Taro puffs at Tin tin vegetarian

Walked past and the taro puffs looked good so decided to get one.

I thought they were $4 each but they were $7 which made them quite expensive.

They were too hard for my liking and the filling was a bit boring because it had Chinese radish and it lacked gravy.

Round 1: Magic mushrooms

I came here especially for these magic mushrooms, they won't send you on a trip but they will sure tantalize your tastebuds.

They are basically buns filled with chopped mushrooms and truffle coated in edible brown powder to look like they were just plucked from the soil.

These buns were delicious with warm mushrooms in the middle covered in fragrant truffle sauce.

Apart from the food, this restaurant was surreal, the menu is like a catalog of pastel bowls and dishes with food.

The presentation is wonderful, food is presented like art and in a Western way.

The bowl with flies on it as part of the design will make the elderly or food inspectors look twice which they probably don't find it amusing, the same as carrying a fake gun into the airport.

Anyway, everything was good but the bill took a while to arrive because I messaged my friend who was also dining there to say bye but I was still there for quite some time.

He later messaged me to say that his bill took ages to come after requesting it too.

皇朝點心專門店 need improvement

Tried this new dim sum shop on Kwong Wah Street.

As usual, you are given compulsory tea that is charged.
The Jasmine tea tasted nice which was ok.

The tables are laid out like such with orders placed behind the seat.

The rice with spare ribs and chicken claws were too salty and oily, and it was annoying that I only got one claw and the rest were fatty pork pieces.

I also had the cow's stomach which was too sweet!

Affordable dim sum at Ding Dim 1968

Tried this new dim sum restaurant on Elgin road opposite Vbest Tea House which used to be the only Chinese restaurant there.

The prices between Vbest and Ding dim 1968 are very different. There is no 10% service charge but there is a $3 per person tea charge.
Dim sums cost around $2x per basket which is cheap dining in Central.

The restaurant was quite small but evidently successful because it was almost 99% full.

Nice interior and the staff wear Tshirts printed with Ding Dim 1968.

Cute model trolley.
1968 marked the years when the master chef started his dimsum career, nearly half a century ago..

It was impressive that they had a website and Facebook with the menu on there with pictures.

I think they should have a teapot on each table so that diners can refill tea themselves as the staff were quite busy.

Fried dumplings with shrimp and foie gras:

The fried prawn dumpings with foie gras were my favourite because it was light and crispy and the foie gras texture was like pate mousse.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Steamed rice with chicken feet and spareribs:

The rice beneath it was delicious, every grain was flavoured and evenly coated with sauce after it had been steamed.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Steamed chicken feet:

This was interesting because it had CRINKLE CUT CHIPS beneath it.
According to Ding Dim 1968 traditionally chopped potatoes and lotus roots are used, French fries have been an alternative in HK in some restaurants, for below reason:
Chopped potatoes and 蓮藕 are normally used to keep the chicken/pork ribs a-floated (from the oily but tasty sauce) but most of the time they are not eaten and go to waste... French fries, on the contrary, are consumed as observed (similar to poutine!)

Har gau:

The prawn dumpings were nice and springy but a bit salty.

All you can eat dim sum at Zaan

Tried the all you can eat dim sum for $108 which does not include 10% service charge, tea and sauces.
So it rounds up to about $130 per person.

The dim sum creations are quite good but they don't taste as good as they look.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Taro roll stuffed with purple rice:

This was literally a slice of taro with purple glutinous rice in the middle and rolled up.
It was not too sweet but the taro slice was not steamed long enough as it was too hard.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Rice roll with BBQ pork:

It was too oily and the BBQ was not fresh and the colour was too dark.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
pork dumpling with mushroom:

In Chinese, it is supposed to be a shao mai but it just looked weird and tasted like fatty pork.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
honey and yuzu jelly:

too sweet
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Crispy dumpling with sweet and sour sauce:

This was the only decent tasting item.
It was crispy with nicely minced pork and black fungas inside.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
prawn dumpling:

The dumplings were quite oily.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
marinated chicken feet in vinegar and chili:

The chicken feet were too hard and the chili was too spicy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
baked seafood puff, taro croquette stuffed with prune, crispy milk custard with almond:

Too oily and the pastries had the usual HK style buttery taste.

Wanchai's second branch of 金輝點心

This is the second branch of 金輝點心 in WanChai, the other one is located on Spring Garden Lane.

I have never visited that branch before because it is always a battle between cars and pedestrians on that street.

Anyway, this branch is tucked away on Gresson Road by the busy market next to quite a few popular restaurants.

It is a fast paced restaurants with waitors whizzing in and out.

They have dim sum sets.

At the front, there is a counter that keeps all the dim sums hot.

Their hygiene has improved because on the first visit, the fried eggs were slapped in a plastic bag, but on the second visit they were on a metal plate in a plastic bag.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Prawn dumplings:

I did not like them because the skin was too chewy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Steamed rice with spare ribs and chicken feet:

This was really good because the rice beneath it without soy sauce was flavoured.
After the sweet soy sauce was added, it tasted even better.
The chicken feet were nice and soft and the bones detached easily however the spare ribs were fatty and bony.
