche:

The crust was too buttery but the filling was nice and cheesy with a few thin slices of mushrooms.
I don’t think the quiche is made by them but sourced from some suppliers.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
sweet potato ice slush:

The ice slush was quite nice on a hot day with a nice sweet potato taste that is evidently made with sweet potato flavouring but at least it tasted natrual.

Great Vietnamese rolls at Bolaven Café

There used to be a branch of Bolaven in Wan Chai but sadly it closed before I got a chance to try it.

I don't often have Vietnamese food because Vietnamese food in general does not appeal to me.

The rice paper roll appealed to me because it had apples and pickles in it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Apples and pickles rice paper roll:

Although this is not authentic Vietnamese rolls, I really enjoyed it because they used apple instead of traditional ingredients.
Without the sauce, it is sweet because of the apples with some tangy tones from the pickles.
When the savoury sauce was added, the taste was amazing because it made the rolls sweet and savoury. It had a lovely crunch from the pickles, apples and lettuce which was held together by the lettuce and chewy rice wrap.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Definitely returning for the other rice rolls!!!

Healthy Vietnamese baguettes

I remember getting a flyer from this shop a while ago but as I was having dinner I did not stop by and try.

Finally tried it and the baguettes were surprisingly good.

While I was there, someone ordered the whole baguette which only costs $69, fit for a few people to share.

I went for the mini which only costs $19.

Next time I am going to try the toasts which has scrambled eggs and vietnamese sausage.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Vietnamese French baguette:

The baguette was filled with liver pate, Vietnamese pork roll, pork floss, tomato, carrots, pickled cucumber and cilantro.
Chili slices are optional.
As an expat I love baguettes and this was great because it was filled with lots of ingredients.
The optional chili was surprisingly good because it balanced well with the pork belly and the pickles made it refreshing.
The baguette was lovely and fresh, soft and crusty.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Spring rolls:

The Spring rolls were crispy and perfectly fried.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Salty lemon soda:

Had this refreshing drink and it was amazing because it was not sweet which is how it should be.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Salty lemon soda with lime:

This is basically the same as above with lime added.
I preferred this one because it had more flavours and complexity.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled meat roll:

Lastly I had the grilled meat roll which came with sweet sauce.
It is a great snack for meat lovers but I am not keen on meat.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

I will be back to try their vegetarian baguettes and toasts.

A new Vietnamese eatery

華越小食 (Wan Chai)

This shop was opened a while ago and there was no one eating there so decided to try it.

Again, when one person goes into an empty restaurant, people will follow!!!

Basically they serve Vietnamese noodles, cart noodles and rices.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Vietnamese lemongrass chicken with rice:

I suspect the chicken was fried twice because it was tasteless and dry.
Since the joint was new, I suspect it was leftovers that was not sold the previous day.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried pork neck with rice:

Luckily, this tasted better, the pork neck meat was extremely thinly sliced and it was lovely and crispy with a strong garlic taste.

Baby lotus roots salad

I was in the area so tried this shop because they had baby lotus root salad.
The last time I had it was at a Japanese restaurant where there was only one as a decorative element.

The lotus roots are really cute, they are like thin rods with six capillaries.
They were crunchy drenched in delicious sweet garlic sauce.

The boneless Thai feet salad was also good but it was a bit too spicy for me.

After I left, there was a local TV station filming that shop.

Vietnamese Butterlicious fried chicken at KFC

I went to KFC to try their new Vietnamese Butter chicken which is meant to be Vietnamese style.

They had the set for $38.6 which includes a Japanese curry, two pieces of chicken, Portuguese tart and drink.

At the time of ordering, they did not have any Vietnamese Butter chicken or Portuguese tarts so the chicken had to be freshly fried and the Portugese tarts were from a fresh batch.

I was actually quite glad they ran out of Vietnamese butter chicken because the fresh batch should taste nicer.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Vietnamese Butter chicken:
When it came, the smell of butter was strong.
It reminded me of the the cheese one they had earlier because there was some yellow coloured powder on the coating.

The chicken was fried just right and extremely hot because it was just taken from the fryer.
The chicken inside was juicy and soft.

The overall taste was really nice because you could taste the butter and garlic on the coating but the intensity of the garlic was not as strong as the type that you get in garlic bread.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Japanese curry and rice:

It was the standard Japanese curry sauce with diced vegetables served on rice.
The reason I liked it was because they did not use the pearl rice.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Portuguese tart:

The tart filling was very soft as expected because it had been freshly baked.
There was nothing wrong with the Portuguese tarts but they are just not my cup of tea.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Drink:
A drink was included and it was surprisingly fizzy because the ones I get from KFC are usually flat!
