[Review] Pieminister

Pieminister was on my list to go because of the way they present their pies.
It is pie served on top of mash with gravy, optional minted peas, cheese and crispy onions.

They started off making pies in Bristol and they are so popular that they have joints all over the place with a few in London.

Expect to find queues at the Farringdon Branch on Leather Lane.

As it was December, decisions were hard because they had Festive pies as well as the regular choices so I was spoilt for choice.

All the pies, mash, minted peas and gravy can be seen behind the cabinet.

In the end I ordered the Mistle Moo Pie (beef steak, port and bacon) and opted for Mothership which is pie, mash, minted mushy peas, Cheddar and shallots.
To my disappointment, they did not serve tea although they had water to offer but the tap for the water was severely broken and no staff were free to help so I had ask a diner for assistance.

The pie was just as good as expected, there were chunks of beef inside the pie in rich port gravy.
The cheddar, shallots and gravy all went well together so I can't wait to come back and try their other vegetable pies as they have some creative pies like the Heidi, Saag pie-neer and Kevin.

[Review] Lovely pies at Young Vegans

I have heard of Young Vegans a lot but didn't really know it was a pie shop until recently.
When I found out that they served Vegan pie and mash decided to give it a visit.

The shop is easily missed because it is right at the back but the good thing is that they have a few seats inside and there are tables outside.

Seitan and ale or the Aussie vegan mince pies were my main choices because pies with gravy are usually beef.
According to their insta, the steak is seitan while the Aussie vegan uses mince.

Unfortunately when it was my turn to order, both the labels for these pies were turned over so I thought they would not refill them so I ordered the Cheeseburger instead.
Other pies that were available were the Chick'n Katsu, Chick'n parmigiana and the Sweet and sour chick'n.

When I got my pie, it was satisfying to see it drizzled with gravy and topped crisp onions.
Instead of mash, I had mac and cheese.

Although it was not the pie of my choice, the cheeseburger was actually delicious because of the flavours like gherkin and cheese inside but the seitan beef patty let it down a bit because the texture was rather rubbery as it was all compacted into one patty.

The vegan mac and cheese was quite comforting in the sense that it was creamy and cheesy yet light.

It was good that they serve tea but it wasn't very full.

After I finished my pie, decided to go in and look at the menu again but to my surprise the pies were refilled so I was a bit gutted that they didn't tell people they were going to be refilled.
Saying that the cheeseburger pie wasn't bad so I didn't make a wrong choice.

To summarize, I would definitely recommend their pies and the flavours really blend in nicely as they have taken popular pub favourites like sweet and sour and put it in a pie.

[The Leah] English comforts in Causeway Bay

Since Excelsior closed, English food in CWB is scarce. Enter THE LEAH which offers English comfort food. It is located at Lee Gardens where you take the lift from the elevators near PRET, so you have to resist not going into Pret as well because that is English!

When you get there, you have to walk through a lovely garden before you get to the restaurant and there is a play area for kids.

I loved the huge deck chair which reminds me of the beaches but the one here is much bigger and covered with artificial foliage.

As you an imagine, everything on the menu is a must eat for me because they had pies, desserts which were all popular English items.

The bigger items like Beef Wellington and Dover sole have to be ordered in advance. Being raised in a seaside town I miss my Dover soles which look like flounder fishes but slightly different.

It was good that we came in a group so that we could order more dishes.

Here were the dishes that we had:

================
[Scotch egg and Soldiers]:

This dish is the ingenious marriage of egg and Soldiers with the Scotch Egg. Egg and Soldiers is a breakfast dish where a soldier is a thin strip toast that resembles soldiers on parade. Other versions include marmite Soldiers and Vegemite Soldiers in Australia. Seemingly a simple Egg and Soldiers dish is made fancy with the Scotch Egg so this dish is the best of both worlds.
================
Scallop & Black Pudding:

Black Pudding is a blood sausage served for breakfast and I liked the way it is used to compliment the scallops which gives it a richer flavour.
================
For pies, there was chicken and Fish pie.
It's a bit difficult to explain, but there are two different types, the shortcrust and the ones topped with mash like Cottage and Shepherds etc.

[Chicken Pie with leek and bacon]:
Another classic, delicious creamy chicken with smokey bacon in a flaky crisp pastry.

[Fisherman's pie]:
Also another classic pie with creamy seafood beneath silky mash on top.

================
Beef Short rib & bone Marrow Gnocchi:
The pieces of gnocchi were huge which made them great for accompanying the sauce and the beef was tender and soft.

================
Butterbean and Aubergine Casserole:

The butterbeans were surprisingly flavourful because it tasted like a Mediterranean dish with cumin and spices as well as vegetarian chili con carne.
================
Beef Wellington:

Interestingly, the Beef Wellington is quite popular in Hong Kong and no exception here with quality tenderloin beef wrapped in pastry with tasty mushrooms and parma ham.
================
Dover Sole:

I love Dover Sole so we were lucky it was in stock as this fish is sooooooo hard to get in Hong Kong. The fish is similar to the flounder found in Asia. Anyway it was cooked in caper butter so the fish was moist and soft.
================
Green Beans and Shallot butter:

================
Moving on to dessert, we had the trifle and apple pie.

Strawberry & Sherry Trifle:

I love trifle so I am so glad that this place serves it as well as Marks and Spencers.
The base is loaded with strawberries and the cream is light and fluffy laced with vanilla seeds.

Granny Smith apple and nutmeg custard:

The apple pie had chunky pieces of apple complimented by nutmeg custard sauce which is something different to your usual custard however I would prefer to have some real thick nutmeg custard but not ice cream.
================
Overall, everything was really good and just like the food in UK with a slight modernization but then if you have been dining in the UK, lots of dishes have been reinvented.

[Pacific Coffee] 2015 Christmas Cherry Pie

I was mainly captivated by the cherry tart and ended up getting the cake as well.
+++++++++++
Cherry pie:

Got the cherry pie because I love cherries but it seems like a hybrid between a pie and tart.
It’s more like a tart because it has weird a custard layer beneath the cherries which doesn’t make it a pie, while it looks visually like a pie, the pastry was tart pastry which was hard butter crust.
Anyway, the custard ruined the taste and made it too sweet hence it didn’t taste like a pie.
+++++++++++
Strawberry vanilla cake:

The chocolate sponge was good but the vanilla mousse was a bit sweet like white chocolate and there was not much strawberry taste.

McDonald’s new pineapple pie

Tried the new pineapple pie because I haven’t tried it before.

To my knowledge the pies that have been launched before in HK are red bean and taro.
Hopefully they will launch peach as well because that would taste quite nice.

pineapple pie:

The pineapple pie filling is the same as the apple in terms of consistency and viscosity.
It has the same sort of sweetness as the apple but it has small chunks of pineapple instead and the pineapple taste is not that strong.

Gweilos unite at Central's Gweilo Bar & Grill

I have always wanted to try this place for food but never got round to it.
Finally went with a buy one get one free dinner given at the escalators.

The decor is nice.

The dinner menu.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Salad:

A simple caesar salad.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Steak pie and chips:

The chips were stacked so nicely like jenga bricks.

It was served with a side of Branstons pickle and a pickled onion so I was quite happy that I did not have to visit a chippy for the pickled onion.

The chips were surprisingly good because they were not too crispy with a soft fluffy centre.
As expected the steak pie was amazing with a lovely puff pastry and delicious beef gravy inside with chunks of beef.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Typhoo Tea:

To finish off I was delighted with tea because they used Typhoo Teabags which is British.
It was strong and aromatic!
