Piglet cake and mooncakes from Tsui Hang Village

Thanks to Mira Dining for the lovely Moon Festival treats.

I liked the mooncakes because there was Chinese Ham and Chinese date which I haven’t tried before.

Kee Wah 2015 mooncakes

Kee Wah Bakery is a chain of bakery stores in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United States, founded in Hong Kong in 1938 by Wong Yip Wing (1911–1999), they are well known in Hong Kong and overseas Chinese communities for their traditional Chinese pastries and delicacies.

It is also famous in the UK because stores in Chinatown would import some and people from HK would send them over. However, in the recent years people have been getting fed up with traditional mooncakes due to health reasons and family sizes are as not big as before.

The traditional sized mooncakes would last you for days because they are quite sickly and during the mooncake season, there are so much mooncakes about that when you share it with people, the chances are that they have already had some.

Before the festival, many bakeries start selling mooncakes which attracts people to buy new and specials flavours for themselves, then nearer the festival, people will start buying mooncakes for others.

Anyway, there are so many varieties at Kee Wah, ranging from traditional to modern ones that there is a mooncake for everyone.
This year they have a mix of East and the West with Tea mooncakes such as Earl Grey egg custard mooncake and Jasmine egg custard mooncakes!!

They have also done a joint venture with Ocean Park Conservation Foundation HK where they will donate HKD$5 for every panda themed mooncake set gets sold.

You can also get a cute panda bag for $1 by spending over a certain amount (see in store for details)

Here is part of the collection from Kee Wah that I got my hands on.

My favourite had to be the cute panda tin and the chocolate custard mooncake.

Assorted custard mooncakes:

Mini chocolate custard mooncakes

The chocolate and custard was really nice with a strong chocolate taste and hints of custard.

The custard was good because it was rich but not too sweet.

As well as traditional mooncakes, Kee Wah has also launched these cute panda mooncakes in a tin tower.

Maxim's 2014 colourful mooncakes

Maxim's Cake Shop (Central)
Tried Maxim's colourful mooncakes series which contains 16 flavours:

Mango, mixed berries, blueberry cheese, devils chocolate crunch, sesame with macadamia, mango chestnut, green bean paste with salty egg yolk, pink guava and apricot.

Taro and coconut, green tea with red beans, mango with grapefuit and greenbean, premium green beans, custard, blueberry duo, angel chocolate crunch and mango crunch.

The two that I wanted to try were the Taro and coconut and pink guava and apricot.
In the end I tried the Taro and coconut which was quite nice.

In the middle, there was taro paste.

The taste was quite coconutty and the taro paired nicely with it.
I would have liked it if the texture wasn't starchy but it is by default because they all contain mung beans.

Cuisine Cuisine's 2014 mooncakes

Every year, lots of mooncake tins become trash which is not environmentally friendly.

It is nice to see reusable and creative boxes.

The box can be converted into a mini tea table as well as a useful box for storing things.

As for the mooncakes, they were delicious after they were heated for about 10 seconds in the microwave.

It had a crumbly soft texture with fragrant egg custard taste without being too sweet, and the pastry was lovely and buttery.

As well as egg custard, there is molten pumpkin or bird's nest.

The Banqueting House's mooncakes

The Banqueting House (Tsim Sha Tsui)
Recieved a mooncake coupon for The Banqueting House's custard mooncakes.

The mooncakes were in a paper box which was quite environmentally friendly.

After they were reheated they smelt very buttery and the custard filling was sweet and savory.

As they do not have any preservatives they need to be refrigerated.

I would advise getting them before you go home because they need to be refrigerated.

Mandarin mooncakes 2014

My colleague got some mooncakes from FedEx hence I got to try them!!

Same as last year, they were delivered by another courier company and not FedEx themselves.

They were egg custard mooncakes.

After microwaving them for 20 seconds in the microwave, they were hot and delicious.
There was a fragrant egg custard smell and the pastry was lovely and buttery which went well with the egg custard filling.

My favourite 2014 mooncake

I was thrilled to receive a mooncake gift certificate for Dolci's mooncakes because I tried it before and it was delicious.

I redeemed it quickly because these mooncakes are just divine and it comes with my favourite Jasmine tea.

The box had a modern subtle moon festival theme with clouds, moon and a rabbit.

If you look carefully, you will find a rabbit looking at the moon with its colour matched to the tea packaging.

Normally when I have these mini custard mooncakes, a quarter would be enough because it is usually too sweet and buttery but these are so palatable that I have a whole one in one go and selfishly I did not share these with anyone because they are too good to share.
After microwaving it for 10 seconds, it becomes warm and fragrant, and the custard filling was dreamy unlike other brands!!
